So you can customize the important parts. If you need a complex audio setup with voxel based echo computation, make it yourself. If you need a really slim physics engine that runs entirely on GPU, make it yourself. If you need the render to be very specific, make it yourself.
This is effectively e what ogre3D does, but the ogre3D rendering engine is the one set thing, all the libs you can make yourself or use others.
Also, its a learning experience.
