why is it easier for me to go below parallel with front squats?
should I be doing front squats instead?

Front squat is a movement focused on the quad which has the added effect of improving posture
It's wonderful
But it is no replacement for the heavy low bar squat
Low bar squat for full development
Add front squat to Target quads specifically
Add stiff legged deadlifts to target hamstrings and lower back

You should do both. As anon said, FS do wonders for your posture and are underrated in terms of upper back development.

thanks anons, I am currently following PHUL's program, and front squats are in the "lower hypertrophy day". I thought I would hate them, "would take forever to learn form etc", but to my surprise form was pretty easy to learn and the stress on my lower back was far less than what I usually get from back squats. The back squats are in the "lower power" day, so I will keep doing both.
