I have this cpu, I bought a s2600cp4 on ebay for £75 new. Good stuff. One thing to consider when buying a server motherboard, if it is SSI EEB (which the s2600cp4 is) case costs can go high, I bought an enthroo pro full tower for £80 and it covered a lot of the cable management features and I had to remove all the drive cages and optical drive bays, phanteks design regarding the drive cages and optical drives is stupid, unless I got it wrong you have to use the should to properly secure them. Once removed I could get the board in and then I put them back afterwards, price you pay I suppose, just be wary it's a good couple hours of building rather than the usual 30mins.

Other than that bring on the deals! Looking the get another 2670 for dual cpu sexy time.

Using a pure dark rock or whatever, the £25 one, seems to do the job ok.

My powerhouse of a home server. I used to run a Minecraft server, but I recently shut it down so I had a bunch of spare parts to create this beast.

It runs WS2012 and virtualizes Ubuntu Server. WS2012 runs my Plex Server and the Ubuntu part runs a small-time FTB server for me and a friend, a Terraria server for other friends, Teamspeak for all my friends, and my mail server. Within the WS2012 install there's also Couchpotato, Sonarr, and Headphones for the Plex Server. Everything is torrented on a seedbox and I just use scp to get it.

I have a GTX 670 in it, and Steam installed on a sub account so I can in-home stream (and even when I'm at school), vidya to my rMBP. It's great for things like Rocket League, Dota 2, and MGSV.

I wouldn't play a game of Dota over WAN, since the latency is a bit too much for near split-second decision making, but I have a 150/150 mb/s connection, and a gigabit connection at my school. I think latency is about ~27ms, which isn't bad at all, especially for games like Rocket League, MGS, or Civ 5.

I have a 13 inch rMBP from early 2014. I love it, but Iris is seriously underpowered for most things; the machine chokes scrolling through large PDFs. So the ability to play games on Ultra is pretty funny.

btw: I use OpenVPN to stream.

I know a screenshot doesn't really show off how well it works (since I converted it to JPG and removed my username), but trust me, it works really well. There is a bit of compression artifacts when there's a lot of movement or things going on, but overall it's a seriously nice treat. Especially since this is nothing more than watching a movie, my laptop's battery lasts pretty long playing games.

I had a fully stocked 48u rack of old dell servers which I spent about a grand on. Gave it away since could not be fucked to move it, would never be sold and simply used to much electricity. well for a mail server you may not be able to run it from home in the first place, most residential ISPs block outbound traffic on ports used by mail protocols. I'm about to invest a sizable chunk of money in my first "real" server (I'll be using it as a fileserver almost exclusively). I've got a handful of devices that I use as servers (pic related, plus 2 QNAP's).

So, here's the question: Pre-Built (Dell, IBM, HP etc.) White-Box (Thinkmate) or build it myself? Any recommendations in particular?

Well you have to install Transmission or some other client first, but basically yes.

I use mine (see >>52351668 ) as a seed box. It took about an hour to setup, although I don't use an HDD with it.

I am getting pretty close to a point where my homeserver is right where I want it.

Just got Plex and qbittorent-nox setup and working correctly.

I just recently figured out that NFS is not, in fact, using all my memory and cache when I transfer large amounts of data to the server. For some reason Cockpit reports that the system is using 14GB of RAM and cache, while htop reports less than 1GB out of 8GB. Seems to be a known problem.

I do. It's not too bad. Takes some time getting used to it over ESXi and vSphere, but it definitely does what it does well. And it's free. And runs Debian.

Just throw it on some decent hardware and go for it. You're not losing any money.

I have a gen8 and its quiet as fuck. I've been transcoding for 3 days straight and fan is at 35% which isn't loud, especially considering I have a e3 1240v2 in there with that tiny heatsink.

Oddly enough the HP microserver gen8 has a proprietary fan connector and it won't POST without it which rules out 3rd party fans.

So i tried activating windows server 12 r2 with kmspico but somehow it fucked up the admin password or something afterwards, anyways when i try to login now it just says that the password is incorrect every time even though it's correct

I then tried this workaround where you boot from the installation DVD, open up a command prompt and rename the Utilman exe thingy in system32 to reset the password, however when i tried to do this it said that there was a syntax error. Also there was no utilman.exe anymore in system32 in the first place at that point.

I also created two or three new user accounts with new passwords via cmd but then it said that although the user accounts themselves were created they could not be added to the local "User" group afterwards

What i then tried to do was to change the admin password in cmd via the dsmod command but this didn't work either because it said that the "File could not be found", whatever the hell that means

Note that when i try to create a password reset floppy disc it just claims that it's not a valid floppy storage device, which is also a blatant lie

Wat do? Do i have to reinstall the entire fucking thing now?

I use a tiny Dell desktop that was given to me for free. I keep my movies and shit on it. Pictures automatically backup to it from my phone's camera roll. I run Murmur because Skype is shit. I'm an amateur, really. What else should I do with this thing?

Slowpoke here. I can't believe the E3-1231 has hyperthreading.

How does the Memetium fare with multiple plex streams? I was thinking of getting the mentioned Xeon, since I might regret it later and it's already expensive as it is. It'll serve as a NAS with ZFS and RAIDz2, maybe handle the torrents, maybe as an e-mail server, plex but I'd need a graphics card for a good mpv config, owncloud, etc. I've been using Debian on the laptop for about 6 months now, but I feel I'm still too new at it and think I'll fuck up quickly. Which OS should I go with?

I have a computer with two 160GB drives that I never use, it's got Arch installed on it. What can I do with it?

It's been really picky about operating systems. Couldn't find a flavor of ubuntu it liked, found it liked CentOS, but any kernel update broke it, and so far it likes all windows stuff so far.

The only way to do what you are asking is to have vpn access to your home network from the internet, that could be hard to set up.

that's an "old" dell PowerEdge 1950 with 16gb ram and 2x250gb hdd(raid 1) mounted on a wall, running cloudstack and some VMs on that(1 for irc bot and bouncer, 1 for game servers and 1 for windows server testing)

Looking to build a low power fileserver/transmission-daemon box, preferably mini-ITX. Something that is quiet, uses less than 30w idle, and maybe host a plex server as well, though plex is of low priority.
I am very interested in FreeNAS for simplicity, and am totally open to SoC systems.

Any of you already using something like that or have some advice on board selection?

No specs to generally write home about, 4U up top has 32 gigs of ram. Network switches are on the rack to the left of this one, currently in the process of setting up new (to me) DAS unit.

Wiring is much cleaner than it used to be.

Email, as in hosting an Email Server? I'm assuming you are implying you will be using an IRC client, and frankly, The power I've devoted to my dedicated torrent box (~250 active torrents constantly) is way overkill.

If you're interested in a Xeon Processor, an L Line processor in the 5000 sequence would meet or exceed your needs. All of these processors will support ECC or better. If your hardware permits for this processor, it is a good choice.

To be in control of your own mail, which is no one else's business but yours anyway. And the easy blacklisting issue almost never happens. Except for some gTLDs cases like .ninja. which are commonly being abused for unsolicited email and therefore consistently blocked by some MTAs.

So choose a good DNS domain and you'll be all right. Don't be an open relay, and setup some anti spam / forgery measurements (SPF, DKIM and DMARC are a good solution).

I've taken an old HP desktop from work, and an even older IBM desktop that my dad found, and I plan on making them into small, simple homeservers.

It's a ZyXEL GS1920-24 switch with two routers (Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite and X SFP) in router-on-a-stick setup with VRRP on the inside.
It is connected to 5 other sites over GRE/IPsec with OSPF routing, and I peer with the dn42 VPN (BGP and OpenVPN).
The core switch is connected to another managed switch (Cisco SG200-08, no SNMP unfortunately) near the TV, for powering a HTPC, an IPTV set-top box and a smart TV.

It's a SansDigital TR4U USB3 case. It was teribad. I had to remove the USB3 bridge and run it as eSATA. Performance is about what you'd expect from a PCI-E 1x card and a SATA 6. But it's all media storage, and I'll saturate the 1 gig interface before I will the SATA bus.

ECC RAM - The cost difference between ECC and regular DDR3 is usually minimal.

RAID - Redundancy in drives. If you use something like ZFS, LVM, or Storage Spaces, this is not really needed.

ZFS (or LVM, or Storage Spaces) - The idea is to be able to pool a bunch of drives, and let the software decide how to use them. In the Supermicro chassis I use a combination of onboard SATA ports and Dell H310 adapters flashed to IT mode as general "dumb adapters", and, in the Intel chassis I just use the individual disks in JBOD/RAID0 mode. All 6 are part of a ScaleIO shared storage cluster, no RAID, ZFS, etc.

Networking backbone is pretty basic, it's a Cisco 3560E for general connectivity, management, internet, etc., with a Mellanox IS5030 switch providing the storage area network backbone for ScaleIO.

All running Server 2012 R2 ;)

For anyone wondering what the difference is between forward and reverse breakouts, it's the wiring. You need forward breakouts if your host is SAS and target is SATA, reverse breakouts if your host is SATA and target is SAS. 8087 to 8087 is it's SAS to SAS. And ordinary SATA cables if it's SATA to SATA.

So if you're using a RAID or HBA card connected to a caddy with SATA ports, you want a forward breakout. Whereas if you're using a caddy or chassis with SAS ports and want to plug them into the motherboards SATA ports, you want a reverse breakout cable. If both your RAID or HBA card and your caddy or chassis is SAS, then you want 8087 to 8087 (SAS to SAS). And just a regular old SATA cable if you're connecting your motherboards SATA ports to a caddy or chassis with a regular old SATA port.
