Pic related is how I use laptops.

I sold my desktop last year and bought a nice 17" notebook to replace my shitty old laptop.

I have it sat up on my desk with a regular keyboard and mouse most of the time but can pick it up and take it with me when travelling which I do fairly often.

Less cables and noise is one nice thing, takes up far less space and I can hdmi out to my tv if I want to watch movies and shit.

This. If you have a bit of cash lying around you can get a resonably fast laptop. Sure, it won't compete with the latest desktops, but do you really need to? The convienience and mobility is better to have anyway in my opinion.

I can play modern games on medium settings with my laptop, then when I go travelling I just throw it in my bag and away I go. Can even use it on the train or plane.

Compare that to moving around a massive and heavy desktop case and I wot m8. I think for a lot of people it's this irrational desire to just have the fastest of the fastest, even though there really is very little improvement in the experience at the end of the day (aside from some highly specilised tasks which many people don't ever do)

Get a laptop and external mouse and maybe keyboard too. Plug into a monitor and there you go. Best of both worlds

I don't think it is the best of both worlds. Then you have all your stuff split between multiple hard drives, have to download shit twice etc. Depends on person to person I suppose. If you travel around a lot it'd be worth spending that extra for a high-end laptop. If you only ever use a computer in your house then desktop would be fine. It's still massive & cumbersome

I fell for the fast of the fastest meme.
My last desktop build was an FX6300 and I never really did shit with it. Now I use an i3-4030u @ 1.9Ghz smooth as silk for my usage and that includes VM work cross compiling some shit for windows.

The only bottleneck is my HDD. I haven't gone for the SSD meme yet but I'm worried since I download videos to watch in my free time when I may not have internet connection and it's about 1GB worth a day. That's a lot of writing going on over time and I don't want to kill the thing even though people say the outlive spinnin diskz.

13" MBA has 1440*900, if you mean non-retina. The retina 15" MBP wasn't that heavy, but I use a 15.4" T60p as my baseline for laptop weights. Also, before I had the Air, I ran OS X on a T420 with all components working except the SD reader. It's 14" and 16:9, can run 10.9, 10.10, 10.11 all point-releases so far with very little work to set up.
