eat as little carbs as possible. aim for 50 carbs, whatever protein you need, and sub 30 grams of fat.

drink only water. Do intermittent fasting so your first meal is as late as possible.

Also do HIIT cardio to further increase deficit.

you can only do this for about 2-3 weeks before breaking down, so when you do decide to cheat, keep it under 2k calories.

I recommend intermittent fasting to everyone here. I do 3 1 day fasts per week, eat anything I want on normal days but try to keep it under daily calorie expenditure. Also, I exercise most days for around 500 kcal burn(running or bike). I lose around half a kg after every fast this way.

Lifting weights on a major deficit (I don't count, somewhere between 800-1200kcal) feels kinda pointless. I'm making gains but I imagine these are just "noob gains" and I'll plateau quickly. I'm thinking of just dropping my lifting routine once I plateau, using BCAA to maintain that muscle, and cardio/diet my way to my target weight. I can always build muscle later. Thoughts on this?

I've eaten close to 20k calories before, if not even more than that. I've never been clinically obese, but I've been up there. Anecdotally, I've tried to lose weight under 205 pounds several times and always failed and relapsed. This time I stopped drinking diet coke. The results being that, not only am I making it to sub 205 effortlessly, but I haven't had cravings for sugar, my willpower has felt in top form (previously I had a hard time getting out of bed, studying, workout out etc when losing weight), and I'm pretty sure I'm losing more fat in my gut and man boobs than I was previously. So I ask her to list off everything she's eaten that day. Here's what I learned:

1. She "forgets" that she ate some foods, then doesn't count their calories until I add it up for her
2. She continues to drink soda
3. She continues to eat snacks and chocolates (oh 10 crackers topped with jelly and cream cheese is just a snack I don't count those - no ffs that's a goddamn meal in itself)
4. She doesn't count her calories right - she overestimates how much she burns, and underestimates how much she eats
5. She thought her calorie maintenance was what she needed to lose weight
6. She ate over her calorie maintenance anyways, but convinced herself it was okay because of exercise
7. She dramatically over-estimates how much she burns from working and walking around (sorry no, you have not burned 3000 calories in a 6 hour shift working at a supermarket, I don't care what your fitbit says)

She tells me she sticks to her diet - "1400 calories per day or less, no matter what!"; I ask her if she's gained or lost weight this week: "Oh, I put on a pound". I grit my teeth and tell her that it is impossible for her to put on a pound of fat in a week if she is eating at or below her daily calorie limit.

No end to excuses. She's 28, she'll be 29 soon. If she doesn't wake the fuck up she's going to be 35 and wondering what the fuck happened to her life that she has no boyfriend, no husband, no children, and I just don't know how to help someone who refuses to help themselves like this.

So all I can tell you, buddy, is stop making fucking excuses and start getting autistic about your calories in and out.

I noticed that jog/running like this makes me not get winded as fast during cardio.

Also standing up straight with head in the air and shoulders back lets more air in and push out gut to really breath in that air.

I started with low speeds when I started C25K. 3 mph for walk/jog and 4-5 mph. My legs are no longer in pain at all during or after run, or even the day after. I started running only when I hit an overweight BMI. Before that all cardio I did was extremely light, and I stayed on week three of C25K for a while because I didn't want to rush the program and burn out my legs.

I have been in skinnyfat hell for 2 years now with no escape.
The past 2 weeks I've fallen out of depression (which has happened before) but this time I think I know how to stay out of it.

The study that report came from is unfortunately the only one I've ever seen on anything related to that. You can go read it, but the tldr is that extreme weight loss causes extreme TDEE damage, which repairs itself somewhat over years.

I've never seen any studies that say that milder weight loss or long term dieting causes TDEE damage, it just seems to be unstudied.

I'll share my experience. I did some stupid shit when I was younger and went on 500kcal a day diets. I lost a lot of weight because of the severe deficit however I did balloon back to double the weight I was before I started doing stupid shit. Now I'm on IF, on 1500 - 1600kcal a day and it does not even feel like being on a diet. I've lost 15kg in a couple of months. Not even for a day I've felt like I've starved myself.

I'm worried that not keeping my diet consistent throughout the week might be having an effect on me. Yes I recalculated my TDEE as I lost weight, I am consistently eating at the correct amount and eating the same exact foods each work day.

But it's certainly easier to be consistent every day, with one cheat meal on the weekend if you need it.

It's either a little under or a little over, depending on the day, but yeah. I keep autistic track over everything I eat so I stop myself before I even get near something like 500 calories over. Most restaurants have nutritional information posted online so it's not like eating out hinders my progress much.

Dude if you're losing at a rate of 7500 calories a week, 30,000 a month, then you're right on track. A pound of fat is approximately 3,500 calories, so that's about 8.5 pounds a month. You probably just lost a bit of extra water weight for the first month. Trust me, as long as you keep it up by the third month you'll lose the same amount, and consistently lose that amount for each future month.

Lost another 2kg in the last two weeks- and managed to swim a block of front crawl for 20 minutes this morning, and finally managed to break my 30 minute 5k wall again yesterday (ran it in 24 minutes at my peak, so getting under 30 again is almost a relief) - feels pretty blooming awesome!

Last time I checked there is mostly a linear relationship between visceral fat and total body fat (also mediated by genetics), so insofar as people reach healthy bf% in the end, visceral fat will not typically be a concern. It will always go away to a good extent with weight loss, but there is some variation in the amount of visceral vs. subcutaneous depending on exercise and diet.

If your form is right and you remember to stretch and you're not clinically obese, then you need to go lighter and gradually work your way up to heavier weights. Not sure what a good progression is, but even being fat I'm only doing 100lbs. If your body starts buckling under the pressure and you can't even do a set of 5, you need to go lighter.

Also, make sure you're properly fueling your body for lifting. You can cardio fasted, but lifting heavy shit fasting sounds like a recipe for disaster. If you're still injuring yourself playing it safe and following all the right protocols then you need to see a doctor.

Go for more walks dude (1hr min) and get yourself some cheapo dumbells and google for decent exercises - my nooby lifting sessions go on for just over an hour and I started doing them twice a week - I now do them every other day because as knackering as they are, I really enjoy them, have started to see results (6 months in) plus I feel 10x better. you need to think long term or you will likely get nowhere. Make weight loss easy, not hard for yourself. 10 day fasts are the hard way, if you have the iron willpower for it then fine, torture yourself to get thin a tiny bit faster if you want to. You'll always be hungry and your life will suck.

Losing weight is the easy part though because for most people, it's a short term 4-6 month journey. Keeping it off is hella hard.

Like it or not, you need to learn skills AT SOME POINT. The sooner the better, you need to commit to changing your diet in a very serious long term way. Learn to calorie count obsessively every day and adhere to your limit rigidly. If you learn how to portion your meals responsibly, you will lose weight and rarely feel hunger. You're going to walk into some school cafeteria that serves endless pizza and omelettes everyday, and you wont survive it unless you learn how to eat properly. Your classmates will load all kinds of shit on their plate and ask you why you don't eat more.

And you can't rely on motivation. Motivation is for the weak (want to be thin/want gf/want muscle/want to be healthy etc.). What you need is DISCIPLINE. Pure discipline.

Ask yourself what you need in your current situation. Are you trying to lose weight by eating well below maintenance, then potatoes are probably not the best food.
Are you extremely poor and just trying to get something to eat, then by all means eat potatoes while keeping under maintenance.

If you like potatoes, you can substitute with sweet potatoes for more protein.

Cut without lifting and you will get weaker, moving the goalposts of your desired body further and further towards Auschwitz. Lifting allows you to hold gained muscle static while you "cut" to it.

Bulk without lifting and you get what many ITT have - a shitty fat body with no actual strength to go with it.

Lifting (or minimal resistance training of any kind) will always be a necessary component of having a healthy, good looking body. Never remove it completely from your routing.
