There are still other open trackers, (KAT, Demonii, etc) though I don't know how much I trust them.
Otherwise, it depends what you are looking for. Private trackers are probably you best bet for files on a particular topic.
If you want anime, Nyaa.se seems decent.
If you enjoy hoarding random crap, vist >>>/t/ occasionally and filter "jav", "*javjunkies*" and "*sukebei.nyaa*".

Piratebay is the most popular torrent site in the world, and you'd think that in this internet era where everybody knows how to search for shit, that people would just google "Piratebay alternative" or something, but nope. They're basically lost without it, and piracy is semi-effectively deterred for most people until it comes back up, and/or a small percentage of people wise up and learn how to internet more effectively.

I think the inertia has less to do with ability to use a search engine and more to do with trust.

TBP was/is a reasonably respected site. There was generally at least one sane person in the comments, and you knew that a search there was going to pull up at at least some relevant results.

Pulling up a list of torrent search sites from Google/Wikipedia/Wherever is trivial. Figuring which are any good will take time and effort.
