How should I alter my workout to increase my surfing ability? I know of a lot of surfers who just do yoga but I want to keep lifting. I just moved to a house closer to the beach, so this is my opportunity to quit sucking at surfing.

I'm currently doing PPLPPLx but I will be reducing my workouts to 3x per week and surfing the other 3-4 times per week.

Best non-meme A/B workouts? Best workouts for surfers?

Anybody else looking for advice to help them with their sports?

Surf more. Surfing is almost all about technique rather than strength.

hey man i surf everyday and have done so for 12 years.
best training for surfing is surfing, i swear to god.
even paddling, ive seen guys heavier than me and with muscles half the size of mine snake me and paddle way faster than me. all technique.

That said, last summer i spent roughly an hour and a half a day swimming in the ocean on top of my surfing and that helped considerably.
If any gym exercises help, its pull ups and lat raises, i noticed a difference after lat raises.

Also, get a custom surfboard. Believe me, it makes a HUGE difference. I paddle at least 20% better as of getting a custom board, I got one from channel islands because a friend worked there and i got a discount.
your handling will improve dramatically, paddling feels like gliding and balance improves.

I grew up skimboarding on a beach across from Seattle, but the rides were never as long as I wanted them to be.

I'm gonna be headin to Hawaii and Cali pretty soon and wanted to give surfing a go while i'm there. Is foot placement and balance similar to skimming? Will my skimboarding experience be useful for surfing?

i used to go to a gym where one of the pai brothers worked out at. i noticed him doing mostly upper body workouts that develop and strengthen shoulders, back, and delts. i assume he is doing this to increase his paddle strength when he is out on the water. since paddling is crucial to surfing i'd say start there and see if you notice any differences when you're out on the water.
