Here in Canada it was kind of a mix of both. There were definitely lots of cliques that everybody was kinda aware of, but there was definitely a clique hierarchy of sorts,with the hockey team clique at the top and at the very top was the "alphas" of the hockey team group, who were unarguably the most popular and sought after guys in the school.

I am not going to argue that the guys at the top didn't have good looks, but a lot of the guys on the hockey team weren't particularly good looking, but every girl wanted to be dating a guy on the team because of all of the status and social perks that came along with it. A lot of those guys had the time of their lives in HS and actually peaked at 19 or so, and now work construction and have not so good looking gfs. Jelly and not jelly at the same time, not so sure about that feel.

I guess, but it's a pretty common story around here. Even in bumfuck nowhere like where I was, there is a huge amount of money and opportunity when it comes to hockey and other sports to a lesser degree. Pretty much every highschool team has a dozen or so guys who are serious potential recruits for proffesional leagues and so a lot of guys spend their teenage years simply trying to get recruited out of highschool and neglect pretty much anything that isn't training and partying.

Once they get to senior year they either get smart and start studying and get into uni, or they go absolutely wild and party all of the time. It's not all bad though, some of them end up with decent pay and a house and kids, but their "sexual market value" just tanked after highschool and they end up settling down with a 4-5/10.

We didn't have a "most popular kid," everyone was fairly chill and I'd smoked weed and played vidya/pickup basketball with practically every dude and most chicks in our class by the time I graduated.

I was in med-chem. As prep for pharmacy in college. That class only accepted like 20 students. And was roughly 50/50 male female.
The rest of the classes where nurses, masseuses, caretakers for the elderly etc.
