The FDA is banning all handheld lasers over 5 milliwatts.

http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFRSearch.cfm?FR=1040.10

http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFRSearch.cfm?FR=1040.11

You will not be able to purchase a high powered laser >5mW after December 31 except the used stuff that is already here.

LPF is a good place to start if you wanna buy a good quality laser at a decent price before the ban takes effect. Wicked Lasers is a decent company and I personally own a couple of them and they are reliable and well constructed.

CNI has already stopped shipping handhelds into the US in light of this new FDA regulation.
>>
>>45279474
What do you need such a laser for except to disrupt air traffic?
>>
>>45279492
In order to easily violate the Geneva Conventions.
>>
Good. I'm glad they're looking out for my safety.
>>
Disappointing that they're being banned but I've never really seen the need for a $200 laser and I don't think their imminent demise is enough to make me want to buy one.

>tfw your children/grandchildren will never get to experience the freedom of owning such a device

I dont have a need for 5Ghz processor but I have the freedom to unrestrictedly own a 5Ghz processor. If the government bans them then I will never have the option of owning one ever which destroys freedom and increases tyranny.
>>
And the sale of 5mW or greater lasers has drastically increased for overseas sellers who ship to the US.

All this ban does is hurt the people based in the US selling them.

>thanks, obama
>>
>>45279620
5GHz processors aren't a danger to you and everyone within a few miles of you.
>>

>>
>>45279613
You probably can't own them in yurope either

If I got to make the decision I'd keep them legal because it's not like planes are crashing as a result of lasers, but this is very far down on the long list of issues in the United States.
>>
>>45279474
The fuck does the FDA have to do with regulating lasers?
>>
>>45279680

Within 24 months the EU will be banning lasers over 5mw.

Australia and New Zealand has already banned them and treats lasers as weapons on the same level as firearms.

Go away viral marketer.
>>
Banning lasers based on output power is foolish.

A very divergent laser beam will actually be worse than a spotlight. The power is spread out over a larger area depending on the distance.

So really they should regulate lasers based on optical divergence and output power. An airplane pilot isn't even going to be able to see a high powered laser if it is very divergent.

>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on May 5 2014 will announce its intent to limit laser pointers and handheld lasers to be below 5 milliwatts. If adopted, this action would impose a defacto ban in the U.S. on the sale to consumers of portable, battery powered lasers of 5 mW or more. Currently, such lasers are available for sale in the U.S. at powers of up to 3 watts (3000 milliwatts) which is 600 times the proposed FDA limit.
>The proposal would not make it illegal to own or responsibly use portable, battery-powered lasers of 5 mW or more. However, manufacturers could not make or sell these into general commerce in the U.S.

The light from the laser spreads out and is actually pretty wide by the time it hits that altitude retard. It covers a fairly large area and it can easily blind a pilot.

Let me guess, you're European.
Here in the US the way the Government is supposed to work is that the federal government defends the nation as a whole and helps solve conflicts between states.
Most of the power of the law was grated to the state governments and their citizens. Over the past 100 years however there has been an intentional push to weaken state governments and strengthen the federal government as much as possible. Just look at the recent pushes to get rid of the electoral college.

They're very focused, but they do spread over a distance.
1w lasers are powerful enough to burn wood and make you permanently blind. They can easily be had for $200, so you're an idiot if you think something like that wouldn't easily make piloting difficult.

Meanwhile in Europe.

http://www.laserpointersafety.com/news/news/other-news_files/tag-european-union.php

>On February 5 2014, the European Union issued a “decision ... on the safety requirements to be met by European standards for consumer laser products." The decision will severely restrict or ban European consumer access to Class 3R, 3B and 4 lasers. For lasers emitting visible beams, this would restrict or ban consumer laser products with an output 1 milliwatt or greater.

Americans can legally possess lasers over 1000 times more powerful than Europeans and even in 2015 can still buy lasers that are 5 times more powerful.
