went to dentist for first time in maybe 2 years

did xrays and cleanings. no cavities but i brushed too hard. i need fillings to cover the very weak enamel. going next week :(

my teeth are getting a bit crooked and i can get braces if i wanted. should i get them because i know they're very expensive. not sure if my insurance will cover it. thoughts on invisalign?

feels bad man if you're reading this go to the dentist EVERY 6 months - you will regret not doing this

How effective is flossing?
>>
Haven't been in 3 years
>>
>>42711466
very. do that shit. You wont have morning breath anymore if you floss once a night
>>
toothbrush abrasion is real, niggas. you can wreck your teeth and permanently brush away your gums. ask your hygienist how to brush. mine recommended holding your toothbrush between only your thumb and pointer finger to avoid applying too much pressure. the stuff you're supposed to remove from your teeth is super soft. anything else on there, you need a cleaning to get rid of.
>>
>>42710937
btw OP those teeth are likely veneers. most movie stars, celebrities, etc. or just randoms with incredibly perfect teeth had surgery and artificial tooth structure replacement done to get them. healthy teeth usually look significantly more "low key", even if they are whitened
>>
>>42711466
>>42711466
Dentist here, it's very effective at getting rid of interproximal food devris (food stuck between your teeth) that may cause a bad smell and might be fermentef by bacteria on your teeth which will digest it and release acids and other stuff that will cause your teeth to become cavitated or become carious
>>
I have to warn folks every time I hear about tooth health: soda will fuck your teeth. I had perfect teeth when I was younger, used to get mires and compliments all the time on how nice they were. Then in my early twenties I sat at a desk job and drank exactly one can of soda per day. I would just sip on it through my shift. The acid destroyed my enamel on about 10 teeth. When I notice a piece of tooth crumbled off while brushing, I went to the dentist. She told me it's because the acid was on my teeth for hours. She even told me I would have been better off to drink a whole twelve pack and rinse with water than to have one can of soda over eight hours.
Always remember to rinse with water after a soda, and don't sip on it for an extended amount of time. I would even recommend not drinking soda at all. You will save yourself thousands of dollars in enamel repairs and tons of embarrassing moments trying to hide your teeth every time you smile or laugh.
>>
Yellow teeth, wat do? Should I mouthwash and floss regularly. Also what paste should I use
>>
>>42711845
Yes, this.
I also have yellowish teeth, even though I brush and floss regularly. What am I doing wrong?
>>
>>42711792
yeah from what i understand the best thing for your teeth is eating 3 meals per day, no snacks or drinks other than water in between. frequency and length of exposure to foods, especially sugary/acidic ones, is killer
>>
My teeth are crooked, but I'm poor as fuck.
How can I afford braces cheaply?
>>
Do you guy's toungescrape? I think It's kinda beneficial
>>
>>42711845
>>42711862
i'm not sure how to whiten your teeth without consulting a dentist, but make sure you don't brush too hard (especially with whitening toothpastes, which are usually extra abrasive) to try and whiten your teeth. you don't want op's problem in addition

That makes a lot of sense to me now. I wish I had known about the acid when I was younger. Parents, school all told me brush after meals and I would be fine. It's not fucking true. I had so many first dates that were last dates because of my teeth. It was an instant killer for attraction, always trumped everything else the girl was attracted to.

>>42711914
yeah, i wish i was a lot more educated on teeth when i was younger as well after having some cavities and gum issues. but the best we can do is do better going forward. if i'm not crazy, i think that my teeth are looking a bit shinier and whiter after cutting my fruits down to a normal amount, eating a lot more dairy (like 4 servings per day, might be excessive), and eating only 3 times per day.

I haven't been to the dentist in like 4-5 years and brush 1-2 times a day. My teeth are a little yellow I guess but so are everyone's.

My teeth have never hurt / can drink or ear cold foods no issue. Should I make an appointment?
>>
>>42712124
yes, i would go every 6 months for check-ups. you can develop problems that get much worse with time, even if you don't get cavities. if you eat a /fit/ approved diet you might not have any issues, but if you fall out of the habit of going to the dentist you're at risk if you go through a period of life stress and start eating badly or drinking or something (happened to me)

go to the a dental college/university - it's super cheap. you get your xrays cleaning and fillings for sometimes less than half. it's done by a student but an actual dentist supervises

maybe try google your area and low cost dentistry and see if there's some shit that could help

breh seriously get it checked. better to blow your money on the dentist than a new laptop phone or some shit

Regular braces = cheaper and more effective (faster to correct)
>>
>>42712233
Check'd
How much faster? I'll feel righteously goofy with over the teeth braces. Also would I be going to the dentists as often as Invisalign? Basically I'm asking for a quick rundown, bog
>>
>>42712269
I had a roommate do Invisalign so this is what I know:
>they get a mold done of your teeth
>send to invisalign poeple
>send dentist a bunch of trays
>wear each one for a couple weeks
>go to dentist a lot more to see progress
>may not even work 100%
>will say it take x period of months but it might get extended to logner

You're paying a lot more mate and it might not be as effective. I'd just go for the regular braces

Don't forget the importance of flossing in regard to the prevention of gingivitis.
Also people need to be made aware of the correct angle they should be brushing at.
I see too many people brushing flat on their teeth instead of at a 45 degree angle, hitting the gumline correctly.

If you have to drink soda, use a straw.

The straw will transport the soda directly to your tongue most of the time than through your teeth without a straw.

Advice works for fruit juice as well.
>>

Don't use mouthwash.

Gargle and rinse and spit with saltwater instead.

This is what dentists tell you to do after any oral surgery on your teeth or gums.

Make sure to wear retainers after they take your braces off.

Like only around 20 percent of people don't need retainers after taking off their braces while 80 percent do.

You will be surprised on how several years later, people who took off their braces but never bothered to wore their retainers, had their teeth slowly become crooked again.
>>
>>42713894
Read about history of denitstry in America.

It sounds like a scam because according to insurance, your eyes and teeth are separate from your body and it's just cosmetics even though oral health is linked with the body.

Don't buy floss. Most people don't know how to use them properly or don't have the patience.

Buy PLACKERS Dental Flossers Gentle Fine 90 Each (Pack of 12) sold by Pharmapacks.

These are unflavored as well. I find them much easier to use than regular floss which by the way is getting harder to find any floss that is unflavored.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0167K56NM/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=&th=1

I bought 12 packs of floss because it saved me the most money on Amazon.

My teeth are like this dude but gaps between all upper teeth, once had a girl drunk dial me with her friends after a date and say it was perfect but that she couldn't date me cause of my ugly teeth.

I have a gf somehow but I literally cannot even look into the mirror and talk without cringing at myself. It's caused me sever depression and self-esteem issues, saving up for any type of braces because anything is better than this.

Would literally prefer to put on 200lbs overnight than have these teeth.

I'm 28, don't have a few of my teeth already, the rest is black as fuck, I don't have two upper left front teeth, visible if I'd smile too wide. Also, one of my front teeth is a little chipped. And one of my front lower teeth grew out skewed.

I know I'm fucked and probably won't have anything left in 5 or 10 years. I'm scared of visiting a dentist, since last time I was there, he said they'd have to probably pull out a lot of my teeth if I wanted a few of the other ones to survive, and even then it'd be a long fight. And filling so many holes with implants wouldn't be possible, and even so would cost more than my life is worth.

I'm fucked either way and just wanna kill myself once I see my teeth are done for good.

Don't do that. Baking soda can damage your teeth even more than regular toothpaste.

My preferred toothpaste brand is Sensodyne Pronamel

https://www.costco.com/Sensodyne-ProNamel-Gentle-Whitening-Toothpaste-6.5oz-(184.3g)%2C-4-pack.product.100215530.html

I always buy the 4 pack from Costco. It's SLS-free and also sugar free because most toothpaste if you look at the ingredients has sugar listed but this does not.

Best bang for your buck and I really like it is SLS-free because the majority of SLS free toothpaste I consider hippie brands since they also removed the fluoride from their SLS free toothpaste while Sensodyne Pronamel keeps the fluoride.
>>
>>42714190
Reminder to always get a second opinion on dental related issues.

Never completely fully trust your first dentist.

Also, dental medical board for your State is available online.

Make sure you not only google your dentist's name but also look up their dental practice/license history on your state's dental board page to see if anybody ever filed any lawsuit against them or if they violated any practices or laws.

This advice works for any medical professional as well.

I wish my parents had taught me proper dental health. Now, I had a missing back tooth and I'll be spending my life savings on getting a mini dental implant. I'd get a real dental implant, except I cannot afford $10k and I don't have a job with dental insurance (American).

I use an electric toothbrush, use mouthwash, waterpik, and read numerous studies about dental health. Unfortunately, my enamel is weak. I can barely keep up with my dental bills. Every year it costs me ~$550 for cavity removal. They're finally done fixing the cavities, but I still need to take every measure to maintain my smile. I barely even eat sugar anymore. I'm only 24...

It also help cutting since you don't snack so much (every time you eat you have to take the things out and then brush your teeth before putting them on again, so you are way more likely to refuse food)

My teeth used to be hella fuck up. (Picture related)

I got braces and it took about three years but they are perfectly straight now. If you want white teeth you can oil pull with coconut oil. It works wonders. Also floss every morning and after every meal. Ask me anything, I'll lurk the thread for a little while and supply knowledge based on my experiences. It doesn't matter how fucked up your teeth are, if you have the time and money you can get it fixed.

>How much did it cost?
I'm in the United States. It cost me $2500 out of pocket. I had good dental insurance because of my job, so it covered half. It would have cost me $5000 without insurance. I had these later in life (late 20s). I grew up poor so my parents could never afford to get me braces growing up so I had to do it myself.

>Also when you first get them i heard you're gums are fucked and you can't eat solids for 2-3 weeks
It wasn't that bad for me. The first 3 days are wicked painful. I lived off of protein and meal replacement shakes until the pain went away. The only real bad part after that is breaking brackets. You can't really eat a lot of stuff like nuts, granola, etc. You can get away with some of it but you just have to be careful. Wires are painful. You can't really eat meat off of the bone or corn on the cobb, which is pretty shit.

Explain oil pulling
>>
>>42720146
seems like hippie pseudoscience bullshit but I doubt it'll do any harm so I'll give it a try
>>
>>42720159
You swish coconut oil in your mouth for 20-30 minutes. Typically you do this right when you wake up. Floss first if you can, and spit the oil in the trash when you're done since it's not good for your plumbing. Coconut oil contains predominantly medium chain fatty acids of which 45-50 percent are lauric acid. Lauric acid has proven anti inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. The idea is that the fats in the oil bind to the bacteria and clean your shit out. It works well, take pictures before and after you do it and you will definitely see a difference.

>>42720173
It works really well, after a few times you can see the difference. My mom does it which is how I found out about it. She's in her 60s an when she went to the dentist he said her gums look like those of a much younger person.

You don't need twice yearly checkups unless you have chronic oral health issues you fucking morons. Just brush two times a day and stop eating like shit. Also, on flossing:

>The latest dietary guidelines for Americans, issued by the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, quietly dropped any mention of flossing without notice. This week, The Associated Press reported that officials had never researched the effectiveness of regular flossing, as required, before cajoling Americans to do it

>A review of 12 randomized controlled trials published in The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews in 2011 found only “very unreliable” evidence that flossing might reduce plaque after one and three months. Researchers could not find any studies on the effectiveness of flossing combined with brushing for cavity prevention

>...there is some mediocre evidence that flossing does reduce bloody gums and inflammation known as gingivitis. That Cochrane review found that regular brushers and flossers had less gum bleeding than people who only brushed, although the authors cautioned that the quality of the evidence was “very low.”

>Maybe the evidence that flossing reduces tooth decay or gum disease does not hold up because we are all such poor flossers. Superflossers, like the zealous hygienist at your dentist’s office, aim to “hug the neck of the tooth” and get below the gum line, Dr. Hujoel said...A review of six trials found that when professionals flossed the teeth of children on school days for almost two years, they saw a 40 percent reduction in the risk of cavities.

Mouthwash has similarly dubious efficacy.

Dental student here. We actually looked at this in class and a few studies and so far I think the ADA's stance is that it's not going to harm you but there's no good evidence of it doing anything to help you. Especially not more than a normal mouthwash that actually has antiseptics would. If you look at this "before and after" photo, it would have you believe that oil pulling took off the tarter from the patient's teeth and made it look cleaner, but upon closer inspection you can see that the gum tissue next to the teeth got more red and inflamed.

You're very likely not hurting yourself by oil-pulling, but I don't think you're really helping yourself either.
>>
>>42722146
As a dental student, is it actually important to see a dentist every 6 months? I haven't gone for the last year and a half, but I keep up with brushing + flossing.
>>
>>42722102
You do not understand really. He can just put braces and the dentist in America will do the alterations. Expensive part is putting them on the teeth, eventual removal of wisdom teeth and of course if needed procedures on other teeth. After that he can just go once a month to the American dentist for check ups.
>>
>>42722435
It's probably a good idea just so the dentist can monitor any issues that may arise but are still asymptomatic. Periodontal problems can be relatively pain free and manageable until your teeth are about to fall out for example.
>>

The most physical pain I've had in my entire life was an infected tooth that kept me in agony all night.

I have a stainless steel cap on a molar right now that keeps giving me low level pain. Either something bad is going on under the crown, the crown feels kind of loose, or food might be getting up in there from a receded gum line.

I wish I had taken better care of my teeth. Now I'm brushing twice a day with sensodyne, mouthwashing a few times, and using Enamelon that my dentist gave me.

Your teeth are so tight that when you have cavity it is also affecting next tooth. I have to admit that dentists are overpriced, but very often people come with advanced cavities and because of that it is even more expensive. You probably have very good genetics, which is the main factor for good teeth, but others mostly do not have. Frequent check ups are the best method to save the money and teeth, but it is up to you do you love more beauty or money. At the end of the day, people can live perfectly fine without all teeth.

I've been binging and purging for about a year now. I'm trying to stop, but I'm paranoid about my teeth. They aren't discolored, or chipped, but I can feel holes with my tongue. I'm stressing the fuck out and I don't know what to do. Is there a way to fix them without going to the dentist? I'm really ashamed.
>>
>>42723573

Do it bro. Same thing honestly crooked teeth killed my self esteem.

It was twice as fast as regular braces, but ~$500 more expensive. The ease of being able to take your braces off is you chose is what sold me. I didn't want to be a 25yo with metal braces.

It was like 1k down and then ~300 a month, put it on the credit card, DO IT NOW. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!!

If your ass fucks up, then you can't shit, then you die from toxic megacolon or an acute abdomen. If your teeth crack or chip, nothing fucking happens. We evolved to make a bunch of kids from the age of 15 to 25, and survive long enough to raise them to a point they can care for themselves. Not to live until we're 80 years old and have a nice set of teeth.

Evolution doesn't "perfect" things. It's makes them good enough to reproduce successfully.

not arguing with mewing, but my relatively uninformed layman's opinion is that topical fluoride is good for teeth, and makes them harder and stronger, based on what i've heard from dentists. fluoride ingestion is probably not anything good, but i've heard enough dentists agree with fluoride use to use it.

I literally brush my teeth like once a week,
usually around the weekends when I'm about to go on dates,
but when I do, I do it properly, flossing, and really cleaning it up

I never had problems with caries, and only once had a starting problem with cavity
still I try to get to a dentist at least once a year

its just that I don't eat too much trash and sweets,
also vodka really cleans it up
>>
>>42726752
mine weren't bad enough to need any fillings, thankfully. i've just been brushing MUCH more gently and changing my diet to create a less acidic environment in my mouth. i think i flossed much too forcefully as well, so i've stopped using so much force. i also started using xylitol mints after meals (allegedly kills the bacteria that cause cavities/plaque buildup).

my dietary changes:
3 meals per day, very minimal snacking (once every couple of weeks, never any sugar). used to do shit like eat plain yogurt all day at work.
eating way more dairy, including some cheese like brie/gouda for vitamin k2
less fruit/natural sugars (2 servings per day). had already cut out most sugary foods but was eating tons of fruit.
no drinks other than water between meals. cut out all fruit juices in general.

just a heads-up to everyone, I've spent days in the fucking dentist's office, I know how this goes, if you're not already taking it seriously then you need to take this shit seriously
I didn't and I ended up with a crown that had to be fixed several times before they finally cracked what tooth I had left and had to pull it
people compare things to getting teeth pulled for a reason, it's tied with breaking a leg for the most painful experience I've ever had
they also compare things to a root canal for a reason, it's pretty close to being as painful as getting a tooth pulled, and yes, these are both with numbing shots
>but they can knock me out and pull it
it'll still hurt when you wake up
also you might want to stay awake to keep an eye on the dentist
for my second tooth pulled (wisdom tooth), the dentist fucking torqued on my jaw like it was a socket wrench, I actually had to tell this fucker it would work better and freak me out less if held my jaw in place (he told me he knew what he was doing, but a minute or two later he held it in place and things went a lot more smoothly)
now my jaw clicks when I open it too wide
you can't get around it either, if things get near the point of needing a tooth pulled or needing a root canal and you don't get them fixed, odds are eventually you'll get an abscess, a fleshy pocket of infection
an abscess looks nasty, it smells nasty, it tastes tasty, it can be incredibly painful, and it will put you in the hospital or even kill you by poisoning your blood with fucking pus
>but I don't need to floss, right?
FLOSS THAT SHIT NIGGA
you don't know how many more fucking cavities come from between your teeth than from the front or back, even when you don't brush you're more likely to get them between your teeth
>>
>>42726792
same for me when comes to 3 meals and more dairy. i cut out all soda sweet shit fruit juices as well. i don't feel the sensitivity much but it's definitely there. sad man i fucked up brushing too hard. i make sure to only hold my bush with my thumb and index to stop that. hopefully fillings make it good again

she also recommended an electric toothbrush to me now that i remember it. i guess the idea being that it break old habits.

sorry for the triple post--a hygienist also suggested to me to hold the toothbrush with only my thumb and index finger to force myself to brush more lightly. she said that anything you're supposed to remove by brushing is extremely soft. anything you can't get off with very little force is only meant to be removed by the dentist at a cleaning.

>>42726838
yeah i honestly got really depressed about it too. but my mom and her brother had the same issue (bad enough to need fillings) and they don't really have any issues now. my dentist also told me that tooth sensitivity naturally decreases with age as long if you keep your teeth in reasonably good shape--she said something like your tooth nerves pull back and become less sensitive. also said around 25 is the worst age for tooth sensitivity
>>
>>42726864
OH, i also learned that it can be a bad idea to brush your teeth to soon after you eat (less than a half hour) because your mouth is acidic and it makes you more likely to wear away enamel while brushing. i used to do something like eat an apple and drink some orange juice for breakfast then go brush my teeth right after.
>>
>>42726864
i make sure to brush my teeth and tongue and floss even during the days im dead fucking tired. i also will not fucking miss a dentist check up now.

>apple and drink some orange juice for breakfast then go brush my teeth right after

>>
>>42726944
honestly i think sometimes you just get away with stuff until things line up wrong. i never had any problems with this when i was younger, but then i went through a period of my life of
-really high stress
-poor diet and excess snacking to keep myself going
-not enough dairy
-forgot to replace my toothbrush for way too long
-eating too much sugary fruit without realizing it was bad for me

all at the same time as my bad brushing habits. i feel like you can get away with a lot of stupid shit, but if a risk factor changes, it can suddenly blow up in your face. that's why i'm dedicated to going to the dentists every 6 months for life now as well
>>
>>42716647
if the roots crack, that's it
the tooth is dead and all you can do is hope it takes a long time to rot and doesn't give too big of an infection

Man let me tell you how fucked I even feel even after changing my life around.

I went out and made friends, learned how to act like a normal human being.

I got into music festivals, met plenty of cool people.

Lost weight, 78lbs down with 8 more to get under 200.

I buzzed my head to avoid the super receding hairline and grey hair (at age fucking 22).

I razer this retarded amount of body hair before any event I go to.

But my teeth. my teeth are destroyed. Was never tought how to take care of my teeth, as of right now most of them have lost their enamel, with the wisdom teeth just being black stubs. I can only chew with the front of my mouth and I'll rarely smile if I can help it.

No matter what I try to fix, I'll still be a fugly boy.
>>

And same, it's been receding since 17-18. It wasn't until this month I buzzed it off. Friends all say it's better.
>>
>>42727216

if you already fucked up or got in an accident and have crowns, you should be careful around them
otherwise, no, you'd have to put way more pressure on it than you should in order to cause damage
>tight teeth
flossers/floss sticks can be a huge help here
you can also always just pull it through, BUT you don't want to do that with it up against your gums, because then you're basically sawing into your gums
yes, THAT SHIT, that back-and-forth through the teeth shit, THAT is what fucks up your gums and people think flossing is bad
it's supposed to go UP AND DOWN, and only up and down like 2-4 times, not ever back and forth

what the fuck would you expect to happen? "here's a pill that'll fix your teeth"?
>Teeth 100% fine, Wisdom teeth give me no pain, none of my teeth are sensitive.
your wisdom teeth are probably either fucking gone and rotted away into nothing or somehow pinched off their own nerves
your cavities have definitely filled in with plaque, it's almost as good an insulator as enamel so it lowers sensitivity-- until it gets cleaned away
but of course having a cavity full of plaque means eventually it'll hurt, and if continues to be left alone it may form an abscess, please see above for how nasty those are
