my pc is upstairs meanwhile the router is downstairs, and no matter how powerful the dongle is i will always get random disconnects, heavy packet loss, and lower speeds

i just had to suck it up, buy myself a 100ft ethernet cord and just go ham

It will work as well as your wifi situation allows. I'm giving you grief because without knowing things like the number of walls between your WAP and your desktop, how far they are apart, etc. we can't really tell you. Directional antennas will always be better than a dongle though, but like I said, without knowing your situation it is impossible to know if you would benefit from one or not.

If I wasn't a retard though, I would have assured myself that my PCIe wifi card was actually going to fit in my motherboard prior to purchasing it. My PCIe card that I used in my old computer is way more reliable than the usb adapter that I have now (it cuts out for a few seconds after a 1-2 hours).

The antenna in that is going to be obscenely small and shitty. If you need wireless, a USB dongle can work, but don't get the cheapest one you can find.

Especially a USB 3 dongle with a small antenna will work like shit, USB generates way too much noise.

Obviously they also work for desktops, but if you want better reception, get a router, reflash it with openWRT and make it act like a wifi client.

anon, I ran out of cable options for our router, used one of those that I bought years ago as it wasn't compatible with our router of the time and expected it to be awful.

MFW I've torrented many many terrabytes and watched tons of streaming video without any issue. It all turned out better than expected.

USB wifi adaptors are shit, and they are always limited to the speeds of USB.

PCI-E is the only way to get decent speeds on wifi for Desktops.

buy a cheap $20 router that has support for openWRT. Set it up se repeater and connect your desktop to it via enthernet cable. Connect that router to main router wireless to create bridge.
