>>
>>45447272
Whatever man, just use wpa_supplicant directly. Create a configuration file:

network={
ssid="ssid_here"
psk="wpa pwd here"
}

Then:
wpa_supplicant -Dnl80211 -i<your wireless interface> -c <your configuration file>
(switch tty or pass the -B parameter to wpa supplicant to put it in the background
dhcpcd <your wireless interface>

Of course, this assumes you're using DHCP.

for some reason Netgear decided to be niggers and mix the authentication types (because that would never lead to problems), so I don't even know what to do here other than just connect the fucking ethernet and admit defeat
>>
Why do people say arch is hard to install?
Literally did it on my first try after a month of using Linux.
Then I couldn't be bothered setting up a DE and started from scratch with the evo installer.
Why was arch buttmad and forced them to switch from their graphical installer to a CLI/graphical one. As if it changed anything, its still easy and fast as shit.

just boot up a graphical livecd (doesn't matter which) and connect to wifi graphically

if you don't care much for learning to connect to wifi from the command line, don't, you don't need to

forcing yourself to learn things you don't want to will just push you away from linux
>>
>>45447882
Please stop with the slurs. Calling netgear niggers/faggots will not solve your wifi problem.
>>
I've discovered the wpa_passphrase section isn't in the wpa_supplicant.conf file

at least, when I ran a grep NETGEAR on it, it didn't show up

>>45447910
heh there's no danger of that, I've been with Linux way too long to give up that easily

>>45447905
I might but I want to be a little more stubborn and see if I can figure it out
>>
>>45447882
Wait a second: which wpa_supplicant file did you use? How many lines are there in it?

Just try with the bare minimum one i posted earlier and try to see if it works. (launch wpa_supplicant without the -B switch to see if authentication succeeds)
>>
>>45447951
also this is where it starts diverging from the wiki, the wiki refers to /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf and there only seems to be a directory in /etc called wpa_supplicant, with the wpa_supplicant.conf inside it, maybe why this isn't working so great

>>45447962
I followed the wiki where it says run

# wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp3s0 -c <(wpa_passphrase "ssid" "psk")
>>
>>45447979
Omit the -B switch and post the result.

Make sure there are no other instances of wpa_supplicant running.

it may well be the router after all

>>
>>45448034

>>

>>
>>45448049

>>45448131

>>
>>45448254
Do not launch wpa_supplicant if you use dhcpcd: it has an hook that calls wpa_supplicant automatically and looks for /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf.

You can disable it by adding "nohook wpa_supplicant" in /etc/dhcpcd.conf or using only dhcpcd to connect. Your choice.

>>
>>45448408
Even if it works, you launching dhcpcd spawns another instance of wpa_supplicant, fucking shit up. Either disable the hook or launch dhcpcd only (obviously put an /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file in place before doing that).
>>

the conf came blank, just had to add a network entry and it was good to go
>>
>>45448471

they don't, they simply probe for connected stations (aka, get a list of MACs currently connected to the router), then kick one off and fake their MAC to appear as the station they kicked off

then the router will accept that station

When I log in, it says 'Failed to start session', I assume this is because it's looking for a WM and hasn't found an available session?

To learn something about the inner workings of Linux, it's hard to avoid picking up something in the process. It's educational and interesting. I don't know if I'm gonna stick with Arch long-term, but I finally get why like 60% of /g/ is in love with it, it's beautiful in it's own way, it really is.
>>

It means exactly that. It's hard and boring and you have to do everything that could be easily automated by an install script because fuck you

So is the minimal installation of any other distro, except they supply an installer so you can get it done in 10 minutes avoiding any error from the user.

That's the most ridiculous argument ever. You don't learn shit about how things work. At most you learn the name of a command used in the process that you read on a wiki.
Go ahead and explain us how the filesystem is implemented, or any other part of the OS you can think off and let us be the judges of what you learn or not.

nah. Nothing to do with arch itself. This is a display manager issue. Having been on arch for about 2 months. It has yet to break on me or anything harmful yet.

I'd like to just switch to slim or something. But not sure how to switch either. I knew how on debian based stuff though
>>
>>45451551
Oh fuck off asshole. You're just gonna shit on anyone's achievements no matter how great or small.

But I did learn a lot despite you just wanting to shit on what I or others have learned by using Arch, the process of building the system up from virtually nothing for example.
I've been using Linux since 1999 (Redhat 6.0, then later Ubuntu) and never bothered to get into it to learn how everything was put together. I've had a good close look at many conf files, and the methods used to start and stop services, that kind of thing.

Anyway, recompiling everything was troublesome, so I've just set with Arch.

holy shit, I love not having a graphical installer, its not even that difficult, its not like there is some maze of commands you have to fill out perfectly or everything breaks, all you have to do is partition the disk, which is easy and gives you many many choices, then you format them, again easy and customizable, and then you install the system, its not that fucking hard, everything after that is pretty much fine tuning it, giving you a command line gives you so many choices to make the install yours and no bigger than it needs to be. I dont get why you guys shit on the arch installer that much, its nice if you take the five minutes to learn how it works, or have used a distro for a while and know the basics anyway.

My complain is that the ability for MTP should be included in the distro by default. The point isn't that it's hard or that I can't. It's that I shouldn't have to install a package. It's like if Windows made you install a program so that you can read and burn CDs

Distros are probably not allowed for legal reasons to distribute that by default without paying some sort of fee. It's not really surprising considering the name is MICROSOFT Transfer Protocol.

There's a lot of shit Windows doesn't have built-in by default and it's much more annoying to fix than simply installing one package.
