In Australia, we had compulsory sports in public school until recently. Even our gross losers ended up regularly doing exercise from about prep (~6yo) to yr 9 (~16yo) and heavily encouraged to yr we (~17-19). As a result public school kids tended to look fitter than their private school friends.


Now imagine that there is no internet so basically all there is to do is play sports and run around outdoors. Now add in chores. Now reduce processed foods (shit was a treat back then). Since you're looking at soldiers, add in the fact that they were generally slogging around carrying 40lbs of gear and regularly working out or getting chased by pissed off Germans.

Second, a lot of these guy's were farm slaves in Ireland and Canada, meaning they worked for no money, 15hrs a day doing hard manual labor for only food and shelter in all kinds of elements.
