ITT shitty technology that's still around and won't go away.

It's 2015 and paper currency still has to be perfectly flat and inserted face-up in order to be properly detected and used in vending machines and ATM's.
>>
don't most atms still use XP
>>
vending machines that take credit cards are becoming pretty common. Hell the air pump at the gas station i use has had a credit card reader for several years
>>
>>46923894

For some reason, the US still uses magnetic strips instead of smart cards. It's pretty crazy.
>>
>>46923943
Because we like to 'keep things American'
seriously there are still people out there who are like, "What do you mean you don't take a check?!"

so if we start using a card, oh its big brother, oh its obama, oh its because of nato bullshit fucking moron faggots
God I hate how retarded my nation can be.
>>
>>46923894

More recent vending machines have improved slots and sensors that almost never spit your money back out. Although in fairness, I live in canada and our bills are fucking indestructibly firm now.
>>
>>46923966
>seriously there are still people out there who are like, "What do you mean you don't take a check?!"

This is the best reaction when someone said this at my old job
I think the only places that still take them are government offices? It's seriously the easiest way to steal shit
>>
>>46923943
>Leaking my card info over RFID every time I use it
God no. I mean, I could get an RFID shielding sleeve and put it in my wallet, but still.
>>
Tape backup is still around and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
>>
>>46923966

Dude, the fucking card readers at Target can read smart cards. They have the functionality. That function is just disabled.

>>46923983

As far as tearing goes, yeah. They tend to stick to each other, though... And they don't like heat very much. Figures we'd make currency that can't handle high temperatures...

>>46923992

For payments below 50$, all you need to do is tap the card on the reader and you're g2g. It's super fucking convenient. Just get an RFID blocking wallet.

holy shit

Even Africans have managed how to reliably deploy electronic payments without having to use cash
>>

ITS disabled?!
Wow...

"I'm not into that new age stuff"
"this is whats wrong with the country"

I'm starting to see a few american credit cards with the chip shit like in european credit cards.

>>

They did it without smartphones or nfc. It's a really interesting case study.
>>
>>46924034
Pretty sure it's just the USA that is behind.

Every other country uses cashless transactions, has no use for "checks", and hardly uses magnetic strips anymore.

It's so strange that the USA is both the most advanced country in the world and also the most backwards.

>It's 2015 and paper currency still has to be perfectly flat and inserted face-up in order to be properly detected and used in vending machines and ATM's.

Jesus you Americunts sure use outdated technology.I live in a second world country and our vending machines and ATMs accept bank notes on what ever side they're turned and regardless what face is pointing out.Plus, debit cards and credit cards all have chips on them,or even additional RFID on them. But I dont remeber when I used any of my cards.Got mobile banking so I pay everything through NFC or by scanning barcode image on the phone screen,if the shop uses older system.
>>
>>46924054

Significantly reduces credit card fraud.

But I guess you don't mind having your account locked down twice a year because of irregularities in the payments (Fun fact: If you're ever going to Malaysia, make sure to tell your bank/credit card company first, otherwise they'll lock it the moment you make a purchase there).

>>46924075

Pretty much.

There's also a big fight between the two different standards (Java and Multos), but that's more a question of contracts with larger companies for the cards they actually put out.
>>
>>46924059
probably because americans aren't retarded like yuros so they don't use shitty new fads just because someone slaps a buzzword on it

> Following an Oct. 1, 2015, deadline created by major U.S. credit card issuers MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express,card-present fraudliability will shift to whoever is the least EMV-compliant party in a fraudulent transaction.

Banks don't like liability so they'll probably issue chip cards to everyone by then

One of my family members works in the field. It's a lot more secure than that, at least for the ones issued by banks. Stuff like bus passes could potentially be easier to fuck with, but then there's no point as you wouldn't profit from it.
>>
>>46923992
It's not fucking RFID. It's wireless smart card. It can't be cloned by capturing the transaction.

Oh God, that spelling, I know you yanks have to have it your way, but please, it's spelt 'cheque.' And every time I see it spelt 'check', I can't help but think that whoever wrote it never learnt how to use the letter 'q.'
>>
>>46924289
RFID is not the same as contactless smart cards defined in "ISO/IEC 14443". The latter is designed not to be cloned. Implementations can suck but the protocol is secure by design.

Maybe Mythbusters confused the two as you and couldn't air their show cause it contained false information and conclusions.

>>46924625
Thanks. This just proves my point. They are talking about RFID. Credit cards do NOT use simple RFID. They use contactless smart cards defined by "ISO/IEC 14443".
>>
>>46924693
I think the only way you can cheat PayPass cards is to carry around a merchant transmitter and charge max $100 from victims.
>>
Just because it is new doesn't mean it is better
>>

Yeah, but the transactions are logged and the merchant transmitter should be registered I assume. Instantly v&.

America never ceases to surprise me at how backwards it can be. Here in my backwater country we can put stacks into ATM in whatever position and the machine will accept it.
>>
>>46924059
The country that builds infrastructure towards some end-goal tends to keep that infrastructure long past its end-of-life.
Japan did that with pretty much all personal electronics
USA did that with financial transaction systems, internet, electrical code, among other things.

Honestly, USA pioneered so much shit that there's so much old shit left behind that needs to be thrown out and done again.

No, I mean casino-like read-only plastic chips. Just smaller. Secure and water-proof and almost indestructible (unless you are exposed to an EMP or something).
>>
>>46925303
How on earth is that better than cash?
>>

"Paper" currency is actually made of a type of cloth.

The American Dollar is actually pretty well engineered. They get much longer lifetime out of their dollars than most other cloth-based currency.

>>46925441

But you're probably paying for gas, grabbing a coffee or a water bottle and some jerky or something inside, though.

Selling something at a loss is a very standard way of getting a customer. That's why certain products like yogurt are always on sale at grocery stores. People go where the sale is and then just purchase all their groceries there.

Lowest income tax bracket in Quebec ends up being 30% (combined federal + provincial). Have both a Goods and Service Tax as well as a Quebec Sales Tax and you actually pay taxes on the act of paying taxes for it.

Moving out of that shithole was the best decision I ever made.
