I haven't heard that noise yet and SMART assures me that my HDD is at 100% health but I have heard some noises coming from it that were pretty worrying. I had to immediatly erase half my porn (drive was almost full) and now it doesn't happen anymore except when defragging.

What could be the issue?

If you want to test the drive, run DBOOT autonuke on it.
If you have any errors, toss it in the bin.

Try to spread out the files over your HDD, otherwise the data can make one side of the platter lopsided and heavier than the other and it can cause vibrations and data loss.
>>
>>47570389
How would one do that? I think it was because it was almost full. Like 30GB out of 1TB were left, once I freed up around 300GB the noise was gone. It's just there when defragging now.

Fucken Samsung. HDD is only (nearly) five years old and already noisy.

Guess there's a good reason they got out of HDD's.

Meanwhile, I have a 250GB WD refurb that I purchased 8 years ago that's still going strong.

Seagate consumer drives automatically park the head after inactivity.

There's a lot of complaint about it and that's where the majority of the failures stem from. The whole inactivity-head parking is where Seagate gets their "eco-friendly" claim from.

Luckily their enterprise line is exempt from these silly things.

I'm strongly in favor of Hitachi. The failure rate of Hitachi drives is, if I recall correctly, the lowest.

Actually all of Seagates most recent drives do this, including their performance lines. As was mentioned the enterprise drives have this feature turned off. Research this on google if you don't believe us.
