i watched the SICP videos from 1987, a course taught at MIT, there were plenty of women and minorities in that course, it was honestly 50/50.

You could learn WinAPI/MFC, pretty sure they're all written in C. Alternatively, upgrade to C++ and pick up C++ GUI Programming with Qt4. 90% of the information still applies, and it's not a bad book.
