ddg uses cookies to store preferences. They also show what every character of data in the string represents on their website And the option to save preferences as a custom bookmark (like 4chan does ). Or store yor prefs in the "cloud" There's a .js free and cookie free version of the homepage too.

I prefer Startpage. I like their ixquick-proxy feature, but their site loads so slowly for me.
Duckduckgo has poorer results but loads quickly and easily and if I'm searching for something easy or simple I will just use DDG because I know I will get results faster. Startpage is sluggish on my connection.
