Why using SSD's?
You spent 200 bucks for a ludicrous amount of storage just because its a few seconds faster?
I understand that its useful when you need reliable and shockproof storage, but I don't understand why someone would use that in a desktop PC when you can get more than 4TB for the same price.
Did I miss something, /g/?
>>
>>51595723
I got a 500gb SSD for 130 on amazon

it makes everything on it run way faster, say good by to loading times on virtually every game
>>
>>51595763
Also I don't need 4tb of space, I already have a 1tb drive thats more than enough
>>
Is this bait?
>>
>>51595723

>few seconds

it's actually quite significant

sour grapes much?
>>
>>51595782
well i use my pc for many thing and I need at least 2TB.
>>
>>51595874
then thats just you then
>>
>>51595723
Is this serious?
In any case, you don't need a massive amount of space. Just enough for the OS and essential programs that would benefit greatly from the SSD. And $200 is a very outdated number. You can get 250GB for like $80 and then, if you were smart, you'd get an HDD for everything else.
>>
>>51595867
how much is the difference?
I remember that starting a game is ~30s faster on my PS3.
>>
>>51595840
yes
>>
lets say your pc boots 10 seconds faster than a regular hard drive

thats 3650 seconds in a year, and a full hour of not slow hard drive experience.
>>
>>51595723
Why get a car with more horsepower? You'll only save a few seconds or fractions of a second in your 0-60 times. Go buy a 1.0L diesel and save so many money's.

>another thread of a poorfag crying because he can't afford an SSD

save up that allowance money mom gives you and maybe you'll be able to upgrade one day :^)
>>
>>51595723
Because I appreciate the convenience of having slightly faster loading speeds, and I'm not a data hoarder so I don't need storage space.
>>
>>51595723
>pc boots in 15seconds instead of 1 and a half minutes
>pc doesn't ludicrously lag after boot
>everything opens faster

When will this "ssds are a meme" meme die?
>>
>>51595928
On my PC, everything is instant. Programs start up instantly. Games load faster. They're silent. My boot time went from roughly a minute(minus waiting for the desktop to be usable) to being able to be on the desktop and opening programs in under 10 seconds from the moment I touched the power button.
>>
>>51596509
I don't care about boot times, but the lag after boot is fucking horrible.

Absolutely. 4 months ago I got a 120GB for $80 USD and it makes me pretty mad that a month after I bought mine they dropped to $40~$50 for most of them.

Meh, I have a Kingston and they get a lottttt of shit, but this tells me that it's not that bad. Though, Sandisks have an abnormal amount of bad reviews, but I know a lot of people personally who have them and they don't really have any complaints. It may not be as reliable as say a Samsung 850 or something, but then, my Kingston was said not to be, either.

Because, you know, work. Some people do that with their computers. Like me. I'm a video editor and for editing 4K videos, the SSD raid array I've got running helps a fucking lot.
>>
I have an SSD mainly so I can feel cool when I post my computer specs on /g/, post in speccy threads, so my hardware sig looks good on hardware forums, so that I feel like I am current, so that my chinese cartoons and pony cartoons load faster, and because it only took one of my taco bell paychecks to afford it.

the only reason my 80GB drive was not enough was because I had wasted 16GB for a windows install that I never used.

I frequently switch between OSes and already have a 1tb and 2tb drive to store my files. When my main boot drive started crapping out there was no reason to buy anything but an SSD. Picked up a 250gb evo when it went on sale.

Boot times are 2-3 seconds after bootloader, compiling programs and playing WoW has never been faster, no lag between logging into windows and actually being able to open programs.

Is having a 250GB or bigger SSD even necessary? You just need to put system files on it and maybe one or two vidyagayms that you're currently playing that you'll swap out later. A 120GB one should be enough for that.

I'm legit curious, what do you need a bigger SSD for?
>>
Raid 0 babby's will never understand the true power of the SSD master race
>>
I have a 120gb SSD for OS and Adobe suit. Scratch disk is on a 1Tb drive though. Faster bootup times and faster load times. From the time I press the power button to desktop screen it takes 15 seconds. Adobe suite starts up instantly within 2 seconds even on a cold boot.

For work every second counts. If you can shave off 5 seconds on a task every day repeatedly then it's worth doing. Productivity is everything. And less time you spend waiting the more productive you can be.
>>
>>51595874
like porn and stuff?
>>
>>51601492
You should always try to keep your SSD under 70% use. Sometimes the price to size/performance is just worth picking up 250gb. Personally I think over 500gb is stupid since you're straight up better off getting a 3tb WD, no matter what
>>
It's more than a few seconds faster, especially when booting and loading newer games. The speed adds up, as well; you don't get that time back. You missed that people still don't need 4TB yet and the capabilities of using an SSD with a hard disk to get the best of both worlds.

I'm honestly surprised that it is almost 2016 and we are still debating the usefulness of SSDs.
>>
>>51595723
>You spent 200 bucks for a ludicrous amount of storage just because its a few seconds faster?
Yes

>I understand that its useful when you need reliable and shockproof storage, but I don't understand why someone would use that in a desktop PC when you can get more than 4TB for the same price.
Rotating magnetic disks are slow as fuck. 16x PCIe gen3 SSDs have a lot lower latency and incredible bandwidths.

>Did I miss something, /g/?
Yes, the obvious. You install your system on a SSD and mount /home on your rotating disk.

Some programs require that the install files/data be stored on the main drive. For instance, I have a Centos home server with Apache, I filled up 80GB SSD with website files, so I had to buy a 250GB SSD.

>>
>>51601706
>Apache
>requires files to be stored "on the main drive"
uh, no?

Just configure it, you can point it at literally any directory.
>>
You'll never go back after you've had your system on SSD. Loads instantly, no lag after the boot, everything opens before you can even blink an eye. Works especially well with some games that load a lot of textures - any sign of stutter during the gameplay is gone and loading times are nearly instant as well. Yes, they're still fairly expensive and overkill for most tasks, but it's honestly the best purchase you can make for your PC.
>>
>>51601747
Yes, but then I wouldn't be getting the benefits of the SSD. Not to mention that it's a pain in the ass to configure it to look else where for the /www when the whole lamp stack is expecting it to be at /var/www.
>>
I'm a poorfag and my desktop is 6 years old, but I still bought an SSD because I'm not retarded.
>>
>200 bux
>ludicrous amounts of storage
Uh, no? I paid about $150USD for a 500gb Samsung 850 Pro. Unless you're a horsefucking pornhoarder or pirate all the movies, 500gb is plenty for a standalone drive.

As to why I use a SSD, load times on large programs. Because even with a 10k RPM Velociraptor (which was also only 500gb and a hell of a lot more than $200) MasterCAM would take a solid 3 minutes to load up and Solidworks would take a good minute.
>>
I heard you cant just delete shit and clear up space but have to overwrite it. So like if i down'oad some 5gb game amd beat it, i cant just get that 5gb back by uninstalling?

Are ssds more durable? My hdd fucked after transporting it overseas with me
>>
>>51601788
>Yes, but then I wouldn't be getting the benefits of the SSD
That's true

>Not to mention that it's a pain in the ass to configure it to look else where for the /www when the whole lamp stack is expecting it to be at /var/www.
https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/core.html#documentroot

You think changing one line in a configuration file (two if you allow users to have their own files in their own home directory) is "a pain in the ass"?

>the whole lamp stack
PHP is a module to Apache, and MySQL doesn't give two fucks where the document root is.
>>
>>51601851
>So like if i down'oad some 5gb game amd beat it, i cant just get that 5gb back by uninstalling?
No, you "get it back".

>>51601851
>Are ssds more durable?
The answer to this is both yes and no. There are less moving parts in an SSD and also using magnetic disks are kinda flaky because they degrade in quality over time.

However, SSDs usually use memory technology that has a finite number of writes you can do (so their life expectancy is lower than of a rotating disk, although rotating disks tend to fail quite often). Also, you might be able to partly recover data from a magnetic disk with some bad sectors, if your SSD fails it tends to be catastrophic.
>>
>>51595723
Thing is with SSDs is that, the performance gain is not just in boot times, everything just becomes stupid fast, your apps launch faster, they're more responsive, everything loads up quickly, even sites that are cached, those few big games you have that take too long to load now load in seconds(I'm looking at you, FO4 and BF4) and all in all, those seconds that you shave off really do add up quickly, especially if you use your PC as much as I do. One advice that I'll always follow to heart is that you should never skimp out on stuff that you always use, it has always baffled me how people could spend a grand on a phone yet when it came to their laptop, a grand is suddenly too much, for something that they use a lot and do actual work with. Same goes for a plethora of stuff that people use so much but aren't really investing in them enough, especially if they can very much afford it.

Also, SSDs have become quite cheap now, you can get 256GB for sub 100 euros and get 3 3TB HDDs for storage, you can have the best of both worlds and if 85 euros is still too much then just get 64GB or 128GB, they're really cheap now.

1Tb 850 pro is still like $420 on sale.

I dont use much so maybe 500 iw enough considering it might fail, but then again it has a 10 year warranty
>>
>>51602227
Honestly, I'd advice against going for a 1TB SSD, just get a small one that'll fit all your apps + a big game or two and get something massive for actual storage cause while the performance gain is nice in search times, you won't really benefit from it when playing back media.

I used to use this PC with a HDD. It fucking sucked, and it wasn't bad. Core i7 4790k and GTX 970. But then i got a SSD. Menus now load at the speed of light.
>>
SSDs are cheap enough now that it's worth spending a little more money for a dedicated system/program drive to save a few seconds every time you load something.

Even if you just save a minute or two a day from quicker booting, faster starting applications, and less loading screens in games, that shit adds up to dozens of hours over the lifetime of the drive.
>>
I got one because every time I let Poser porn render I could hear my HDD being thrashed by endless seemingly random reads. Defragging didn't help, the drive would buzz louder than any other drive-related activity. It never failed after years of this, but it always worried me.

So when pricing on quality drives got to a point that I could supplant the 300GB Velociraptor, I bought an Intel 730. No more worrying coffee grinder, no more 55° temp for 30+ hours, and as a side bonus renders take about 15% less time because the queue manager's not waiting on HDD seek time.

Boot time is irrelevant because why would you ever restart your computer, and program load time isn't remarkably faster or even noticeable in some cases. So if you're buying an SSD for those reasons, I don't disagree with it being meme-tier on a desktop. Laptop drives are insufferably slow though, so probably noticeable there.
>>
>>51604829
>Boot time is irrelevant because why would you ever restart your computer, and program load time isn't remarkably faster or even noticeable in some cases.

I used to keep the whole system except for /usr, /home, and /var on one tiny SSD (read-only /usr is outdated. packages are not built according to UNIX tradition and always install to /usr, and sometimes /usr/local, not /opt or a subdirectory in ~)

Then redhat's "great idea" of "simplifying" the system layout came out

That idea was symlinking everything to /usr because what sun does is always a good idea (see: PAM, the best thing ever made)

It has nothing to do with fans. It has to do with the massive component-level voltage spike that happens every time you push the power button, with or without a UPS.

The first 100ms of startup are orders of magnitude harsher on your components than the following 1000ms. I've personally had three hard drives, one motherboard, two sticks of ram and two CPUs die immediately on startup, following prolonged and uninterrupted run time. I just lost 14TB of data to it last week in fact, when my boot drive corrupted itself, which in turn corrupted my RAID's partition table on boot. The machine had previously had 246 days of uptime before the last restart and hadn't actually been powered off since 2013 when I expanded the array from 6TB. First shutdown and zap.

How poor are you anyway where you can't afford to leave a computer idling at 60 watts? Keeping the lights on must be quite the struggle.
