Is the bar supposed to touch your chest?
>>
>>42735782
Yes dumbass
>>
>>42735782
Yes. But dont bounce it off your chest, and dont rest it.
>>
>>42735782
Yes you fucking retarded jew?

>"is it okay to be a pussy a do half a lift?"
the post
>>
No, it's okay to go an inch or two above your chest. Remember, it's not about the ROM, it's about the weight. The heavier the weight, the more gains because your body has to push more. Full ROM is just for purist elitist egolifters
>>
>>42735782
No. Do what feels comfy for you. Don't listen to all the dyels here.
>>
>>42735879

Full ROM is for those faggots who want to "progress"
>>
>>42735782
while I touch my chest i wonder about muh "ellbows parallel" topic since i appereantly go below parallel with touching.
>>
>>42735799
Resting is fine but bouncing isn't.

don't listen to these people, if you want to powerlift, then yes, but if you want to be lifting in your 40s go to parallel
>>
When did you all shitheads become powerlifters?

Only fat powerlifters care if the barbel touch the chest.

If you want to keep your muscles under tension (which is the best thing for aesthetics) you should stop the bar few CMs before it touch your chest.
>>
No, go a bit past perpendicular and you're good. Torn rotators await you if you go to your chest, especially if you don't maintain 70-80 degrees of angle between your arms and chest.
>>
>>42736141
powerlifting is the purest sport
>>
ITT we pretend like we can only do one of the things mentioned here instead of all of them.
>>
>>42736109

Yeah, I hate those idiots. They keep increasing their weight every few sessions, some of them almost every week. Stupid fucks, aren't they?
>>
>>42736141
Why would you want to keep your muscles under tension the whole time? Are you actually believing the meme it would somehow increase the muscle growth? topkek, then you may as well don't do benchpress and only go for machines and do HIT
>>
>>42736141
Spoto press is a legit powerlifting accessory though

I've got nothing against the sport, but if you actually want to look good, you should aim for aesthetics. I've never seen a strong powerlifter looking aesthetic. They are all fat pieces of shit.
>>
>>42736184

Nigga there is a difference between "just lifting the weights" and actually training your muscle
>>
People love Dumbell presses on here, but those can go even deeper than chest level and people say that's a good thing.

But then yal can't make up your minds when it comes to 'bar to chest'?
>>
But does it count if it only touches the headphone wire that's on my chest?
>>
>>42736223

The thing with the dumbell press deeper than the chest level, is that even then, the chest muscles are still contracted.

When you touch the bar on your chest, the muscle contraction stops, and you just rest the bar on your chest.
>>
>>42736240

Powerlifters do Spoto press, which is stopping the bar before it touches your chest. It was first invented by Spoto, a powerlifter...

this is what i think about people that do not touch chest when benching, you are weak minded fuckheads that need to be put in your place, literally the cancer of lifting.
>>
>>42736930
Your bench press will literally increase by like 20-30 kg in a few months if you start doing Spoto press or pauses in bench press in general on some days. It will improve your bench so sickeningly, and that in turn will make you get more chest mass gains since you will be able to do hypertrophy sets like 4x8 at higher weights than before.

Powerlifting is the Paralympics of the strength-sport world. Try Strongman or Weightlifting for the real deal.
>>
>>42737034
It will help you perfect your bench press technique. You might think your technique is already as good as it can be, but it isn't. Doing Spoto once a week in addition to your normal bench press sets on another day, it will help your normal bench press soar to much greater weights because of the stability you learn from spoto press.

No way to stop the bar falling on you, if you struggle with the weight and can't make a rep you could easily lose grip and drop a large amount of weight on your chest or neck. It's why whenever you hear about people dying in a gym, it's nearly always doing bench press.
>>
>>42737625
I don't have pictures of him but my friend is a natty low bodyfat aesthetic powerlifter who competes. Also using steroids does not in any way disqualify any powerlifter from their aesthetics dumbfuck.
>>
>>42736925
The point of paused bench is to maintain tension at the bottom of the movement. Resting it on your chest defeats the purpose.
>>
>>42736755

>>

>>
you touch your chest because its full rom in powerlifting also its a movement you are trying to get stronger at and by touching the chest you can keep some standards.

if youre not trying to get stronger at the movement and just building your chest you can just go half way, it keeps the tension in the pecs. that why you see some bodybuilders not touch their chest.

Some people think they hardcore cause they touch their chest when benching but i bet some of those people dont even have big pecs even if they lift a heavy weight.

its because they focus on the movement. bodybuilders dont touch chest because they focus on the muscle. different goals people. you aint badass because you can bring the bar to your chest.
FYI. i touch my chest when training the benching movement.
>>
Doesn't touching the chest lead to shoulder impingement?

>>
>>42742975
your upper arms should be parralel to your chest.
>>
>>42742975
Your upper arms should make a straight line fro elbow to elbow.

>>42736967
You can take off your battle fedora now, brave warrior
>>
>>42735782

Your pecs initiate at the bottom of the lift but only to a significant extent once your elbows go below parallel. Unless you have extremely odd proportions, not touching your chest is going to result in little to no chest flexion. Likewise, bouncing the rep at the bottom nearly completely skips the entire portion of the lift where you pecs would enter into the lift as you use the momentum to move the weight instead of your pecs. Paused Benching recommended as proper form because it forces you to initiate you pecs, otherwise it's just a glorified triceps/front delt exercise.
>>
>>42736109
Do you genuinely believe that your muscles give a shit about rom?

>>
>>42743454
It is not, it helps you perfect balance and thus technique.
>>
>all these dumbass posts
Pausing at the bottom of the rep slightly below your chest is optimal. It helps keep your form tight and the bar position should reflect the activation of your lats during the movement.
>retract shoulder blades
>slight arch
>heels on floor
>tighten glutes
>activate lats
There you go. Your elbows should naturally tuck into you with proper usage of your lats. The bar will rest slightly below your chest, creating the optimal bar path slightly diagonal back on the way up. A nice one second pause at the bottom will keep you in place as well as build explosive power out of the hole.

I love seeing this at the gym. You see someone start warming up, their form is fine. Then as they progressively load weight their ROM gets smaller and smaller.
>>
lots of manlets in here with short arms. Im tall and dont feel like risking shoulder injury so I stop at 90 degrees. Also bench 315 for 1RM so its not like it hasnt worked for me
>>
>>42736755

>>
If you're a DYEL with a small chest and long arms then you might not be able to comfortably touch your chest without noticing shoulder pain from your arms dropping too low.

The physics of levers are such that the greatest force of exertion on the arm is at 90 degrees to the direction of the force. Once your upper arms hit parallel to the floor you've hit maximum exertion.

Drop the bar about 20 more degrees (the bar will either touch your chest or be about an inch or two away from it). Going past parallel on bench press stretches your chest muscles and really shreds them up.

I have a hard time going much further than parallel due to shoulder issues, but the bar gets close to an inch from my chest so I don't worry about it. I just throw in some DB bench afterwards and call it a day, oddly enough I can go much lower on them than BB press.

I can see why this sort of opinion could arise since a lot of gymbros bench a lot but never do rear delts so they find themselves incredibly imbalanced and incapable of getting out of the bottom of the rep since their upper back is weak as fuck.

It's easier to just convince yourself that you don't need that part of the rep since it hurts your weak shoulders every time and that just can't be good for you so clearly doing less ROM is better.
>>
>>42736141
Do you realize that your muscles remain under tension when you touch your chest? You don't drop 315 lbs on your chest and let it crush you, relaxing under the bar for a second before resuming the lift. You TOUCH your chest, which means the weight of the bar is still being supported by your muscles, not your rib cage.

Pick one, mate. Your bench is effectively 0 right now if you're not going through the full ROM
>>
>>42735782
Usually, sometimes going an inch or so above can be useful. I made my own version of smolov for chest and upper body and utilized paused reps above the chest an inch to help get past plateaus and get to 350 on bench. But typically i would say touching chest is advised.
>>
>>42735782
Don't go below parallel you arms want to make an L if that makes sense, if you are going below parallel you are putting a lot of strain on rotator cuff ect. Which will eventually lead to injury. 90% of the people in here giving "advice" can't even bench past 50kg.
>>
>>42736259
Are you literally benching the bar? The closer to your chest it is the harder you're having to push. Getting it off your chest without bouncing is the hardest part of the lift, if you decided to just take a break and let the bar sit on your chest you'd have blood coming out of your eyes after a few seconds, if you're doing any decent weight

>>
>>42735782
For a non-meme answer, here you go: it depends on your limb length. If you have very short limbs, benching with proper form (elbows at 45° from your shoulder) will bring your elbows down to just below shoulder height when the bar touches your chest. The shoulder is still in a reasonably strong position, so they should touch their chest every rep. If, however, you have very long limbs, benching correctly (again, 45° angle) will have your elbows significantly below your shoulder joint, which is not a very strong position and can cause damage over time (bencher's shoulder). This kind of person should not bring it to their chest every time, and should instead stop when their elbows go slightly below their shoulder, which for most people is 1-2" above the chest (basically a Spoto bench, although pausing is optional and generally for more advanced trainees). Benching this way isn't "cheating" it's adjusting the height of the bar to suit your physiology and prevent injury. You'll still get the same gains that the shorter guy would (since you're doing the same ROM as him), but without risking your shoulder joint.

If we're doing a dick measuring contest, yes, they are, but at least things like straps/knee wraps/squat suits aren't just you stopping halfway through a rep. If you're going to post about how much you lift, it should be a proper, full ROM lift, otherwise you're no better than a half repper saying he squats 450.
>>
>>42746815
Totally, and sumo isn't a real lift. The whole ROM of a bench includes touching the bar to your chest. It's like if you could pin squat 465 but regularly squat 405, then claim you squat 465. That's not how it works, buddy
