I guess it's like building a hotrod. Starts out as a hunk of shit but you can build it up to be something cool
>>
Really asking this question seriously, as a windows fag I was interested by this and came here looking for wisdom.

Is this the new desktop thread?

This isn't my desktop. But fuck it why not?
>>
>>45818357
Because no matter what you want to do, you can.

That simply isn't the case for closed source software.

Whats a good distro to start with?
>>
>>45818420

I personally like my Ubuntu because
>streamlined
>low on resources
>better DPI scaling for my fullHD 14" screen
>I decide what happens with updates / software
>in love with Unity and it's customizability and functionality
>you want something? write your own bash script. simple. functional.
>mpv cpu is 10% less on Ubuntu than on my Windows dualboot

why dualboot?
>GW2.exe
>Photoshop.exe

Then tell me how to watch Netflix on chromium
>>
>>45818468
I read something about ubuntu having spyware, although windows probably has 10x more spyware than anything else.
>>
>speed
>mostly virus and malware free
>quick access to milions of freewarez
>highly customizable
>community
>increased understanding of computer in general
>>
>>45818420
I started using it because it was much faster than windows. I love the idea that I just need a bit of common sense to avoid viruses, the command line is awesome and the whole thing is built around freedom.
>>
>>45818473
Netflix is a proprietary platform. That doesn't count.
but there's theoretically a way
>>45818463
I don't know. Debian until you hate it and then switch to Gentoo? That's what I did
>>
Really great to run nginx on for websites.
>>
>>45818482
this plus :
>more secure by design
>very good hardware compatibility
>you can make and use what you want (from very user friendly distros to building your own system from scratch)
>more choice
>more freedom
>>
>>45818357
Linux kernel is better than NT. NT doesn't event have SCHED_FIFO
>>
>>45818480
Anything can have spyware, get an LTS release for a more stable system with frequent updates on security.
>>
Ubuntu is a good starting distro. Its usable for average people ootb. But I'd recommend xubuntu. With a bit of customization, it feels and looks good.
>>
>>45818473
Don't know about chromium, but Chrome version 37 and up has support for Netflix on Ubuntu.

Hi I'm George,
>>

You can remove the spyware from Ubuntu with :

sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping
>>
>>45818555
or use MATE instead of unity
>>
>>45818555
>>45818569

>>
>>45818594
I have no fucking clue, recently started playing again.
Total hours played: 10.
>>
>>45818601
Just make sure you don't just linux by the state of unity

Linux is about choice, so if Ubuntu is a piece of shit (it is) you can literally use anything else
>>
How would CSGO run in ubuntu or xubuntu?

Everyone says this but as someone who uses both I don't see it.

The reason i like to use Ubuntu too. I have a 27" 2560x1440 monitor and fonts/applications look ugly when I use windows 8 "hidpi" mode.

I like how linux desktop enviroments let you install sets of high resolution icons that look beautiful when scaled up like the numix icon set. I know you can replace icons in windows too but you're forced to do it individually.

I also like the gnome 3 hidpi scaling that makes the fonts in most of my installed linux programs look good.

Gnome 3's hidpi scaling is still not as good as OSX but it's getting there. In a few years it will be just as good.

Biggest reason for not using Linux:

>I'm not a wizard
and searching for help online doesn't help either because they all assume everyone already is at least a wizard in training.

I would if I had a friend who used it and could help me out..
>>

Is there a way to install the spyware if you don't use unity?

If we look at overall shit-range compatibility then sure, if actual good support of any single-named (relatively) new piece of hardware, then never.
>>
Hey guys noob here how do I dual boot easily?
>>
>>45820690
GRUB
>>

I said it because now you don't have to spend 5 hours to configure networking
