How do I build my legs using a barbell or set of dumbbells without doing (at least ordinary) squats or deads? I've had some spinal problems before as a kid and I don't want to bring that shit back.

lunges
stiff legged deads
calf raises
hip thrusts
pistol squats
is there a reason you dont want to squat?

late response here, sorry, but I'm somewhat sure that I'm too autistic to do squats/deads properly without fucking up my spine again.
your spine will be fine and you're being a pussy, but if actually refuse then just do front squats. Even when you fail a rep you can just leap backwards and drop the weight like a failed clean and your back stays neutral the whole time.
Deadlifts will actually help your back problems if you do them correctly they do wonders for your spinal erectors and posture. Start light and listen to your body.
