What does a $300 case bring to the table that a $100 case doesn't? It's just a shell for the computer, as long as it has decent airflow, decent aesthetics, enough room for your components and dust filters, what more could you possibly hope for? All these are present in many ~$100 cases, such as the official meme case of /g/, the Fractal Design R4.

This is exactly the point. Decent aesthetics is a very subjective term to describe a case. While some might think a gaudy NZXT Phantom looks absolutely gorgeous, others might vomit at the sight of it.
Talking about functionality then there's basically next to none differentiation. Each case houses PC components and is able to provide cooling for them.
It's just a matter of preference what case you'll end up with. And if you have the extra dough to blow and don't mind paying extra, why not?
