Are the calories per hour estimates on these things reliable? When I break a moderate sweat using them it tells me I I'm clocking in at around 700-800 calories per hour and I don't even feel like I'm exerting that much. For comparison I'd have to bust my ass for an hour straight to get anywhere close to that range on a treadmill. What gives?

> 700-800 calories per hour

Yeah, that's bullshit. Almost all machines will lie to you, but it makes people "feel good" or something. Many often account for BMR on top of physical activity.

imo go to a TDEE calculator and see how much your caloric needs increase when you do an hour of hard-ish activity.
>>
You burn between 5 - 10 kcal / min while doing low to high steady state cardio.
10kcal/min is for guys well trained, 5kcal/min is for the typical guy just starting.

So rather than shooting for a specific calorie per hour range on the machine, I should be looking for kcals burned over a period of time while sustaining a heart rate of a certain bpm?

Calories doesn't matter.
>>
don't look at calories, look at METS and gauge your effort on that
>>
Depends what your resistance/incline is at. If it's all boosted i absolutely believe you can burn 800cal per hour
>>
>>42748778
Neither does grammar.

Reading about it right now, I feel like punching METS/hour into MFP would give me a better estimate than some vague exercise machine algorithm, thanks

>>42748792
I usually set the arc trainer's incline to 7, if that means anything

They aren't reliable.
You should be going based off your top heart rate and your sustained heart rate.
If you're pushing 150-160 BPS for an hour you're burning over 500 calories. While at 140 you'd be burning more like 200-300.
Anything over 160 is intense cardio all the way up to 180. Keeping 180 for an hour long would be incredibly hard. That's where you'd be burning towards 1k per hour.
None of this counts in calories for repair.
I can sprint on a treadmill for almost 4 minutes none stop and it is most definitely overshooting my calories burned.
