That's the joke. To "program" you just need to sit down and fuck with programming. That book is a giant time sink for non-austists who haven't done much program. It's basically "install gentoo" in book form.

The way I learned is to simply just do it. Pick a language, and find something you want to make. A good first project is to make a calculator. Keep searching up what you need to know, copy the code, and then try to play with it.
