They bottom out lighter than Gateron Blacks.

Best Cherry switch for gaming?
>>
>>52479230
Switches are entirely subjective. There is no "best" switch for anything. Get a switch tester to see which you prefer.
>>
>>52479225
Huh, interesting.

This here suggests otherwise.

No idea what is up with that switch, but that is the only place I have seen one have that insane of a bottom out.

the HHKB is shit

why is this being shilled ?
>>
>>52479393

Buyers remorse.

If you listen to the shills, they keep saying how the HHKB is something most normals can't afford.

In reality the HHKB is a rather cheap board, they are just trying to justify that feeling of wasting what little money they have.
>>
>>52479153
What's the attraction to the HHKB compared to something like a Realforce?
From what I have heard the HHKB lacks things like a metal back plate and the stock kepcaps are meh. Do people buy it purely for the form factor?

The stock keycaps are pretty much the same with the realforce. I may be mistaken on this, but it doesn't feel or sound like I'm ever hitting the plate with the keycaps like I would with my cherry board. I'm quite sure that the switch bottoms out before the keycaps reach the plate.

The plastic plate is actually often seen as a plus since it gives the HHKB the characteristic sound that it's known for.

I'd say it's the form factor and the aesthetics. I was going to get a realforce until I noticed that I could easily do away with the function and arrow keys.

They changed the weight of the spring. The crazy high resistance seems to be only found on the early production versions of the switch. All the ones on massdrop since have been lighter than black as far as I've seen.

Granite is a meme set.
It's literally "Hey this is going to be the last run of granite ever I promise this time :^)" over and over again.
It's not even a particularly impressive set to begin with, people just bandwagon it hard.

Where are some of the best places to buy a blank set of PBT keycaps?
>>
>>52480411
I was talking about the idea
>>
>>52479225
The Gateron Yellow problem was either because there were knockoffs or because the initial production had major defects. Either way, a good portion of people now have yellows with absurd bottom-out resistances. It was so inconsistent that some retailers wouldn't offer them as options, because nobody had the right information about them.

I'm a big fan of Gateron, but even if the initial ones purchased were knockoffs, they should have been able to reign in all the confusion and misinformation and handle the situation. They didn't do either, so now nobody seems to have a good understanding of the gat yellow switches.
>>
>>52480410
I think part of it's popularity stems from the fact that there is all kinds of layouts accommodated for and that there's a whole bunch of add-on packs.

And it's actually good quality PBT too. There's almost no good quality PBT sets in ISO layouts.

It's warped as hell, just like every other SP PBT set.
SP is only good at making ABS SA, since they're shiny to begin with so the fact that they're ABS doesn't matter.

Couldn't agree more. I bought an HHKB Pro 2 and couldn't believe how over-hyped it was. I was lucky to have purchased it on Amazon, but it genuinely felt just like a regular keyboard. It had a bit of a quality feel to it, I guess, but it was no different than any other rubberdome I've used.

If anybody's really itching to try one, buy it from Amazon and know that you have two weeks to return it if you don't like it, that way you're at least getting rid of the cost-justification.

They aren't horrible keyboards, they're just not worth the cost of them, nor are they worth the hype that people give them.

If I could find both an HHKB Pro 2 and a GH60 and they both cost $100, I'd buy the GH60, even though the GH60 costs less to buy in normal circumstances. Though, I guess it would make more sense to buy the Pro 2 and sell it, but I'm speaking as if they both always costed the same amount.

I ordered an HHKB and I think it's perfectly fine. I'm currently on a Ducky Shine 2 so I used a dip switch to swap the ctrl and caps keys around so I can get used to that layout. You can get hasu's controller (I ordered one too) which allows you to fully reprogram the keyboard to your liking.
>>
>>52481842
You actually USE caps lock? Why? It's just as easy to hold down shift unless you're typing paragraphs in all caps, which seems like a pretty minor edge case. I've been remapping it to Ctrl for years because the Ctrl key positions on normal keyboards are awkward pinky-stretching shit.

The backspace position feels better than it does on normal QWERTY does, it's really comfy after getting used to it.

Will there ever be a cross between the Pok3r and HHKB? I am in love with my Pok3r but I also really enjoyed typing on a friend's Novatouch.

I heard recently that the HHKB doesn't have a metal plate in it, unlike the realforce boards, and that some people actually like it more for this reason. I'm not sure how good I am at telling the difference between plate/no plate (or rather knowing it's the reason I prefer one board over another). Does the Novatouch have a plate? Would a 60% Novatouch be like a HHKB?

Found some reddit guide for programming the Pok3r to use a layout like the HHKB when I was searching DuckDuckGo for neat ideas on what to program the Pok3r to do. I did it to my layer 2 or 3. Haven't really made the switch yet, because fucking up muscle memory is always pretty jarring and I can't remember where I changed all the modifiers to. I also hate that there's constantly an LED on if you're not in the main layer.

I'm not mad about it being shilled and I don't own one, but I hate it when people assume someone's amount of money is related to their opinion on something. I still consider myself pretty poor, though.

>>
>>52480410
>It's literally "Hey this is going to be the last run of granite ever I promise this time :^)" over and over again.
I hate Matt3o so much for that crap. On top of that, he splits the keysets into packages where you end up needing to buy at least 3 of them, and then you fall into the "escalation of commitment" trap.

Since you needed to buy an extra package just to get your last 3 remaining keys, you figure you may as well complete that set, otherwise you're just spending way a ton of money on 3 keys. So then you have 4 sets, but you're missing keys to complete another layout, so then you buy another package and have 5, etc. etc.

The other annoying part is that all he did was slightly change the legends. Ordering the text-modifiers option leaves you with a set that looks nearly identical to the one that's already sold by SP [see "DSA Stock Sublimated Keycap Sets"].

He even makes the damn arrow keys all-text, so if you order a text-mod option, you get these funky looking arrow keys that don't have symbols - he should have at least offered the option to change that one small thing.

My final gripe is that everybody buying the ISO 'Enter' key is getting screwed. It's not the same layout as the rest of the set. IIRC, the 'Enter' key is in the DCS profile, while the rest of the set is DSA. Pretty ridiculous of SP to have not invested in that mould by now, and it's not listed in the Massdrop page that they're getting a different 'Enter' key than they're expecting.

The major benefit to his set, though, is that it accommodates so many different layouts. With the "Pro" and "Extreme" mod packs, you can dress virtually any layout, and have a pretty decent looking keyboard.

With the group buy, it also ends up slightly cheaper than the regular SP set. The standard alpha and mod packs come out to 80 bucks from SP, where the same packs from Matt3o come out to 60, so it's not terrible in that regard.

Knowing this, I still spent 150 on 6 packages, could be worse
>>
>>52482821
I can compare it with my MX blue Filco.

Pros:
>Nice one handed multimedia shortcuts
>Removable cable
>More silent than blues
>Actuation point and reset point are about the same

Cons:
>Pings noticeably
>Build quality is not as good as Filco (there's a small gap between the top and bottom halves of the case)
>Still not as tactile as blues (though better than browns)

It made me realize that I took my Filco for granted. But the WASD V2 is still a pretty good board.

I tried 45g Topre switches yesterday, and although they didn't exactly blow my mind away, it was a strangely pleasant typing experience. They felt like what browns should've been: light and tactile. They're still a bit too mushy for me, so I imagine 55g would be clears done right. Hope this helps.

My weird ass purchase.

It's a financial keyboard with an integrated trackpad. It uses two PCBs, one for the trackpad portion and one for the 60% board portion. The PS2 ports are attached to the trackpad PCB and there is some sort of soldered pinout connecting the two PCBs. I it possible to solder a PS2 cable directly to the pinout?

It has MX Blues and feels quite nice to type on, but it doesn't hold a candle to my two alps boards or my model M.

I don't know what you what you Cherry users are smoking. These switches are far nicer than domes, but they are nothing compared to Alps switches and crap compared to buckling springs.

Looks right if you just need some replacement MX Browns, but they won't have any LEDs. You'll have to buy them separately.

FYI, you should give an Alps board a shot. Matias makes some good boards that I think you can find in Fry's. Alps and Alps style switches just sound "right" to me; they have a deep, solid thock and a satisfying click that just sounds more mature than Cherry switches.

I really like my board. It's just that a couple of the buttons feel... off. Everything works though so I might just ignore it since I hardly use the number pad. I can't desolder anything until I replace my soldering iron so I can't tell, but can my current leds be reused? They work fine as is. I'm new to mechanical keyboards and I was under the impression that backlit switches were a different part than non backlit ones.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

>I was under the impression that backlit switches were a different part than non backlit ones.
Nope. The LED leads just go down through the switch to the PCB.

I am looking for a plate like the picture. I'd like to find a full 104 plate if possible. I made a custom single hand board before but I etched a PCB and surface mounted the switches. So they weren't all that straight and nice looking. I want to make a a full keyboard this time so I need perfect alignment.

Anyone know where one can buy these?

So are you saying you want a laser-cut, 100%, steel plate? There are lots of 60% out there, and some TKL GBs come and go. I don't know of any fullsize currently running - they aren't the most popular.

I hear some bitching about the quality of previous Granite runs. Anyone have experience / pictures of how bad it is?

>>
>>52482830

SP does have an ISO DSA enter mold.

Unfortubately the person who payed for tha tmold to include it in their set will not let anyone else use it.

But the thing is that at the amount of sets Granite is going to sell, there is no reason for matt3o NOT to get his own enter made. Spread over so many sets the peice would be miniscule.

Try before you buy

many like reds, because they're light and don't make much noise, but I and many others prefer blues for there good feedback

Go to a store and test some keyboards, or buy a switch tester off of the internet
>>
>>52486415
>>52479230
I personally love blues but people seem to think they're not good for gaming because they "double press" them. I don't know how it's possible to not realize you pressed a key the first time with the sound and feel of blue keys.
>>
>>52486513
I think they mean that it's harder to double tap due to the slightly higher reset point. I game on blues too, though I'm currently deciding whether to use blues or clears for my main keyboard.

>>
>>52487511
>Fine, capacitive switch
That is not the distinction. The distinction between "mechanical keyboards" and "regular keyboards" is that "regular keyboards" use rubber dome switches. Topre keyboards also use rubber dome switches which are just spring loaded and fancier.
>>
>>52487242
I found this one but it's never in stock. So hard to find minimalist keyboards with red switches that aren't riced to shit.

http://www.amazon.com/Choc-Mechanical-Keyboard-Gateron-Switches/dp/B014FGL4QI
>>
>>52487615
Except it doesn't use the rubber dome to complete the circuit, it has a rubber dome in it yes, but the rubber dome literally isn't even doing anything similar to what it does it a regular rubber domey keyboard.

>>
>>52491301
Depending on your definition of cheap, sure. It'd cost about the same as buying it from Massdrop, and you'd be best making the entire thing out of acrylic to reduce costs. Since a 1.5mm sheet of acrylic isn't going to hold well as a plate, you'd need something like 3..4mm at least, making it a bit thicker, you also wouldn't be able to turn it upside down without the switches falling out.

You could solve that problem by friction-fitting the switches, but that would require ordering multiple boards from your CNC of choice, or at least multiple samples, which would increase your costs.

Ordering a custom PCB would cost too much for something like that, so hand-wiring is your best option, but then you're increasing the thickness a bit more in order to stay on the safe side.

All-in-all, you're probably better off ordering it for 200 bucks. Personally, I'd spend the extra 50 bucks for the keycaps as well. Already spent way too much over this last month though.

Also, they had the most frustrating problems during the last infinity-ergo drop, so I'm going to keep avoiding the drop until they seem to have their shit together.

Ah, yeah I get what you're saying. A few months ago I actually made a shitty numpad out of cardstock and folded business-cards at work. Everybody was screwing around with some neat precision cutting equipment we'd just received, so it seemed like a good idea.

Regarding the Infinity-Ergo, If they were to iron out all the major problems they've had with the thing, I'd be willing to buy it.

Interconnectivity via USB wasn't a smart move unless they separated the USB connector from the PCB. Everybody with the Ergo-Infinity has been having problems because of the USB3.0 size, minor twists and turns will damage the connection to the PCB.

They also somehow managed to screw up their tolerances and put too much pressure on the LCD, making it change colours when it wasn't supposed to.

Until they've shown that they can have a successful group buy without obvious design flaws, though, I won't be getting involved.

anyone on /mkg/ with a WASD keyboard?
considering getting one with Blue Switches and PT layout, since it's a non-existent combo in Portugal
do you recommend them?
post pics of it

Dude we are the same people every thread

If you ask us the same questions you will get the same answers how difficult is it to understand that
>>
>>52494877
their keyboards are fine
don't buy their keycaps it's ABS shit
get their bare keyboard and buy keycaps somewhere else
>>
>>52494908
I wonder how many different people come here lol
>>
>>52494877
Their keycaps are shit. Get it barebones and a nice set of PBT blanks.

or just learn to ANSI, you wont loose anything

I'd venture 15 regular posters, 20ish lurkers and 6-7 casuals each thread.

Last 3 threads were 70% me samefagging against myself.

I considered getting into mechanical keyboards but it just seems like a gigantic time and moneysink considering I actually like the feel of scissor switches over full-size keyboards.

Or I could just do what I did with watches and buy the first one I saw and never think about it again.

any other options instead of this?

That's really not true, though. That's just how many different kits have been purchased. If 4,000 people bought multiple kits, Spinelli would probably disappear from the forums for a while.
That dude's so damn greedy it's nuts. I was just checking out the Gateron caps by EnjoyPBT, and Spinelli comments on how the whtie kit with a blue esc and blue arrows was "ripping off" the white-fox keycaps. He'd probably sue if he could.

The guy is still a hack though, none of his designs are really noteworthy and his circlejerking on GH is unwarranted. Just the alignment of the Whitefox legends makes me cringe.

my computer already gets funky with bluetooth sometimes, and a 12 hour battery doesn't really seem worth it.

I mean, even if I'd use it for traveling I could just get one of those extendable cables. I'm mainly interested in controlling my mouse through my keyboard. Imagine how comfy that'd be.

Got myself a Corsair K70 w/ Cherry MX Brown switches for xmas. It's my first mechanical keyboard.

I'm never going back.

What's a good portable one? Preferably w/ Brown switches so I don't piss too many people off.

I have a predicament. On my local craigslist there is an ad for 6 non working model m keyboards for 75 dollars. I feel like I can get at least two of these running. Should I pull the trigger and buy them?
>>
>>52496350
Of course you should, fixing stuff is good.
>>
>>52496257
You're right, it doesn't even succeed at being a media consumption device. It's an abortion that can't do even that properly let alone be able to do actual work.
>using shit hardware with a midget screen for any actual work, especially in a home/office setting where space and portability is not a concern

I literally threw up everywhere
I know you're poor and try to hide it by buying a meme keyboard but you should at least try next time.

That's been the standard for some time now, though. I'd understand if he was pissed because they were using some logo or trademarked key, or maybe even if they used the same layout as the WhiteFox (barely reasonable, but still reasonable), but to get upset that two of the key clusters that most frequently have changes in colour are blue, and the legends are centered - it's just nuts. It's hard to find a set of keys that aren't centered nowadays, and the meta symbols used more frequently than ever.

The dude's a nutjob, he's kind and he's a joy to talk to on the forums, but a clear nutjob. He should find a better way to profit off of this, he's clearly talented, but he has no idea how IP works.

I genuinely think he's gong to start targeting two-tone keysets that look "too similar" to his Granite set. I'm willing to bet he'd even find a way to get PMK to stop selling the DSA Stock sub in the granite colour palette.
>>
>>52496404
12.50 for a cum crusted keyboard isn't that much. Especially if the parts alone could go for double or triple.
