ITT: Post the first graphics card you ever purchased
6 Fucking years without any issue
I was late to the game.
Still works to this day despite the cracking die issue.
What a pimp.
I saved $150 for this as a kid in high school wanting to play Crysis on my computer.
I also later saved money to buy a 900W PSU because I didn't think about power requirements and so my old PSU died. I overshot my system's power usage by a shit ton, falling into the "future upgrades" trap.
The card now sits in my older brother's PC playing CS:GO or whatever the fuck he does on it.
>>46924668
fugg
>>46924659
later added a voodoo
could play l4d2 at 25-30 fps on 1024x768
I got one of these niggers when it came out and it still works
I had to regrease the fan (and I think I damaged it doing so)
holy shit a 512mb framebuffer these days sucks major ass
>>46924668
CS:GO is shit.
>>46924659
Good times good times
This is the first discrete graphics card I purchased.
Still running
This motherfucker right here. It could even run Crysis with medium settings @ 1024x768. At around 10 FPS, that is.
Riva TNT2. Lots of UT deathmatches won on that.
"Upgraded" to a 6200LE - boy what a totally great and not shit in any way card.
>>46924659
my first was a trio32, was 400$ when i bought it
>>46924777
I love older card designs
first there was no active or passive cooling, then there were heatsinks, then it looked like they begrudgingly put the smallest possible fan on
I still have the shirt
>>46924805
Now you get a heatsink and fan brick with a video card attached.
I think I mostly played AoE2 on it.
Its a Voodoo 3
Ive had some gpus before this, but this was the first I got with my own cash and shit and researched before buying.
>>46924809
>8800
That was a good card.
I didn't buy this card, but it was my first I later upgraded to a 9800GTX
>>46924837
Indeed. It lasted me till 2012
Bought this without knowing anything about computers and installed it in my family's shitty prebuilt pc. Went from 2 fps in GTA Vice City to around 25.
>>46924735
>>46924864
Those are the shittiest cards ever made, together with the whole GeForce 4MX line.
Likely the oldest card in the thread.
>>46924587
Damn... It could run NFSU, dude... It was the best.
No pic currently available, but I used to have a GeForce 4 that we scrapped from an older computer. Unfortunately it wasn't any good, so I couldn't benchmark it.
Friend passed this on to me and once i got a gtx 460 I passed the torch on to another friend.
Shortly thereafter Mr 9800 passed away.
Goodnight Sweet Prince
cost about $415 in mid-2007
Pretty much in constant use until 2012 when it broke. I fixed it by baking it in the oven, and it broke again in 2013
>>46924902
Actually it was this one. Radeon 9250.
>>46924900
Is it as old as this one? This is a google image of the 256 color one from my Pentium before I replaced it with a SiS one to play Quake.
Any oldfags fuck around with PCI or ISA video cards? What was that like?
Tell us stories from the before times, please.
>>46924934
I have a shitty old PCI graphics card like this. It's actually quite useful for troubleshooting if your PCIe graphics card fails and you dont have integrated graphics or any other way to see a video output (ofc you need a VGA adapter, though). You can browse the web and shit, just dont expect to be able to watch video
>>46924825
BROTHER
>>46924961
Hardware was never the issue. Your power supply was never too small, you never had to worry about having the right power cable, and there was only one place in the city to buy from. Now when it came to configuring and installing, there was your weekend gone.
>>46924934
Same age, yours was the low end though.
>>46924961
PCI? VESA was the thing back then
Galaxy GeForce GT430
I bought it at Best Buy
>>46924961
I use to play the shit out of Unreal Tournament on my voodoo 3 pci even set up some lan games with it in my high school Networking class

You faggot.
>>46924900
You know if you hold up number nine cards to the light, there are Beatle lyrics printed in the PCB?
First card purchased with my own money.
Now I have the shroud removed and two 90mm fans tied to it with rubber bands for reduced noise and temp.
>>46925014

>>46925043
I think he was emulating forum culture back then
>>46925057

still haven't upgraded.
>>46925088

ati 9200SE
It wasn't the first I bought (and back then it was still my parents' money), but the first card I remember being a great noticeable upgrade.
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP
>>46925119

I got this in 2013 and I'm still using it now.
>>46924996
Lmao I dropped into a local Future shop( electronics chain store now owned by bestbuy) and bought the 8400gs. Anything was an upgrade over my prebuilt onboard pleb GPU. Too broke to buy anything else. Mind you I was 13 and didn't know much about the difference in price/performance.
>>46925563
no idea if i got scammed when i got it it was brand new if i remember correctly when i bought it
price tag was prob 380-450€ did i get scammed?
I actually didn't "buy" this one, I traded a Best Buy gift card for it to a similarly poorfag friend so he could buy some overpriced RAM.
God I didn't miss being poor. And yet, here I am again.
>>46924587
>graphics cards
I bought one when they were called 3D cards.
Eat a dick, embryos.
>>46925143

>>46924587
First card i bought with my own cash:
Leadtek Winfast GeForce Fx 5700 256MB AGP 8x
Directx 9 ready
Used this nigger for video in/video out with my Xbox hooked up and playing games on the 19inch AOC CRT
Purchased Dec 2003
Voodoo 3dfx 4mb PCI
4 long years finally replaced this baby still runs far cry 3 on med-high settings and was so proud I could run crysis at 20-30fps on max
I was late to the PC party
>>46925831
lol same. forgot about this one.
I can't understand how back in the 90s almost no graphics card needed a fan to operate, but now in 2015 you NEED one or it catches fire.
What's stopping companies from making ultra efficient graphics cards that rely on just a heatsink? Is it because it's cheaper to just throw things together and add a leafblower to it?
>>46925905
Samefag here
Before this: Matrox Millennium II
>>46925978
Faster clocks, more cores, more heat.
>>46924587
Can't believe I remember what it was off the top of my head.
Bought it when I was in elementary school for my POS HP desktop just so I could play HL2.
Pretty good card. I also like how it doesn't have a case around it, so I can factor in cabinet air circulation to its cooling.
Later upgraded to SLI with it. But now I'm getting a single 980.
>>46925978
Blame Nvidia, they started it with the FX5's
>>46925978
> What's stopping companies from making ultra efficient graphics cards that rely on just a heatsink?
Nothing, really.
You want your passive cooling? Wait for another 10 years and you'll get a low-end card that can overperform a GTX980.
>>46926006
Scratch that, just double checked HL2 release date, and I would have been in middle school at the time, so I'm not too sure what I bought this thing for.
>>46926026
That's one of the best things about building a micro PC to stick under the TV, being able to get graphics cards for next to nothing which can max out any game from 2005.
HD 4670 512 mb, was about early 2011 so it wasn't exactly cutting edge, but alongside a pentium 4 that fucker could play tf2 and skyrim just fine.
Added this card to the one that was in the prebuilt, ATI Rage IIC 8MB.
>>46926079

>>46924587
I honestly can't remember at all. I was pretty young when I built my first computer, so I had next to no idea what I was actually putting in it.
The first GPU I can actually remember buying was a 6950.
HD4870, I must have RMA'd about £500 of equipment making that build, God bless eBuyer for putting up with me
Nvidia Riva TNT. It was an incredibly shitty card in every way even back then, and over the years I had much better experiences with Radeons. Now sporting a spanking new 290x, first desktop gpu I've had in about 10 years

>in b4 you're too young to know how Voodoo pass-thru worked
Started with a TNT2 M64, fuck that card was complete ass and it was my first major bummer in my pc gaymen life. Read about stuff and got confused, bought a geforce 2 mx400 next thinking it was the same as the "normal" geforce 2. Swore to myself that ill not fuck up next time. Saved up for long time then bought my first proper card, and i got a geforce 3 ti 200. Pc gaymen has never been the same
>>46926911
I could run Diablo II, Vice city, Mafia, Gothic, NFS Posrche unleashed etc.... glorious days.
>>46925080
>Intel i740, it ran quake 3 at 800x600 full detail!
first, 16 bit colors aren't full detail for Quake 3
second, it had to be less than 20 fps
Radeon HD 5770. Breddy good, except for the noisy fan
If this was your first graphic card, you would never buy a graphic card ever again.
It might not have had four color graphics like the CGA cards all my friends had but it kicked every other PC's ass when it came to resolution (720×348 vs 320x200). Playing the original SimCity on this baby was great. Losing two colors was a good trade off for the much clearer picture.
I have had the disturbing revelation that my first graphics card may be older than many posters on this board....
>>46926913
what did you program on it? Something in Metal?
>>46926963
>this edgy
it would be good great upgrade for me back in the days, I would tame the cooling myself
>>46926981

>>46926109
I just google ATI All in Wonder.
Also now that its mentioned, I think it was ATI All In Wonder Rage.

>>46926991
>what did you program on it? Something in Metal?
Nah, I actually wrote/ported (from X) a driver for another operating system. I'd done a few, the Savage was the only one that wasn't utterly horrible.
Riva TNT2 PCI
Later some guy told me he'd sell me a GeForce for cheap. I bought it but it turned out to be a "Gemini PCI junk which was horrible".
>>46927013

>eternal poorfag
>graphics were gifted, traded, integrated and gifted again
shit, i guess the first card i have bought for actual money would be a used FX5200 for like $3, only to take the passive radiator off it for a second FX5200 with more VRAM bought last year
damn hate those tiny whining fans on cards that work fine with passive cooling
definitely not the oldest card i've got though
>>46927041
HAS YOUR HEARING...Oh never mind.
8500GT 512MB. Bought this badboy to play CoD4 back in 2007.
I had no idea what i was doing back then
My pc was a prebuild back then, this was the first gpu i bought on itself
For some reason the cable tuner was important to me
best 13th birthday ever
Voodoo Banshee 16MB PCI
Paired with an Intel Pentium III 750Mhz and 320MB RAM
I never bought one, but I lusted after the ATi X-800 line.
I still wonder what would've happened if I'd built that gaming PC 10 years ago instead of buying an Xbox with Halo 2.
