As fitness related as powerlifting
>>
> 6'7" 230 lbs
> Intermediate lifts (no squat tho)

Considering getting into martial arts to complement fitness, my coworker recommended Muay Thai. I am looking for something that teaches me some fighting skills as well as improves mobility, cardio, etc to go along with lifting.

Only thing I worry about is a torn adductor in my left hip prevents me from a lot of movements and results in debilitating pain. Any other recommendations based on that?

Also, is once per week training enough to get a general base on the skills?

I do kickboxing and recently started sparring. My kicks are decent but I cannot into boxing, but my strategy of staying away and throwing lots of kicks with some shitty straights is working against other noobs while I gradually figure out infighting and hooks.
>>
>>42681772
As long as you get enough sleep and food then you should be fine.
Try adding running into your routine.
Work up to about two 6 km runs a week and a sprint workout.
>>
>>42681825
Try to establish a jab and then throw a cross after it.
You can also use your kicks to set up punches, it front kick-cross-hook.
>>
Starting judo in about a week. Can only attend one class per week because of my university schedule conflicting timetables (until next semester at least) Will I be able to make decent progress or stuck as white belt for super long

Also any tips?
>>
>>42681589
A torn hip is bad for learning to kickbox, but maybe doing the muay thai course will help you rehabilitate it.
>>
>>42681825
You gotta learn to close the distance
Try to add in some punches to your kicks
Like start with body punches and do the high kick finisher
>>
>>42681873
Cool, so far my only real kick to set up punch combo is inside leg kick, jab, cross, outside leg or body kick. I'll try cross hook. The only hooks I throw are the hook, jab combo against south paws.

>>42681889
Yeah distance-wise I either stay at range and pick apart people who are somehow worse at distance management than me, or eventually they close the distance and swarm me with punches (like the end of Cung Le vs Wanderlei Silva). I'll definitely have to mix in body punches, right now I just set up head kicks with other kicks.

You'll be stuck as a white belt for awhile, but you'll end up a very good white belt. Just keep on it and next semester arrange your classes so they don't conflict with Judo. You might also be able to find people (probably other noobs) in your school willing to practice with you outside of class.

http://forums.sherdog.com

Sherdog is pretty good for figuring out your opponents if you spar with them often. Just search up something like "how to counter the jab", etc.

If you have the time I would recommend yoga aswell.
>>
>>42682214
Sounds good. I have pretty good instructors as well, I just need to put in the time!

I'd love to do yoga but haven't found a school that really fits in location and stretching wise (my martial arts gym has yoga once a week but it's during kickboxing). I just do 30 minutes of stretching 2-3x/week and 10 minutes of stretching 3-4x/week. Gotta maintain my ability to throw kicks.

Just started BJJ, it's pretty fun. I think it could be a good outlet for me (lifting doesn't do it), and it's also cardio without being cardio.

>What shit do you do to make your straining specific to rugby (lifts wise)
I am a rookie, but right now I'm doing a lot of cleans (because I want to sprint faster and get more explosive power), as well as hip abduction/adduction (good girl bad girl machine and resistance bands) because it helps with your sidestepping/agility.

and a lot of neck training on off days, because a strong neck reduces the consequences and risk of concussion.

i'm surprised I don't see the martial artists in my gym doing more cleans and oly-esque stuff, is there a reason? I would have thought it would help for the explosive power behind strikes, increase pound for pound strength and what not
>>

Dude your just wrong. A boxer does not have the mechanics to deal with the tools an mma fighter has, that's why the chucks beg them to fight in a boxing ring and not the octagon.

Boxing teaches you foot work and how to fight another boxer

Boxing is a sport and yes it will definitely help you kick ass on the street 90% of people can't throw a punch, but if you try fighting a guy with same amount of time under his belt as you but he does shit like Muay Thai, bjj your just fucked lad, I'm sorry
>>
>>42686578
Only sparring means you'll come to lack technical skill eventually.
>>
>>42686734
i mean sparring instead of kata
you shouldnt neglect training basic hits, combos and advanced tecniques at the bag or with a cooperative partner (meaning that he doesnt counterattack)

it's fucking gay and not respectable fighting.

the only people that think that shit is real fighting are other bjj faggots.

if i got into a street fight and some cuck starts trying to choke and kick, i;m just gonna grab a pipe and bash his face in.

>>
>>42686785
First of all your in a street fight, you don't respect that fucking guy because as a fighter I know your not going out to bar trying to beat some poor souls head in right anon? Because you and I know better than that. Secondly end the fight as fast as possible, how do you do that? Run or put them in a submission, of course you run the risk of his mates breaking your skull while on the ground.

Muay Thai is not meme shit, it's the staple of almost every big fighters deckl

Yeah, cause all boxers have one punch knock out power? You sound silly.

Its pretty obvious that kid has some experience by his rhythm, movement, and how he threw his punches. Downplay it all you want but, he made a poor choice of throwing a hook to the body that put him into grabbing range instantly.

Also he did manage to land a hook to the nose that bloodied him. If you look at the floor the guy that slammed him is trailing blood out the door so, I'm not saying boxing is useless but in a fight with someone that can completely negate that by putting you on the ground its not going to go well.

>>42688123

Imagine that mother fucker hitting your unconditioned shin or calf, you literally cannot fight back, that's a Charlie horse if iv ever seen one

>Not everybody on 4chan is a neckbeard basement faggot
You sure sound like one if you are teaching yourself TKD and thinking you'd even last against a novice in a gym.

Get your ass to the gym and let the coach test you for sparing, gonna learn real quick getting hit changes the entire sport.
>>
>>42688461
>self taught
>taekwondo background
can smell your fedora bro, you are delusional, no sparring means early death
>>
>>42688520
of course you can't. if you could, you'd end up embarrassed and so ashamed that you'd walk out on the first day with your eyes firmly affixed to the toes of your shoes. then you'd get online and talk about how the guys you trained with didn't know anything, because they didn't move in the "perfect" way you studied, and it isn't worth training with people who are just going to drag you down to mediocrity.

yes, i figured all of that out from one comment.

lmao why are you guys so upset?? I've gotten my ass kicked before, and vice versa. Not in street fights, but in multiple forms of sparring (tkd, wrestling, boxing, and pugil sticks because I went to a military school). I just want to learn how to specifically be a kickboxer now. I'll update you guys when I finally join a gym, sound good?
>>

your comment was my favorite though, idk whats with people on this website thinking they can psychologically profile someone from "one comment". One Comment Man! I mean I understand it's generally pretty easy to do that but man oh man you really missed the ball on this one.

>>42688692
I was upset because it sounded like you never got hit before, if your a trained fighter just state that.

>i like your funny jokes about me, anon
the classic bullied autist response.

>>
>>42688733
I'm not a "trained fighter". I'm "trained", and I have "fought", but it's not like I've ever contested in an actual competitive match or dedicated myself to it as a sport.

I kinda hate cleans and high pulls(not tecnical to do snatches)
I just do lots of squats and deadlifts.

Can we end this meme once and for all so that >>42686785 can stop posting the same meme over and over?

Try boxing for a month seriously, anytime i have being into a kickboxing fight, kickboxers ar like throw a kick, opponent throws a kick then they throw another, they dont know how to be slick as a boxer and dont know how to chain movements like a boxer does, thats why some of the best kick boxers ar also into boxing, is just u dont learn that too well from most of kick boxing coachs.
