How many of you have moved partially or completely away from 'cloud' providers? The last year I've been slowly itching my way away but curious who else has done this. The increase in privacy is nice but the tradeoff in usability seems huge.
>>
>moved partially or completely away from 'cloud' providers

I've never used a "cloud" service
>>
It's easy to avoid all of these. Some examples

>chrome
Firefox
>apple
literally anything else
>ghostery
ublock
>teamspeak
mumble
>utorrent
transmission
>android
don't use gapps
>foobar
cmus
>opera
firefox
>mirc
irssi
>netflix
torrents
>ubuntu
debian
>lastpass
keepassx

etc

What do you mean cloud providers? Even if you don't store "your" data on cloud servers, you're still reliant on them via centralized shit like google, etc.
>>
>>46613393
That's great. What do you use instead for common tasks? (Email, file sync, etc.) Looking for alternatives to what I'm currently using.
>>
>>46613346
Wow i just realised i don't use anything on that list, where's my prize?

The NSA can have my Amazon password. What are they going to do?
>buy things with my credit card
>see my order history
Oh fuck! Call the cops!

You have zero seconds to explain why I shouldn't use LastPass. I don't store my email password in there, but I do store everything else in it. Hard mode: don't accuse LastPass of having a backdoor / way to revail plaintext passwords without knowing the master password.

Twitter is not a botnet. How on earth is Twitter a botnet?

Spotify uses your upload bandwidth for its free service. Don't like it? Don't use it. My listening is a mix of 90% locally stored music and 10% Spotify. I have bandwidth to spare.

On what planet is Netflix a botnet?

Everything is "the cloud". it means nothing. It's like when /g/ calls something a botnet.

All this criticism is just retardation being given too much free reign to post.

Firefox privacy guide

Passive Edition:
>uBlock, be sure to disallow non-intrusive ads and add the EasyPrivacy and social blocking lists it offers.
>HTTPS-Everywhere
>Blender
>network.http.referer.XOriginPolicy 1
>network.cookie.cookieBehavior 1
>network.prefetch-next false
>network.dns.disablePrefetch false
>dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled false
>malware.enabled off
>safebrowsing.enabled off

Some work required:
>Self Destructing Cookies
>Flashblock

Autism Edition:
>NoScript
>Policeman

These things will improve your privacy but mostly from the websites themselves and possibly people that are not the NSA watching your tubes.

If you want actual anonymity you're going to have to use Tor or Tails. A VPN will also work if you only want to be anonymous from the various websites you visit.

Redditors are literal retards who downvote you if you don't mark your sarcasm.

The civilized 4channers know to think critically about the meaning behind every post, and think that /s ruins perfectly good jokes and makes the poster look foolish.
>>
>>46614065
Not him, but see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe%27s_law

If there needs to be a wikipedia article about how easily people misread sarcasm on the internet, I think it's fair game to make it abundantly clear when you're sarcastic.
>>
>>46614073
Kay so some of those are about:config stuff tell me more about those and does the policeman plugin have a hard learning curve to be autism or is it just the amount of control it has making it autistic?

>The civilized 4channers
>know to think critically about the meaning behind every post
This is that sarcasm you meant, right?
>>
>>46614100
You have to go through tons of cross site requests for data on like every website so unless you wanna spend up to an entire minute on every website configuring the cross site requests, don't bother.
>>
>>46614125
Okay, I don't agree with the NoScript being under Autism but maybe I'm just used to it now.
>>
>>46614117
I mean, if you're smart you actually do consider the humor possibilities of a post being a joke rather than just being retarded.

But most 4channers and redditors don't think that hard and get baited more easily than a carp.
>>
>>46614146
4chan has too strong a trolling culture for people to engage seriously. Someone could tell you that they support/use/like X and if you oppose/eschew/dislike X then you have trouble understanding why they disagree with you. Rather than put oneself in their shoes, people on 4chan just assume they're getting trolled.

Amazon, Spotify and Netflix have algorithms to determine what you would like according to what you've buyed/listened/watched

Twitter is a botnet my friend, the mexican government had the peñabot network to spread positive propanda about our current president and identify rebels. Why was this allowed? No one knows, but if this happened in my 3rd world country I can imagine what happens up north with you.

That's right, keep all your secret info in the cloud. No chance big bother could ever see it, nope.
>>
>>46615288
Stay away from Ghostery. Their company plays a dual role in advertising. Ghostery blocks sites from getting your info but it takes note of ads blocked, and sends that info to advertisers so they can change their ads to avoid being blocked. This is why everyone is getting away from them.

Right, qBit is the only good alternative, I've been using it for a while before switching, but it just won't work properly with my seedbox. It might take ages just to connect, not connect at all or download at 50 Kb/s. With uTorrent it works perfectly. Also can't seed files at full speed, usually crashes, uses more CPU, and torrent list that vanishes every once in a while.
Same seedbox prob with Deluge. Tixati isn't worth trying. Transmission's UI is too minimalistic, at least for me.

not him but it depends what music you listen to and what you listen to it on. if you listen to black metal on a portable mp3 player, FLAC isn't right. knowing audiophiles i can safely say that absolutely none of their music benefits from such high quality either, as it is all trash bands and alternative music recorded in everything but high quality audio studios, but hey, you all use apple products and they have decent storage capacities and you aren't smart enough for compromise.

Yes, quantization distortion relative to perception depends on the content of the file, the format, and its bitrate. Yes, the environment you're listening and your needs relative to the capabilities of your device, play a role. No, that doesn't make mp3 any better.

>knowing audiophiles i can safely say that
No you clearly can't because you just went off on a tangent of inane thoughts that are mostly incorrect to begin with. You can hear differences between a 320 kb/s mp3 and the CD source. At 128 kb/s, those differences are hardly subtle, they're as plain as day. The argument for transparency is gone.

Again, 128 kb/s mp3 has little reason to exist. There are better formats. The quality is horrible. Etc. It isn't about compromise, it's a realistic understanding of how things work.

>>
>>46622635
What about private trackers?

The only part of my library I've been unable to find in flac is an old cassette where only 20 or so were even made. Someone ripped that in 320 kb/s mp3, for some damn reason. Some album by Alcian Blue as well.

What can't you find? Genuine curiosity.
>>
>>46622611
if there were no reasons for 128 kbps to exist, it wouldn't. it is an excellent compromise of size and quality. 320 vs 128 is a 7 megabyte different, 3 to 10 MB. this is extreme, and in no way is it so noticable as to be worth an extra 66 percent size, especially if you are an uploader or host who is distributing this media. you wouldn't know, you probably don't contribute.

regardless of you audiophiles, i will continue to rip and distribute 128kbps music, and sometimes even 96kbps music, while you shiver in agony.

The Pink Noise / Man Made Hill - Split (Beniffer Editions) [128, CBR]
Sociedades En Tetra Brik - Alergina Vectoris [256, CBR]
Un Caddie Renversé dans L'herbe - Like a Packed Cupboard But Quite... [FLAC, my own rip]
Laughing Hands - Ledge [320, cbr]

I don't have a what.cd account since I have shitty internet. I have a waffles.fm but it's parked since forever because it's useless. I use slsk, shitload of blogs I follow around and my own rips as sources.

Allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go.

Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.

Intels main problem is AMT, which has its own dedicated dhcp server and literally can not be disabled. ICC is also shady as fuck by intentionally sabotaging compiling on non-Intel CPUs

Intel has an advantage in that their GPU drivers are 100% FOSS

AMD contributes to an open GPU driver, but still maintain a proprietary one. AMD has also committed to supporting coreboot, a foss bios replacement

Neither provices hardware schematics

AMD is nothing particularly special, but Intels AMT is an absolute atrocity

That's /g/'s definition.

This is taken from Wikipedia: A collection of Internet-connected programs communicating with other similar programs in order to perform tasks. This can be as mundane as keeping control of an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channel, or it could be used to send spam email or participate in distributed denial-of-service attacks.

This board is not just one person. There are people that regularly post on this board that do hate anything that isn't open-source though.
>For some reason they think companies and employees should work for free and not monetize things - all while sitting in their basement leeching off of their parents.
Many here follow the teachings of RMS, who doesn't mind paying (if he could do so anonymously).
He believes in freedom, and will be seriously offended if you amount his works to simply open-source.
>They also pretend open source is safer, when none of them have ever audited the source code, they assume someone else will do the work for them.
This is a highly controversial topic. Personally, I do believe that popular open-source software is generally safer to use than closed-source, and I believe this for the following reasons:
1) With popular open-source software, source code is reviewed constantly, especially updates to the source code.
2) You know exactly what is happening behind the scenes, and you know that whether or not the program you are running is malicious or harmless.

Well, don't spend all your time here...

You are giving up control of your most sensitive information to a third party and keeping it in the cloud. Even though they say your info is encrypted on their end, there is no way to really know since it is all closed-source and proprietary. They have also had their share of security breeches.

Well, if companies can lie, there's no way to know at all, regardless of open-source stance.
They could release some random source code that looks good and pretend they use it, but really use something else.
