A little less 3D FPS than the binary blob.

Last time I checked you get a framebuffer driver for virtual console with nouveau. Look up KMS.

If you use the binary driver from nvidia you are stuck with a text console. Not a big deal.


I try nouveau every couple of years, typically when I move to a new LTS distro or buy a new PC. I've always had stability issues and moved to the binary driver without bothering to troubleshoot.

Binary driver has been good to me for a long time, much longer than nouvaeau has been around.

I have a GeForce 9, no reclocking required, but I still get up to 4x better gaymen performance with the blob.

I also have some old WINE games that lock up when using nouveau, but that's probably mesa + the buggy game's fault.

Using nouveau for 2+ years (openSUSE). Never had any issues with it. But i'm not playing any games on it.

If you don't play games but have an Nvidia GPU then it's good. So if you got a Laptop with Nvidia iGPU then you should try Nouveau.

Nouveau lacks video hardware acceleration on many models and power management. I wish I could use it because muh freedoms but it would literally kill my battery.
