Any recommendations for a server motherboard (reasonable price hopefully)?

I have this cpu, I bought a s2600cp4 on ebay for £75 new. Good stuff. One thing to consider when buying a server motherboard, if it is SSI EEB (which the s2600cp4 is) case costs can go high, I bought an enthroo pro full tower for £80 and it covered a lot of the cable management features and I had to remove all the drive cages and optical drive bays, phanteks design regarding the drive cages and optical drives is stupid, unless I got it wrong you have to use the should to properly secure them. Once removed I could get the board in and then I put them back afterwards, price you pay I suppose, just be wary it's a good couple hours of building rather than the usual 30mins.

Other than that bring on the deals! Looking the get another 2670 for dual cpu sexy time.

Using a pure dark rock or whatever, the £25 one, seems to do the job ok.

Hope this helps a bit.

My powerhouse of a home server. I used to run a Minecraft server, but I recently shut it down so I had a bunch of spare parts to create this beast.

It runs WS2012 and virtualizes Ubuntu Server. WS2012 runs my Plex Server and the Ubuntu part runs a small-time FTB server for me and a friend, a Terraria server for other friends, Teamspeak for all my friends, and my mail server. Within the WS2012 install there's also Couchpotato, Sonarr, and Headphones for the Plex Server. Everything is torrented on a seedbox and I just use scp to get it.

I have a GTX 670 in it, and Steam installed on a sub account so I can in-home stream (and even when I'm at school), vidya to my rMBP. It's great for things like Rocket League, Dota 2, and MGSV.

why are 4TB HDDs still so expensive? fuck, i need more storage.

My home server:

KVM server - Centos 7
Intel® Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v3
64bg ecc Rdimm
2TB nvme
GTX 960 - pcipassthrough to windwows/steam kvm
10gb Mellanox connectx2 fiber nic.

She does... KVM hosting for test builds(currently a Hadoop cluster and aWarewulf cluster both manaaged by Puppet)
File storage, steam game host for nix boxes in the house. leg server. rsync server for auto backup. pxe server. ... Cant think of what else, sure there is more.

no only 4TB but HDDs are still expensive

>>
Has anybody ordered anything from bargainhardware? (www.bargainhardware.co.uk). I am thinking about ordering the HP Z600 with dual xeons.
>>
>>52347592
HDDs are Expensive, especially when considering the fact some have to run 10,000 RPMs to keep the server efficient, and SSD's are more expensive than many others due to the new technology. If you ask me, blend between the two.
>>
>>52347782
the most expensive are SAS like 15k RPM

Better than NVME costs. my 2tb was a few grand.

Do you stream over internet to your macbook? How is the latency and everything?
>>
>>52347957
I wouldn't play a game of Dota over WAN, since the latency is a bit too much for near split-second decision making, but I have a 150/150 mb/s connection, and a gigabit connection at my school. I think latency is about ~27ms, which isn't bad at all, especially for games like Rocket League, MGS, or Civ 5.

I have a 13 inch rMBP from early 2014. I love it, but Iris is seriously underpowered for most things; the machine chokes scrolling through large PDFs. So the ability to play games on Ultra is pretty funny.

btw: I use OpenVPN to stream.

I know a screenshot doesn't really show off how well it works (since I converted it to JPG and removed my username), but trust me, it works really well. There is a bit of compression artifacts when there's a lot of movement or things going on, but overall it's a seriously nice treat. Especially since this is nothing more than watching a movie, my laptop's battery lasts pretty long playing games.

well define getting your shit shoved in
the big risk is that hosting providers, ISPs, and the like are very strict with spammers, so if you slip up and someone manages to use your box to send spam, you'll either get your accounts terminated, or nobody will ever accept mail from you, so the server will be useless.

I meant more identity theft. Or wouldn't you advise running a personal server from home?
>>
>>52349859
well for a mail server you may not be able to run it from home in the first place, most residential ISPs block outbound traffic on ports used by mail protocols. But no, I can't imagine there'd be much risk of identity theft or anything. Just be careful and read some guides on securing your shit, and the worst that'll happen is it not working.

if you have an ATX midtower case already, you might as well just put an ATX board in it, in my book, ITX won't even save you any space. You'll probably get some more SATA ports in the bargain.

I'm about to invest a sizable chunk of money in my first "real" server (I'll be using it as a fileserver almost exclusively). I've got a handful of devices that I use as servers (pic related, plus 2 QNAP's).

So, here's the question: Pre-Built (Dell, IBM, HP etc.) White-Box (Thinkmate) or build it myself? Any recommendations in particular?

I am getting pretty close to a point where my homeserver is right where I want it.

Just got Plex and qbittorent-nox setup and working correctly.

I just recently figured out that NFS is not, in fact, using all my memory and cache when I transfer large amounts of data to the server. For some reason Cockpit reports that the system is using 14GB of RAM and cache, while htop reports less than 1GB out of 8GB. Seems to be a known problem.
>>
>>52348232
I used Digital Ocean for a while, but their prices weren't the best. $10 for dual core, 1GB of RAM and 30GB SSD? Eh, almost not worth it.

Turns out, a local data center was having a black friday sale. 80% off colocation. Ended up getting one of my servers with two quad core xeons, 32GB of RAM and 1.5TB of SAS drives in there for about $45/mo, with 5 IPs. After I rent out the other 4 IPs to people for VMs, I'll be making a profit. Bye bye Digital Ocean. You served me well for a year.

So i tried activating windows server 12 r2 with kmspico but somehow it fucked up the admin password or something afterwards, anyways when i try to login now it just says that the password is incorrect every time even though it's correct

I then tried this workaround where you boot from the installation DVD, open up a command prompt and rename the Utilman exe thingy in system32 to reset the password, however when i tried to do this it said that there was a syntax error. Also there was no utilman.exe anymore in system32 in the first place at that point.

I also created two or three new user accounts with new passwords via cmd but then it said that although the user accounts themselves were created they could not be added to the local "User" group afterwards

What i then tried to do was to change the admin password in cmd via the dsmod command but this didn't work either because it said that the "File could not be found", whatever the hell that means

Note that when i try to create a password reset floppy disc it just claims that it's not a valid floppy storage device, which is also a blatant lie

Wat do? Do i have to reinstall the entire fucking thing now?

Slowpoke here. I can't believe the E3-1231 has hyperthreading.

How does the Memetium fare with multiple plex streams? I was thinking of getting the mentioned Xeon, since I might regret it later and it's already expensive as it is. It'll serve as a NAS with ZFS and RAIDz2, maybe handle the torrents, maybe as an e-mail server, plex but I'd need a graphics card for a good mpv config, owncloud, etc. I've been using Debian on the laptop for about 6 months now, but I feel I'm still too new at it and think I'll fuck up quickly. >>
>>52355929
never buy more than 2 hard drives from the same place, you should be spacing out the purchases between different companies.

if the ram isnt ecc, dont bother with a xeon in the first place

Are you saying you need a good graphics card for plex? I use a 4970 in a dell optiplex I got 4free and it works pretty well except my fuckshit internet
>>
>>52355975
Plex transcoding is CPU bound. GPU makes zero difference (right now, anyway)
>>
>>52355970
It's ECC and yeah, I've heard about purchasing at different times since it's likely that one of drives will be fucked up.

>>52355975

>>
>>52355929
if you're gonna buy a xeon, use a server board and ECC RAM.
server boards come with nice features like IPMI and KVM over IP - very useful for headless servers.

It is a server board.
Here's a link to the parts: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/yVv6kL
>>
>>52356021
its not about one drive being fucked up, its about getting all of the drives from the same batch, which means if one goes bad the likelihood that others will drop at the same time is much higher.

you bite the bullet and pay the difference to buy a couple from amazon, newegg, b&h, etc

and you ALWAYS run a full sector disk check from the bootable WD utility before you actually put the drive in to use

How can I keep the website being acessable from a domain and refuse any connection coming from a direct IP ? I know its basically the same thing but I hope there is a way to differentiate between these types of connections ,preferably before it even hits the server. Deal with it at the router or so

Email, as in hosting an Email Server? I'm assuming you are implying you will be using an IRC client, and frankly, The power I've devoted to my dedicated torrent box (~250 active torrents constantly) is way overkill.

If you're interested in a Xeon Processor, an L Line processor in the 5000 sequence would meet or exceed your needs. All of these processors will support ECC or better. If your hardware permits for this processor, it is a good choice.

To be in control of your own mail, which is no one else's business but yours anyway. And the easy blacklisting issue almost never happens. Except for some gTLDs cases like .ninja. which are commonly being abused for unsolicited email and therefore consistently blocked by some MTAs.

So choose a good DNS domain and you'll be all right. Don't be an open relay, and setup some anti spam / forgery measurements (SPF, DKIM and DMARC are a good solution).

I don't need it, but it's nice to have, especially since the provider gives 3 routable, static IP addresses.

>>
>>52366042
You can buy a pre-built NAS, or if you want something to play around with, an HP Microserver is a good staring point.

ECC RAM - The cost difference between ECC and regular DDR3 is usually minimal.

RAID - Redundancy in drives. If you use something like ZFS, LVM, or Storage Spaces, this is not really needed.

ZFS (or LVM, or Storage Spaces) - The idea is to be able to pool a bunch of drives, and let the software decide how to use them. Whereas RAID usually requires the same size drives (and usually same make and model) these other technologies create a pool, and allow you to slice off parts to create volumes, and configure redundancy for the individual volume.

Pics or it didn't happen, on the dl980
I've never seen one of those in the flesh. How would you rate it? Specs?
>>
>>52368272
Unless you want to lose your shit some day you need backups. I have 20tb of raw storage and 10tb after backups. I don't buy just one hard drive anymore.

That is absolutely hilarious

You sure 1.5kVA is enough for all that?

LGA1567 m8
>>
>>52368272
yes its a home server and it is indeed for simple storage and backups.

>>52369498
yep, will be enough to get it to shut down safely.
all the hardware is current gen so its all very power efficient.
>>
>>52369797
Mmm suppose so, fair enough. I'm just used to working with bigger margins for UPS installs
>>

Is 4 CPUs as good as it gets?

>>52369957
well, I bought 2x 1.5 so if one isnt enough i can always double.

This is my build for a server:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/7XmrdC

I currently have everything in front of me. Once I finish building it, what do I do? It's for Plex, torrenting, backup, file storage. I need an OS, and since I don't want to drop dosh I'm guessing I should use Debian or something. But I've never used anything but Windows (gaymen stuff).
>>
>>52372009
Bruh, you spent all that money and didnt even have a plan before you bought it?
>>
>>52372009
Eh if you are going that route why don't you just buy a TS-140?
>>
>>52372592
I got a lot of stuff on sale / discounted, and the HDD and CPU were holiday gifts. My plan was "ask /g/" which was my plan when I built my main PC and that worked pretty well.

I'll admit it's a shit plan, but it's batting 1000 right now.
>>
>>52372009
>>52372618
Oh I should read the full post before posting.
>>
>>52372620
For something small I was using openmediavault.
>>
>>52372620
I'm glad you have so much faith in /g/

You're next step after building it is to destroy it with a hammer and throw it out your window.

/g/ has spoken.
>>
>>52366454
I went with pic related. They are cheap too.

To be honest you will miss that extra HDD space that a normal case offers.
>>
>>52372744
Well that seems a little counter-intuitive, but if /g/ has spoken that should I use my ballpeen or my sledge?

But seriously, I know it's kind of silly to do this. I'm on other sites as well, but I find /g/ to be trustworthy and helpful.
>>
>>52372864
Sledge, no exceptions faggot.

If you're not wanting to spend money why not Mint. I know everyone is all about >muh debian but if you're not familiar with linux I think that Mint would be your best bet for an OS.
>>
>>52372864
For server, stability is usually most important, so CentOS, RHEL, or Fedora would probably be the best options. But really, anything will do, just stick to it.

Is it better to keep a pfsense box separate from the fileserver/backup or can I have everthing together?
I'll be using consumer-grade things
>>
>maybe off topic
I was a fiend in middle school for HL and its mods. There's one thing I never understood; the servers. What exactly are they? Literally a desktop box with a cruisin ISP? Can someone explain?
>>
>>52365131
this
>>
>>52373302
For security, you shouldn't be running pfsense in a jail.
>>
>>52373607
Surely you mean "should", or do you mean that it should be on free standing hardware?
>>
>>52373607
i'm sorry but what do you mean with "in a jail"? Should i run it on a dedicated box?
>>
>>52373748
>>52373751
oh, you meant a virtualized environment?
>>
>>52372922
>>52372979
>>52372665
So I just finished physically building it. I'm looking into all of the OSs to see which one I think I'll be most comfortable with. Just to be clear, I know that all of these can run Plex and can do backup, but can I use these OSs to perform Dropbox like functions? That is to say, uploading/downloading from the server?

Sorry that these questions probably belong in the /sqt/, I just figured a more specific thread would be fitting.
>>
>>52374017
Also, only just remembering this, will I be able to use one of those OSs and be able to access it via remote desktop on a Windows machine?
>>
>>52374017
>building a server before you decide on OS

wat
>>
>>52374057
We've already been over this, I'm a moron.
>>
Is there a paste bin for home servers or something. I plan on using some old dell pcs to make my own.
>>
>>52374017
Yes, those will both work for that type of functionality.

Anyone have any recommendations for SAS breakout cables? Building a freeNAS server, and I can only seem to find SAS to SATA breakout cables. Or any small / medium form factor cases with Drive cages/ backplanes would also be helpful, as well as a board with IPMI support with a low power proc.
Thanks senpai
>>
>>52374500

8087 to 8087 is SAS mini to SAS mini

Forward breakout is 8087 to 4xSATA.
Reverse breakout is 4xSATA to 8087.

My forward breakouts are 3ware I bought from Xcase.co.uk when I bought my HBA card.

>Desktops are servers

is this neo-/g/?
>>
2 years ago I had no home server at all.

Then I built one, and now whenever it's down (it was down a few times due to various external problems) I feel extremely uncomfortable, like a man who's lost his castle.

I don't even care if my main desktop dies, but the server must live.

Pic related. Motherboard is a Supermicro.

Wrong image file, I am a retard.
>>
>>52374599
How much storage are we talking?
>>
>>52374555

For anyone wondering what the difference is between forward and reverse breakouts, it's the wiring. You need forward breakouts if your host is SAS and target is SATA, reverse breakouts if your host is SATA and target is SAS. 8087 to 8087 is it's SAS to SAS. And ordinary SATA cables if it's SATA to SATA.

So if you're using a RAID or HBA card connected to a caddy with SATA ports, you want a forward breakout. Whereas if you're using a caddy or chassis with SAS ports and want to plug them into the motherboards SATA ports, you want a reverse breakout cable. If both your RAID or HBA card and your caddy or chassis is SAS, then you want 8087 to 8087 (SAS to SAS). And just a regular old SATA cable if you're connecting your motherboards SATA ports to a caddy or chassis with a regular old SATA port.

Any small servers that look as good as HP's ProLiant micro gen8?
>>
>>52374797
Nothing off the shelf. Only self built in a nice mini itx chassis.
>>
>>52374797
fractal design node series? I know they're bigger but I'm itching to do a build with the 804.
