Meditation is one of the most effective ways. It's nothing magic or spiritual; it's just directing your attention to the physical world away from your thoughts and fantasies. Realize that you are not your thoughts, but merely the observer of your thoughts and you can choose to observe or look away. Additionally, accept that our thoughts come and go randomly and we cannot exactly control what random thoughts arise and when.. but we can control whether we hold on to them or simply ignore them.
A simple meditative practice is just taking aside 5-10 minutes of your day to simply close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Count your inhales and exhales up to 10 then begin again at 1 and repeat. You will have random thoughts arise that may interrupt your counting.. that's normal and OK. Just return your attention to counting.
Over time you get better at returning your focus to your breathing and you get better at diverting your attention away from the thoughts. It's impossible to fail. Its just practicing a skill.
