Ok guys, time for my 2nd smolov cycle. When I did it first, it put 20 kg to my squat. Expecting 10-15 this time. Last time it put 5 kg to my deadlift, expecting about the same.

If all i have is all I need (a baahbell) should I bother training calves? I was thinking of doing 10x10 flat calf raises in my power rack with like 2.5pl8 at the end of leg days because Israetel seems to like calf training so much but I really can't be bothered and it never fucking works anyway. I progress in strength, but my calves don't grow because all my progress is from figuring out how to better balance the heavy ass bar while standing on my toes.

Sure. If you're transitioning between bulking and cutting, it's a good idea to do a short month of maintenance, also if you're cutting/bulking fast (1-2lbs a week), it can be a good idea to have periods of maintenance and when bulking follow those periods of maintenance with a very short cut (maybe a month also) in order to take care of the excess fat. This is not a good idea IMO if you bulk and cut sufficiently slow already because it gets you to the same place slower, hence "where you are in your diet.

Also, it's a good idea to program maintenance calories during strength and peaking blocks so your recovery is good and you're not gaining weight while training with low volume or just before a meet, hence where you are in your training.

If you're more advanced you'd probably spend more time on maintenance because strength training is likely more beneficial for you than building muscle, since you gain muscle quite slowly and you want to build efficiency to lift more weight and maintain technique to avoid injuries.

Finally, you probably shouldn't be breaking up your deficits with periods of maintenance if you're 25% bodyfat, because that also gets you to the same end goal slower and you can afford to cut a bit faster. On the other hand, you might want to program maintenance and even small surplus phases regularly if you're cutting while relatively lean already in order to better recover and maintain muscle (see israetel's article "lessons from recent fat loss" or something like that).

Ausfag here, most typical commercial gyms are around 15 buck an hour minimum, with big chains costing way more sometimes. I live in a poorer area (houses only cost about a million buck here instead of 2-3, Sydney lmfao what can u do), and there's a dank pit near me for 30 buck a month where you get to just be in a big room packed full of machines and free weights, basically the perfect gym.

Thanks for the info but I knew this. What I was referring to was the maintenance periods suggested by mike israetel in his volume landmarks article, wherein he suggests training at MV for 2-3 months of the year and eating at maintenance during those periods. I just wondered because he sort of just casually mentions this and I haven't seen any more content from JTS or anything regarding this issue.

I saw the programming from beginner to advanced video by CWS in which he plans 6 month block examples for beg, int and adv, and none of them contain these maintenance at MV periods brought up by mike in the landmarks article.

Sounds like an extended period where you give all your non-muscular wear and tear time to heal while doing your best to prevent detraining. Chapter 5 part 4 of Scientific Principles explains this kind of fatigue but the book only recommends 1-3 week active rest blocks, so I'm not sure why you'd train at MV for 2-3 months. Maybe you're expected to run through several macrocycles per year (you peak for 4 meets, 3 weeks active rest each time, total time spent in an active rest block 3 months)? If it was just a casual mention maybe you didn't interpret it correctly.

Considering your suggestion of 1-3 weeks per year to heal up, the only reason I can think of for a suggestion of 2-3 months is because the article was about hypertrophy and mentioned bodybuilding a number of times. Perhaps he suggests 2-3 months active recovery if one does hypertrophy blocks exclusively without any strength or peaking.

Yeah "every several months", so you train for hypertrophy for 4-5 months then maintain for a month. Sounds reasonable but definitely a bodybuilding application.
