Looking to purchase a thinkpad for college. I will be using it for programming, writing papers + general web usage. Which model would have good battery and lightweight that would suit my basic needs? is the x200s my best option?(id rather not spend too much)
>>
>>45398111
I use the x200s (WXGA+) as my everyday laptop in university and yes, it is worth it. The battery life is between 5 and 10 hours with a good 9cell under Windows 7, depending on load. With chrome and 30+ tabs, the cpu jumps between 20 and 80% load, with a lightweight linux distro it should be way better.

Before you buy it, you should test a similar laptop before. For a lot of persons I met, my x200 and my current x200s are way too small.
But if you can get over the small screen, it has a wonderful size, I can fit it everywhere and can use at least a sheet of paper and the laptop at the same time everywhere (most guys with 13,3"+ cant do that).

If you get one, make sure you have a SSD. Also you should get a pair of RAMs with the same specs, as the GPU could cause artifacts if it has to use different sticks (I did not have the issue with my x200 and 3/ 6gb of ram but with my x200s with 6gb).

The bad thing about it is that the screen size is very bad if you are used tohave more. I work with 1 27", 1 24", 1 17" and a laptop screen at home and when I work with the 12,1" of the thinkpad, it feels a little bit uncomfortable. Slpit screen works, but you can hardly see anything when there is a sheet of paper between you and the laptop.

I currently think about getting a secondary USB screen for longer worksessions with FullHD at 15,6". Hopefully it will work with a USB3.0-expresscard and a Y-cable. Beside that issue, wonderful laptop.

Guys what should I do, my battery that I got from eBay should've gotten here Wednesday but its not here yet,
Estimated delivery Wednesday, Nov 26, 2014

Should I message ebay and try to get my money back?, this has never happened before to me.
>>
>>45398837
Poke the seller first
Then poke them harder if it persists
Then poke them with the threat of negative feedback if they refuse to help

If they try to fuck you over after that, then poke eBay
>>
>>45398897
I did message the seller yesterday but nothing from them yet, will wait till Monday and if I don't get it then, well the it aint looking good for them
>>
>>45398935
I wouldn't worry too much about it, you'll always get your money back because ebay's Money Back Guarantee is stupidly skewed to support the customer.

On multiple occasions I've received something that was DOA, and when you submit a ticket, if the seller doesn't contact you within a time frame you get your money back, no questions asked, without even having to send back the faulty product. If some problem isn't resolved in a timely manner? Money back. Got scammed? Money back. It's actually kind of crazy. I've even gotten money back despite sellers listing their "rules" in the auction, because ebay literally gives no fucks about them.
>>
>>45398976
alright, but I really hope I get the battery on Monday because I need one, but If I dont, will have to contact ebay.

Yeah, at least you got a better deal than I did on the X60s. It's got the same specs except mine had a slightly bigger HDD and it came with an aftermarket battery.

I get something like 6 hours with Lunix with tlp installed, more like 7 if I disable the radio switch.

It's pretty nice! It was my first Thinkpad and although I just bought my second one the other day I still love my X60s a lot, hope you like it too.

Pic related, back when I was trying out the newest version of Ubuntu for fun, though I use Slackware now.

>I get something like 6 hours with Lunix with tlp installed, more like 7 if I disable the radio switch.
Oh, by the way it doesn't get exactly that since once it gets below 20 it sometimes jumps down to 5 so effectively it gets maybe an hour less.

I'm really exited, I'm using a T61 right now but I felt I needed I bit more power, also I wanted a smaller laptop, this is 15,6"

Best of all is that is just a bit damaged in the bottom, usually I just see really damaged thinkpads for sale but this seems to be OK.

I know it's not completely Thinkpad related, but my office just started throwing out a bunch of "old" laptops, and I managed to pick up a couple of Latitude E6500s in very good condition. Now, years ago I bought a T500 (which I still use), but the E6500 was a very close second choice at the time. I almost wish I had bought it now; the fucking thing is built like a tank, the overall quality of construction is noticeably better than the T500. Everything still feels tight and new after years of office abuse. If it didn't have a shitty 1280x800 screen, I'd actually probably switch to the Latitude as my main laptop.

I was genuinely surprised, because my memories of Dell Latitudes were made up of shit computers like the D600, which was part of the reason why I opted for the devil I knew. Funnily enough, apparently now Dell is the only one continuing in the old IBM tradition, Lenovo having gone the Apple route (I have a work-issued T440 and I hate it).
>>
>>45402477
A version of this with modern hardware and a higher res screen would be my dream laptop.

Current Latitudes (not to mention Precisions) should excell in build quality. Pic related is what sits right behind the display of E6440, magnesium frame. Same should be for the E7440.

However battery life isn't as great.
With a 9 cell you can only expect about 5-6 hours of worktime for E6440 and 10 hours of idle.
The biggest battery option for E7440 is 45Whr and even though the machine is more power efficient it will only guarantee around 6-7 hours of worktime with 13 hours of idle time.
For comparison sake a T440s/T440 kitted with the biggest external battery can give 12-13 hours of worktime and around 25hours of idle. X240 is also very similar.

Any of them with a proper rollcage and a latch.

Although I don't think there is any ThinkPad with the level of toughness as Panasonic Toughbooks. Dell also has their "Rugged" Latitudes.

Internal battery making First Gen Carbon only last 3 to 4 hours of worktime. Second Gen is at least better with 6 hours. You can get any Thinkpad with that and even up to two times more.

W series. They are basically the Thinkpad equivalent of tanks.

x201, I believe that the x200's have shittier battery life because of the less efficient core2 duos in them.

It is reported that it has 8-6 h battery according to Linus.
>>

Of course it'll get that idling.
Scroll down to the Battery Life section in these reviews:

They get their laptops new if you're wondering.
If you want a Carbon, I suggest to stay away from First Gen, unless you are ready to be plugged most of the time.

i'm thinking about getting a new T540p from newegg (4gb ram, 500gb hdd,1920x1080, windows 7 prof.)
i'll probably get a 1tb hdd, and a blu-ray drive for it as well.
the only problems i have with it is the non-centred keyboard/track pad, as it's not ten keyless,
and the fact that it has a 'clickpad' opposed to a trackpad and dedicated mouse buttons.
also, one of the many reasons i'm thinking about this model is the 1080p display.
i'll plan on watching many movies and anime on it so i want it to be visually pleasing.

They make the driveshaft for F1 cars out of carbon fiber.
>>
>>45406251
the workstations have 1080p screens
>>
>>45406167
Shatters at a lot higher stress and is very lightweight.

Though you have to be very careful about designing a frame out of carbon fiber as it is great in un-axial tension, but shit in any other direction. You fix this by making a weave of carbon fiber in multiple directions, but you still have to be very careful in parts like the edges where your stress could propagate in a lot of difference directions.

then why are you buying a brand new ThinkPad?

The whole point is to buy them secondhand for cheap because they are a very good value.

Literally no point in buying a new ThinkPad as opposed to anything else on the market.

So here I am, on a T61 that has served me well, but ultimately the performance and battery life is lackluster.

I could get a $225 T420(s), description is a little unclear) with a 2nd gen i5, and put an SSD in it to take advantage of SATAIII.

It'd be almost the same machine, just with a couple of generations newer CPU and motherboard. Would this upgrade be worth it, or would the difference be too insignificant for the price?
