Fuck.

What do you think /g/?

It is off by a a tiny tiny amount and it bugs me up close. Luckily, I will stop giving a shit after a couple hours.

I bought it from this Chinese ebay shop:

http://www.ebay.com/usr/hub8?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

It does look a lot sleeker than before. It had quite a few scuffs from owner.

There is a x230t on craiglist. $350. Everything included. 8 gb RAM, 300 gb 7200 rpm HDD, i5-3320M @ 2.6 Ghz. The guy said he got in for christmas but he barely uses it.

Is it a good deal?
>>
>>43185421
Does it really make a difference in the price? If it did I imagine most people who already have the hardware needed to do so are already scouring auctions for these so they can resell them...

Almost 4 in the morning on this end. Yay for holidays.
One of these days everyone should get together and do ThinkPad dominoes.

I might have to pick up some parts for the X61t before production halts and stock dries up. Especially the battery.
>>
>>43185474

I always bring a friend if I'm doing a craiglist deal that's more than $100.

Worst deal was when I sold a phone to a huge nigger. Good thing I told him to meet me inside a Walmart

What are some monitors I can find for cheap that have DisplayPort (for ThinkPad) and HDMI (Xbox)?

There's a Dell U2412M (24", 1920x1200) for sale on craigslist for $150 that seems like a good deal, but it doesn't have HDMI...

I don't know shite about monitors and I would rather buy one secondhand.

I have posted this before but I'll try again: approx. 5 days ago I bought an -almost- new ThinkPad x200. The BIOS had a supervisor password on it.

I opened the thing up, shortened out the SDA & SCL pins on the EEPROM chip. It skipped me straight to BIOS, without using a password, but options were still greyed out (couldn't edit them). I tried another method (from AllService.ro forum). Basically it involves building a small electrical circuit and hooking the EEPROM to a serial port.

I was able to dump my BIOS binary file but the password was not visible on the designated address. (because my bios is TCPA encrypted).

Now this forum called AllService is offering a service to unlock TCPA encrypted BIOSes. They modify your binary file with the password, and you'll have to cook it back. Because I don't want to spend 40 euros on that shit I want to try to do it myself. It seems quite logical.

I have found the hex address where the password resides. I am thinking about wiping it out and replacing it with 0's, then cooking it back to the BIOS. One of my concerns is the checksum of the binary file, and how the beast is gonna handle it.

Has anyone been through the same situation as me? I'd like some more information about the process because I'll probably end up bricking.
>>
>>43185859
As far as I know, it is fucking useless unless you have a special piece of equipment to bypass the lock. My advice is to buy one then undercut the assholes online offering unlocking services.
>>
Looks okay, but won't it leave sticky shit everywhere(especially around the edges)?

Also, yesterday I scored an X220 on the bay for $187.50 with a second gen i5, 4GB RAM, 320HDD, and Win 7 Pro.

>what are the most popular latitudes?

I'd imagine the 14'' versions.

>what is your favorite?

I love my 6420. It's still awesome, but the orange gumming around the keyboard pan looks questionable (especially on a business notebook, but they did away with this in the 6430 I think).

>my favorite thing about thinkpads are the older style keyboards. are latitude keyboards better?

The keyboards aren't as good as those of really old Thinkpads, but in those days Latitudes had better keyboards than now as well. However nowadays the keyboards of Latitudes are quite a bit better than those of current Thinkpads.
I like about Latitudes that they are built like a tank. The Tri-Metal case is amazing. I've dropped my notebook three times in lectures when letting someone squeeze through. It really only has minimal scratches. It's amazing. Otherwise Latitudes and Thinkpads are specc-wise essentially identical.

(also that are reflections not the scratches in pic, since aluminum is shiny)

>>43185804
>Except quality

are you kidding? Look at spill or drop tests. The Thinkpad will be garbage by the time the Latitude gets a dent.

>price
last I checked they were about the same. Then again, I haven't checked since I bought pic related, so thinks might be different now, but the value for a premium is there.

>looks
Well, Thinkpads aren't fashionable either and look like plastic garbage.

>and pretty much everything
Pretty much everything else is pretty much the same.

Just got my new T410, I love it so far. Bought it on ebay for $270 refurbished. Cosmetically it looks great, there's only one small scratch on it. Just installed Debian and everything works like a charm. The 16:10 screen is nice as fuck, and the 1440x900 res is bad ass, all that vertical space.

I'm trying to refurb a pair of 701c(s) but I can't get any purchase on the keyboard screws which are Torx T1. It's a brand new driver so I'm worried the screw heads might be worn down, are there any solutions or am I totally fucked?
>>
>>43185451
It requires soldering and a i2c programmer, and you need to disassemble the laptop to get at the chip. So it's worth maybe 100 off the price but it's a massive hassle. i would recommend looking for ones with no RAM or a fan error instead.

Mine always get's stuck. Honestlyl, pushing it back in and out didn't help at all when i first put it in there. I had to open up the entire case of the laptop to find out what was going on.

I found out that the 3rd party pen I was using wasn't hitting the switch well enough for to be shot out. The solution was to push against the pen's eraser, from the side with the pen clip on it. Try that if it gets stuck.

I need some help /g/. Im thinking of upgrading the current WXGA screen of my T520 to a FHD one. The problem is in my country there´s only one compatible option, the model B156HW01 V.3, I know the V.4 is the top dog but I cant allow myself be picky.

My main worry is if it will really work without further modifications or cables. Everest says my current screen is N156BGE-L11 and panelook.com says:
>Signal Interface : LVDS (1 ch, 6-bit)
And for the B156HW01 V.3 I can get it says
>Signal Interface : LVDS (2 ch, 6-bit)
The channel thing is what worries me, as ive read some machines need a different cable to work.

Ive read other people upgrading to this display from 1366x768 ones like Elitebooks but they dont mention a cable either.

According to this https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Upgrading+the+Lenovo+ThinkPad+T520+Display/9763
>Any T520 will work with this upgrade. Even the most basic configurations can take advantage of a top of the line display. The Thinkpad T510, W510, T520, W520, T530 and W530 will all also work for this upgrade.
It says any model will work. Will it?
>>
>>43190901
by WXGA do you mean HD or HD+

I know that going from a 1366x768 to 1600x900 or 1920x1080 you need to upgrade the cable, same goes for T420 when swapping from 1366x768 to 1600x900.

But I'm unsure about 1600x900 swapping to a 1920x1080

>>
>>43191166
For 500 bucks in a used thinkpad, that's what you should be getting.

I paid 450 for my x220t with an ssd already in stalled and an i5. Only upgrade I ever did was adding in an msata ssd
>>
>>43191201
what SSD's do you have and which do you use as your boot drive?

Do you notice the speed difference of the mSATA being limited to SATA2?
>>
>>43191201
Yeah, that was my point since the i7 is barely any better than the i5's. I personally prefer an HDD for mass storage and an mSata SSD as a boot drive, but it's all just preference.
>>
>>43191246
I don't really notice any speed differences.

And I use both as boot drives. The msata has win8 installed, and the normal drive has a revolving door of linux distros. Still haven't found a good touchscreen one. Most of the time, I feel like linux boots faster, but I dont' think it's that noticable. It could be due to the drive or the OS, honestly.
>>
>>43191275
I use a desktop for mass storage, personally. My laptop is used for online tutoring sessions, typing lab reports and the like, fucking with linux, and web browsing on the shitter. It's all in how you use it.

I think I´ll take the risk anyway, what could go wrong?

I was gonna flash my x60 with coreboot (libreboot) and had set bucts, but then I went to jack off and when I came back the computer went to sleep (fucking kde) and simply wouldn't boot to anything (no thinkpad screen).
I nearly shit myself because I just bought it and felt so fucking stupid.
In an act of desperation, I pried the keyboard out, unplugged the cmos battery waited like 10 seconds or some shit, put everything back together and it worked fine, just had to set the date in the bios and fix the filesystem. I just had to reset bucts, which is a register.

Touchpad sucks because of the lack of dedicated buttons fuck up the trackpoint.

Chicshit keyboards suck because of the wasted surface area between the keys and the lack of tactile feeling on the keycaps telling you where your fingers are on them. The thinkpad keyboard is better than any other chiclet keyboard I've seen. But the best form of a shitty thing is still a shitty thing.

The new keyboard and trackpads are straight downgrades, stop defending shit.

RAM usage does not affect battery life, it is constantly sucking power whether you're using 200mb or all 6gb. Although there is low-voltage RAM which can help (albeit insignificant).

On every Linux install I've done, even in VM's, they have always been at 2-5% CPU at idle. I don't know why, it just does. But that can definitely be sucking up power.

Also install TLP, if you insist on using Linux.

The presumed issue is that the tablet batteries have different cell arrangements because of the hinge. In the X200/1 generation, the voltage was also different (not that it matters since the machine supports both ~14.4v and ~10.8v) because 4/8 cell arrangement on the tablet vs 3/6/9 on the normal.

Recently begun expanding my stable... from right to left:

X200 (pictured in its dock) has been my primary laptop since 2009. I've put a Boe-Hydis IPS screen, a 120GB SSD, and 8GB of memory in it.

X41 Tablet I got at an amateur radio swap meet from some guy who was giving it away as it had a BIOS password. Shorted the appropriate pins on the mobo and got it running Debian acceptably. Needs some work to be fully usable though. Nicely enough it came with a battery that actually works, plus a slice battery that also holds a charge.

W520 my roommate just gave me because it has a cracked screen and is missing memory, a hard drive, and a battery. Might invest in getting it working in the near future.

>tfw want something newer than my T60p but using that sweet UXGA IPS panel has spoiled me.
Skimming Thinkwiki, it appears that newer models don't have a screen that can beat the one I currently have, is this correct?

I do a lot of photo editing, so having a good resolution and accurate color is important to me. IIRC, they don't even offer any IPS options in the W series (a fucking graphics workstation replacement, no less)

I know there's a lot of options for WUXGA screens, but do they have the wide viewing angles & color accuracy I've become used to? I love being able to tilt the screen all the way back & still read text.

I have an SSD in here, so it's fairly snappy, but unfortunately the mobo is limited to 3GB. It's enough for me now due to running Linux, but I know that fairly soon it's gonna be a huge limitation.
tl;dr, are there any cheapish Thinkpads with better screen options than the T60p or should I just be happy with what I have?
>>
>>43198544
The 1920x1080 panel in the W510/520/530 and WUXGA panel in the W701/ds have somewhat wider viewing angles than the typical TN panel they tape on. The W also has a colour calibrator option. And the panels are rgbled backlit high gamut, though there are complaints of being too saturated because of that, though some love it.

>>43198427
>you probably just tighten the visible screws? Although they might just hold the cover and there's a second pair behind the cover at the steel hinges.
The screws on the case (along the back and on the bottom) hold the actual hinge. There are also four to six screws holding the hinge to the lid; all but two of those are usally internal to the lid, the other two do double duty through the bezel and are covered with adhesive plastic caps.
The hardware reference manual will show you all of them.

I duspute the TN in the W701ds is wide viewing angle. Sitting in front of it, both sides are noticeably shifted.
The saturation is intentional; you get get to NTSC gamut without insane saturation. The weridness is the color sources are pure, so instead of color fringes being soft, you get a very sharp red edge, a very sharp green edge and a very sharp blue edge. That takes some getting used to.

>theyre really expensive considering their age and colour accuracy, but ill probably grab one when the glue leaking finally gets too much for me
There are also chinese outfits selling those screens with the glass and glue pre-removed. Avoid them. They also destroy the polarizer in the process, so they slap a cheap one on with crappy color shift properties.
[the most expensive piece of an LCD... is not the LCD. It's the polarizer]

In theory I suppose, I'm not sure how you'd do it though. possibly after getting hte front glass off, soaking it in ethanol to remove the rest of the glue, then carefully polishing it up and reattaching it...

The glue never goes runny, it gets just liquid enough to creep out slowly... over years...

Yeah. It takes four years for the glue to move enough to start causing trouble.
>id be heating the glass panel, not the fucking circuit board
Yeah, OK, you know what? Try it. Go forth and melt the entire fucking thing. You wanted advice from someone who's actually pulled these screens apart, I gave it, it you don't like it, do it your way. See how it goes.

Here's a hint if you're still listening: The glass is tough. The LCD panel itself is tough. The circuitboard is tough. The metal frame under the glass that ties it all together is tough.

The plastic _inside_ that makes up the waveguide, diffuser, prisms and recycling polarizer is not. The heat-pressed ribbons that attach the LCD to the circuitboard are also fragile.

And that adhesive is a fucking nightmare that gets all over everything like pine tar (come to think of it, it smells like pine tar too) and the chemicals that will actually get it off will also completely fuck the innards of the screen. And you won't notice until you turn it on and the backlight is full of giant bright blotches.

Here's some of what you're in for:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOg6AShKWqcAt8X6KDqFhvQ
this guy spent *days* getting all the glue off. Notice that there's no final video of a working panel minus the glass after all that work.
>>
>>43185859
congrats on getting that far - unfortunately maybe dead end... I've heard "crap?" about placing in very deep freez will reset car stereo codes... dunno if true but maybe if so it might work on laptop??? i think it required a real DEEP freez - 20 or lower for some time. If of course it is not just shit drivel...

this is what i wanted to know.

clearly heat, even assuming the innards wouldnt be damaged by it, wouldnt be enough to do the job in a reasonable amount of time.

>>
>>43202660
No.
>>
>>43202063
My guess as to how the chinese place reclaiming these screens is doing it: They pull the frame off and take the bonded-on LCD and circuit board with it. This leaves behind all the innards.
They drop the glass/frame/LCD into a big vat of ethanol until the adhesive dissolves and the parts come apart. Then lots more alcohol rinsing.
Apparently that fucks the polarizer, because all the ones I've seen have a non-stock (crappier) front polarizer.

Considering T400's are almost down to $100 and you can find T420's for under $300, then that would be a good price for a T410.

Ok so a few months back I bought a thinkpad R40 for like $30 but theres no hard drive. I'm broke so I'm just using a flash drive for the storage since I don't need much on there anyway. I was using Xubuntu on it but it ran kind of slow, probably because its USB 1.1 (shit, I know. I plan on buying a cheap pc card usb 2 or 3 adapter eventually) It ran Slitaz great in live mode but when I tried installing it onto a flash drive as a normal install it installed fine but won't boot. I get to GRUB just fine but after that it gives me a bunch of errors. Any suggestions of lightweight distros that might work better? I want to actually be able to install them onto the flash drive rather than use a live USB so my shit stays there, and Live USB with persistence just doesn't do it for me. I know I can buy a cheap new IDE drive on ebay for like $20 but I'm seriously broke and I already have a bunch of flash drives lying around anyway.

I have no idea and I don't have another pen to test or another device to test the pen on.

This is what it looked like before they switched the displays.

I mean if I turn the pressure sensitivity off, the pen works perfectly fine, registers and follows properly over the entire screen.

It's just when I try to enable pressure sensitivity in drawing programs where I get this issue.

right, they're different mechanisms in the pen.

I'm looking to pick up a portable for school - something I can haul to classes/clubs/etc when I'm not using my desktop in the dorms.

Ideally, it would run basic engineering programs (CAD and the like), have pen input for taking notes, and a good battery.

Was looking at the Surface Pro 3, but an X201t seems to be what I need for a much better value. Will I regret spending $300-$400 on a secondhand i7 version?

I'd assume the 8GB memory limit isn't in place with a full 3rd Gen i7, not that I'd need more than that. Software/OS installation doesn't scare me - I've partitioned and dual booted Unix systems alongside Windows before.

Any advice for me, /g/? Thanks in advance!
