Dell Dimension l100r reporting in. Just got this beauty and plan on adding an Ethernet and wifi card, plus a Radeon HD 9000. It came with a whatever sound card that's good enough for me.

Post your legacy PCs along with what you do with them.

Pic related, the Penty III next to its socket that came on this old Dell.

There is literally no point in repurposing anything before the core 2/Athlon 64 era.
>>
>>51514510
I don't agree. I have another pentium 3 rig that my kids use as a web surfing/doing writing assingments pc and it does the job without a problem.

Had to boot it up since I didn't have any current screenshots on my other workstation.

It's mostly just a hardware project but I do shitpost from it occasionally as well as use it as a file archiver/server.
>>
>>51514469
What are some old beige ATX computer cases to get? I really want to use them as a modern case. Noone makes that style anymore.
>>
>>51514951
Jfc senpai. It's beautiful.
>>
>>51514966
Do you want like a beige case from strictly a case manufacturer, or do you mean like from an older model PC?
>>
>>51514966
These particular cases were very popular with whitebox builders from around 1996/7 to 2001, I have a couple of them laying around, they're reasonably spacious and were used for just about any kind of build imaginable from low-end AMD K6 shitboxes to dual-slot PIII/Athlon dream machines.

The one in the pic is an In Win CA-V500 I found googling around that some site is selling for $20 NIB, seems to be a later generation made during the early P4 era since it has a side air duct.
>>
>>51514551
P3 is ok for wiki but not facebook or youtube

win-win for a kid pc lol
>>
>>51515096
Age is the only parental controls I need.
>>
>>51515096
Shit, I could actually see some higher-end P3s being able to handle Facebook just fine with a modern browser. Might be a little slow to load though unless you're running a Tualatin with RDRAM.
>>
>>51515096
And like I said, this one's getting a Radeon 9000 HD, it should be able to do youtube just fine at 720p.
>>
>>51514987
Older Model PC preferably. But if a modern manufacturer makes ones that look like this. I've seen the Lian-Li ones but they have a modern minimalist look.

>>51514560
then that'd be cool too.

>>51515064
That looks really nice. I'll look into maybe getting this. Thanks.
>>
>>51515142
It also helps to know what you're going to do with it, smaller cooling solutions can fit in the one i have now, but the psu flods over the cpu heatsink so you have to be sure. If it's something like a high powered workstation than an InWin is a good idea.
>>
>>51515187
its really not gonna be doing any major work. But it draws a ton of power because I used to be really into SUPER FAST HARDWARE when I built it. So it needs to have at least moderately good cooling. That's the biggest reason I haven't switched it out yet.

I just really like the aesthetic.
>>
>>51515426
Should be fine, they seem like it would be easy enough to mod some bigger fans in or mount a radiator if you needed one.
>>
Got a really old pentium 3 rackmount with 256mb of DDR ecc ram, really dont know what to do with it

Its a pretty neato rack
>>
>>51516299
What rage card is that? It looks like an XL.
>>
>>51516334
Dont actually know, never got far enough in it to find out
>>
>>51516349
It says on the chip, but I can;t make it out.
>>
I'm struggling to get the motherboard out of my system right now and it'sdriving me nuts. I just want to clean the case.
>>
>>51516173
>>51516299
Might useful as a web server/ssh box, at least that's what I'd do with it personally.

Shit, you could even rig it up for games if you wanted, it looks like a Tualatin system. Just get a hold of a better PCI graphics card.

>>51516362
yeah, it's an XL
>>
>>51516408
I have an old XL I'm putting in my machine until the 9000HD gets here. 8MB.
>>
>>51516408
Trying to get it to boot somehow but its not going well, need to try a pxe boot.

As for its purpose i really dont know what to do with it as i have a virtualization server under it
>>
>>51516391
GOT IT OUT.
>>
>>51516472
For the most part I think the only real definitive purpose something like this would have in your case is messing around and using it as a learning tool/testbed. You can learn a lot from working with old hardware, I also find it way more comfortable to take risks and experiment with gear that won't majorly screw me over should it ever for some reason fail.

I mostly put my old shit to work with general desktop use, most of what I do on >>51514560 is web surfing (mostly 4chan and wiki, email as well) and using remote access software like putty/tn5250, also occasional Photoshop, Word/Excel/Access and syncing old PDAs. I'm trying to set up TeX on it as well to give me a dedicated, distraction-free space to mess around with it. Old servers I tend to use as remote access hubs for older systems as well as file servers to allow me to efficiently transfer data between newer and older hardware.

Dunno if anything like that sounds interesting to you, play around a little and maybe you'll find something cool to do with it, like running an operating system that's difficult to virtualize or challenging yourself to deal with limited resources when programming, maybe.

What can I do with this old 2006 Celeron CPU /g/? It's just been sitting in a box for awhile.
>>
>>51516781
A 2.00GHz single core isn't that much use expecially without hyper threading. It would worl great as something basic like document writing and web surfing. The LGA775 socket is in a good spot for finding cheap motherboards right now, pared with a decent graphics card I'm sure it can be used for something more, but by itself you might even find a rare stutter in some basic things just trying to run a display at any resolution hiher thant 1920x1080.
>>
>>51516781
I can never find any way to justify using NetBurst/late-era P6 Celerons for anything other than keeping one around to compare to real hardware to show how shit they were.

Early Mendocino Celerons were very good performers (often as good as PIIs), Covington chips are interesting as oddities since they were reasonably rare and hilariously cynical, but Coppermine and up Celeron chips were hobbled by a slow FSB and unnecessarily missing features, just plain useless when top-of-the-line options can be had for almost the same cost.

You could make a hot plate out of it.
>>
>>51516924
The tray price for an SL9XL is $36 new.
>>
>>51516998
But I can sure as hell guarantee you that it's not worth it when you can pick up real Pentium D/4 systems for nearly a tenth of the price.

>>
>>51517066
Pretty good. Dunno if I would have painted it like that but when I think about it it would probably look alright when closed up.
>>
>>51516684
Yeah i was thinking the same thing, cant really get it to boot but if i do it will def show me pxe booting.

I kinda like the hub idea and the data transfer but i dont know where to begin or whatever
>>
>>51517118
no not really, it has no chassis fans at the moment, but my actual desktop next to it is a complete different story

>>51517138
going for a sleeper pc build, it looks perfect closed up
>>
>>51517166
It's pretty easy to do with Windows, with 2K server all you need to do is check a box in a folder's properties and you can share it across the network, with AFP turned on you can also share files between old PPC/68k Macs as well. Alternatively you can install OpenBSD/Debian or whatever *nix you want and use it as a terminal/general use server with ssh access, can even hang dumb terminals off of the serial port if you're in to that shit.

To that end, I'm planning to eventually set up something like that myself and use a bunch of iMac G4s I have laying around as glorified X terminals.

>>51517244
Noice, I always thought those had potential for sleepers.
>>
>>51516781
hey, that shit is made in my country.
>>
>>51514510
Maybe if all you care about is performance.

Some old hardware is comfy.
