There is no reason to go AMD unless you're too poor to afford a graphics card right away (APUs on FM2/+) or are willing to toss hundreds of dollars away on an outdated platform due for a complete replacement next year (FX on AM3+).

Although, you will be able to enjoy relatively consistent mid-tier 1080p gaming for $500 or less with a four-core Athlon X4 860k on an FM2+ A88X motherboard and a GTX 750 Ti. With DX12, it should fare better than a Pentium G3258, which is only two cores.
Or an FX-8320E with two strong GPUs in SLI/Crossfire for a 4k gaming build on par with a $350 i7-5820x. But then you'd have to deal with SLI/Crossfire issues and CPU-bound games won't perform nearly as well as a i5-6600k, even with a significant overclock.
