Well my "heart" is divided in two, Fedora and Debian
Debian - First distro I used, I can handle it very well and if I have problems with other distros I just switch to debian again

Fedora - I feel it stable, fast and gets the job done (at least on my machine) and I like the updated packages, for the things I do, it's like a debian with stable packages

I keep going back to Windows 7 because it just fucking rocks, it's the best operating system Microsoft ever created and I'm damned pissed they dumped it so fast to pursue Windows 8. We deserve a proper Service Pack 2, seriously, but they're never going to honor us loyal customers and provide us with one, those fuckers.

As for Linux, I've used it off and on since Slackware 1.0 well over 20 years ago and I still just can't find myself sticking with it. There's just something missing with Linux in any form or distro or variation that irks the fuck outta me and I can't figure out precisely what it is.

I can pick a distro, get it set up, optimize and tune it, and I just get sick of dealing with all the little issues that crop up that require the command line. If I wanted a command line OS I'd still be fucking using DOS, seriously.

Things are different now, and I'll be running Windows 7 for many years to come. Windows 8/8.1 is utter horrid garbage from start to finish, and Windows 10, good lord, don't even fucking get me started.

I just wish I could figure out that one thing that irks me so badly about Linux (of any kind) that keeps me from using it. I do use it from time to time but I end up using VMware's converter tool to take my Windows installation and turn it into a virtual machine to use on that Linux distro and I find myself spending MORE time using Windows as a guest OS on Linux than I do Linux itself.

I've always said Linux sucks, and for me 20+ years later it still does.

I recently bought an msata ssd and planned to install gentoo to it
congrats for me, I managed to do it
however, getting it to a functional state is another issue entirely
Portage is a pain in the ass, but admittedly I have zero experience with it. In my favor though, it's not very clear on what you're supposed to do, nor are the docs helpful either
For example, I want to install GTK+ just to get some gtk applications working, but for one reason or another, it refuses to compile and gives me a convoluted error message that I can hardly decipher

Not him but the kernel has as many or more lines of code,as the rest of the OS combined together.

>>45486025
what exactly can you operate with just a kernel? use your damn brain m8, in order to have a usable system you need more than just a kernel, you need a shell, supporting tools, and any software considered to be standard for an OS to be distributed with.

that said, its irrelevant, the single greatest contribution that the GNU project made to free software was the GPL, which probably sees more use than the linux kernel on its own, and brought copyleft licensing, as well as the concept of free as in freedom software into the mainstream.

Fedora, but with KDE because Winbabby.

I use ubuntu with mate because it's the least headache with the best performance at the least bloat. I was using Lubuntu because I like the traditional layout and everything, but it's buggy and the graphics don't behave quite right. I liked Arch in so far that I liked installing from source was easy and I got to make the whole thing to my liking, but it broke all the goddamned time and I always ran into weird issues that I never even considered. Just didn't want to waste all my time on it. I also get too bored to finish a Gentoo install, so I never finished that. What I'd really like is the customizability of a Gentoo, but with the ability to sort of press some buttons and stuff and create a live USB of it.

Ubuntu because on every machine I've put it on, it's either just worked or had the least amount of shit that needed fixing.

I've thought about trying one of the easymode Arch install methods provided installing the drivers for my Nvidia card isn't a total pain in the dick.
>>
>>45487943
Install gentoo instead.

sudo emerge -av nvidia-drivers
done.

there's a second one from the article about kernel, where OS is referred to by it's other name.

As long as it has bash my scripts will work

Mint because it just werks and has a fuck tonne of packages. Stable, never had any issues ever.

That said I've been using arch for the past two months. I keep breaking it somehow, and I'll burn 3 days reading through forums and the wiki trying to fix shit. Somehow though I fucking love it. It makes my autisms tickle.

no. what youre doing is trying to call an engine a car. we already have a name for such a thing, its called an engine. we call it a car when the chassis, fittings, and supporting hardware are added.
>>
>>45488196
in your comparison, engine is an operating system, fittings are userspace programs, and whole car is os distribution.
this is what operating system always meant, you're the one wanting to change meaning of terms most likely because of stallman, then you tell me to think for myself. the irony

Slackware.

Installs on every computer, out-of-the-box.
Doesn't do shit without your say-so.
AlienBOB seems to be everywhere in the Slackiverse, answering noob questions and being a generally helpful guy.
Everything command-line orientated is well-documented, instead of documenting the GUI and leaving the CLI to nights of frustration and anger.

This, already posted in this thread but the real reason Slackware is so good is because it teaches why things work from the ground level, so you don't get shoddy band-aid fixes at high-level while things go catastrophic at the low level.
>>
>>45476360
You mean Gentoo. Arch is there with Slackware. Gentoo is over-engineered, where Arch focuses on the simplicity of a greatly engineered operating system.

All three of these systems are great, but Gentoo really stands out because it's my favorite. Why?

Mainly because of bragging rights instead of the customization for me.

Just kidding, I use Google's Chrome OS.

I like XFCE reasonably well, though it doesn't do much, fucking launches shit on startup I've expressly configured it not to, and has the required linux-standard shitty taskbar/startmenu with a look and feel from 1992.

Otherwise I don't really give a fuck. As long as Debian is upstream they are pretty much all the same to me.

Debian, because I can switch to minimal or a full featured install or go for an unstable/testing distro (be it a fresh install or just change the repos)

But then again, it's just out of comfort, I'm not very well educated on the freedom aspect of it.

which Linux OS is the best for a newbie as a desktop replacement? give me a decent list of os to try

I here amazing things about arch but its not newbie friendly, would like that to be my main os

whats something simpler so i can get a good basis on this freedom everyone speaks about?

Linux Mint Cinnamon.

Ubuntu
Mint
OpenSuse

Probably Fedora

you can avoid systemd on debian. When you're on wheezy, install sysvinit-core and then install init. Systemd will be left out when you do dist-upgrade. Otherwise systemd is a one way street. Once you upgrade, you can't go back.
>>

Debian is like an AK-47. Old, classic, but it gets the job done. Rock solid reliable.
>>
>>45497518
You're describing Debian Stable. For the newest software you're also good with Debian or Ubuntu which is based on Debian Testing and or Unstable.
Debian is simply the professional standard all non Debian based distributions are irrelevant.
