Eclipse is garbage. Use IntelliJ.

Use Sublime Text. Eclipse is unwieldy and bloated.

As a newbie at Java, I really fucking like it. Better than BlueJ, which I had to use for my first programming course.

It's complete shit.

enjoy typing out names like RefreshAuthorizationPolicyProtocolServerSideTranslatorPB like its still the stone age. I don't even know how to spell half the java classes. Sometime, the suggestions are so smart I just press Ctrl Space once and it just types out the whole program for me (saved quite a bit of time in university)

Eclipse is shit OP.

Your school probably isn't allowed to distribute IntelliJ iDEA. It's the best IDE for Java out there, but it's proprietary.
Netbeans comes second, and is still miles better than Eclipse.

They probably want you to use Eclipse so you can look at the pretty little graphics that show classes in boxes, connected to each other, to show you how OOP works. It's bullshit anyway, you should be able to understand it mentally and not need it drawn.

Intelij and if you like your sanity use android studio for Android dev.

NetBeans is also good, don't mind the shills focus on writing good software not on how elusive the language you use is.

I just like a couple specific plugins in Sublime and the way they work.
