Depends on how you define intelligence, but if you eliminate everything that doesn't fall under the purview of 'IQ' you end up with a pretty reliable predictor of certain metrics in life. There's a lot of bullshit in psychology but IQ is a rare instance where it is actually well-researched and conclusive

>>

>pretending there are no studies that show IQ tests aren't valid because you scored 125 once and have nothing else to be proud of
>>
>>42547878
IQ tests are a meme. The online ones are especially dumb because there's no accreditation process and any dumbfuck can make one and tell you you have an IQ of 160 to make you feel good about yourself.

Intelligence isn't something that can be measured by a number anyways. People who are good at IQ tests could be retarded in real life, it just so happens they're good at recognizing patterns.
>>
>>42549449
I've never taken an IQ test, but there is a tremendous amount of research backing up its validity as a predictor of various "success" metrics. The correlation isn't 1:1; people who have a low IQ can still be successful, and people who have a high IQ can still be failures.

Anyone who say shit like this
>>42549473
Has no idea what they're talking about. IQ is probably the most well-researched phenomenon in modern psychology.

>Intelligence isn't something that can be measured by a number anyways.
Why not? And IQ doesn't profess to "measure intelligence", it's an estimate of certain factors that contribute to intelligence. Obviously intelligence is a nebulous concept but that doesn't mean that we can't devise a means to quantify some aspect of it (and indeed we have, with IQ).
>>
>>42549524
The correlation is less than .5 for anything related to success and IQ, and there is so much criticism surrounding IQ in general. You have no idea what you're talking about

I am a psychologist and I give IQ tests quite often (especially the Wechsler tests). In all honesty IQ tests are not so useful in detecting and measuring genius/intelligence as they are in finding problems. I mean they are much more useful when dealing with the left side of the bell curve, if you know what I mean.

Short term memory, reasoning skill, verbal ability, creative intelligence, emotional and social intelligence (rapport, eye and speech tells), or specific skills in specialized knowledge.. are some of the problems with it.
>>
>>42547966
iq tests were created empirically. social scientists first looked at answers to questions only successful people got right and continued to refine it to the iq tests you see today.

>>42549542
>there is so much criticism surrounding IQ in general
In certain contexts, like racial differences in IQ and research methodology. There are very, very few respected people in the field who would disown the concept of IQ entirely.

This argument is the equivalent of saying "there is so much criticism surrounding climate change, therefore it is bullshit".

>>42549592
Creative, social and emotional "intelligence" are deliberately excluded from IQ assessments, so I'm not sure what your point is here. IQ isn't trying to assess those metrics, and psychologists are not saying that being skilled in other areas is not important or relevant. You're basically complaining that a math exam doesn't test your knowledge of history; no shit, it isn't intended to. Researchers do not profess IQ to be the ultimate and sole determinant of every single variable in human intelligence. You're just arguing a nonsense strawman.
>>
>>42547966
Some tests are much easier to create then to solve.
>>
>>42549651
You are right, the only thing to add is that we are not even sure of what the IQ tests measure, for example we have yet to provide a solid explanation for things like the Flynn effect!
>>
>>42549677
Yes there are flaws with it obviously; the Flynn effect is indeed bizarre and there has definitely been some shoddy research in the field over the years (like The Bell Curve, even though /pol/ doesn't want to hear it). People who rally against IQ misinterpret what it is suppose to measure and what it is correlated against and think that it represents some type of biological determinism.
>>
>>42549570
That's the best it shows, and I think that's only for success in school or something.

.5 is not high enough to say there's a direct link.
>>
>>42549704
Another problem we have in the EU is that our determinant for benefits from the state (for the mentally handicapped) is so arbitrarily decided that I see colleagues, and even myself, sometimes putting the score of a patient one or two points lower so that he/she can qualify for benefits. The meaning of that number is absurdly misunderstood even from the government.

I think we finally agree, IQ measures aptitude for some kinds of intelligence, but people, like the op pic, who try to use IQ numbers as a straight up metric of intelligence are dumb.
>>
>>42547968
Where is this from, I've been looking for the source for years
>>
>>42549713
>.5 is not high enough to say there's a direct link.
You can't say if there's a link based on correlation alone, retard. Jesus christ. Learn what a p-value is and come back.
>>

It's WAY more than 5% due to experiments lacking statistical power, publication bias, an academic focus on quantity and p-hacking.

Internet IQ tests have totally warped the public's perception about IQ. The only thing internet IQ tests are good for is determining whether or not somebody is dumb enough to take internet IQ tests seriously.

An actual IQ of 150 puts a person in the top 0.01% of the population.
>>
>>42550943
It's not really their fault half the time; professors are pressured to publish so frequently that it's inevitable that at least half of it is total bullshit. I went to CU-Boulder for undergrad, and I had a younger professor who was going for tenure and had to publish something absurd like three books in eight years. Obviously that's completely impossible without "cheating" in some way.

Psych isn't really a "meme degree" but there is a lot of bad science in the field unfourtunately
>>
>>42551001
>It's not really their fault half the time
In most cases I agree but Stapel blatantly fabricated data for decades.
>>
>>42551020
Oh yea, that was a particularly egregious case. I was just referring to blaming researchers for the "crisis" as a whole, when really it's a problem with the entire system. Universities need to get the research cock out of their collective asses and start welcoming professors who would rather focus on teaching as opposed to publishing useless nonsense. Students would be a lot better served if the schools could handle the hit to their prestige.

i'm just saying that outside the 3 or 4 good departments, there's nothing you can do at boulder that you can't get the same for cheaper out of CSU. boulder has shit name recognition because it was a party school until 4 years ago, so you can't even bank on that. if you want to waste your cash on a stupid degree thats on you, and thank you and the rest of the humanities for subsidizing lab expenses.

Typical STEMcuck response. I was a double major in IR and arabic, have two masters and have been working for the past ~8 years as a contractor for the state department. Boulder is a large state school - it is the same as pretty much every large state school and is extremely cheap if you pay in-state tuition. ANY degree can get a job, because most employers do not give a fuck about your major or where you went to school, as long as you got good grades and have work experience. My father majored in english and makes ~$250k as a contract lawyer. My older sister majored in english and has a great job working for a university library in DC. Her husband majored in political science and works for the DoD.
My younger brother majored in religious studies and just recently got a job working for amnesty international.

I didn't study the arts, but I recognize that they are important because I'm not an uncultured gorilla. I also understand that what you major in is not the most important thing in life, and is rarely relevant from an employment standpoint as long as you did well in school. STEM elitism is the most pathetic fucking thing imaginable. Sorry you got bullied while at Boulder but it honestly sounds like you deserve it for being such an insufferable faggot

IQ has little to no correlation with success imo, so it's not really worth bawking about unless it's super high or super low.

Build social capital.

IQ gives you someting to brag about, but connections bring you jobs, friends, dates, girlfriends, fwbs, opportunities, etc.

IQ doesn't mean shit in the real economy. You might as well be bragging about your GPA (which also doesn't really matter).

Let me explain brainlets, less "generally intelligent" people can be smarter in certain fields than you nonbrainlet high iq sick cunt. I have over 130 iq, and the one thing it matters in is I can pretty much learn normie hobbies and stuff to an very high level in no time. But most really complex shit requires repetition and an adhd person like me really wont learn stuff more than "superficially". Ofc I am an professional in a few areas since my general interest did not wane in them. Being confident is the best way to be attractive, and it's not a trick. You can't just turn on confidence, you must actually be confident. Secure in your sense of humor, what you've got to offer intellectually, your beliefs, your appearance. If you're actively thinking about these things and what people think of them, you will suddenly lose them all. You're not gonna think of anything smart or funny to say if your thinking about smart and funny things to say, you've goto be thinking about the actual content of other people's words. And that's a hard switch to make if you're used to wigging out on these things in your mind, but you've actually goto be confident, that's no fucking cop out.

>>
> Nothing about taking care of the baby?
>>
>>42553917
IQ is a pure measure of intelligence. Accumulating knowledge does not mean you can use it well. It might take you 50 years to "master" something that someone of high IQ can simply "understand" through pattern matching skills in an intuitive way. That is because they do not memorize patterns, they deduce them. IQ enables people to be successful at pretty much anything. It provides them with the ability to understand the problem domain, understand how to solve the problems themselves, and apply what they learn to a variety of situations. They learn fast and well. They remember what matters. They can reason without needing to be told the answer. With low IQ you can become good at something, but it takes a lot of effort, rote memorization and reinforcement, and if you are kind of dumb you might not be able to apply what you learned to a related field or technology.

I wish high iq people could spend more time actually researching the things they love instead of confessing to the internet on a taiwanese knitting forum that they're better than them. It makes me wonder if the iq test result simply blinds them and attaches their internal belief to a matter of proving superiority instead of, you know, actually having a belief in being able to help the world through science, maths, etc.
oh what a shitty place the internet has wrought to community.
>>
>>42547878
IQ isn't all it's made out to be, its just a measure of your baseline. There are tons of people that have high IQs that never do anything with it and are happy just existing on minimal effort. High effort and self motivation will usually benefit you more that a high baseline, in most things anyway.
>>
Blunt put outs x F
>>
>>42557140
Oh, I am fully aware that I am bullshitting. But from my observation people of "normal" intelligence (I'm in an undergraduate engineering program, so it might actually be slightly above normal) are not capable of solving problems efficiently. They don't apply knowledge properly, they try to copy and paste what they learned from theory or in one situation to another. They often are incapable of doing their own research, they do not understand what they read, and they cannot "visualize" mathematical concepts. And these people are supposed to be engineers.

Maybe I am in a shit school, but from what I heard it's pretty average. I don't know if my ability to reason better and apply knowledge to practical situations has to do with IQ, but I can't think of anything else. I've consistently outperformed postgraduate students on topics I never or hardly ever dabbled on before. Why would that be?

By the way, I "help" plenty in the subject(s) I am interested in, because I find that kind of work to be satisfying and fulfilling. But I am not about to lower my level to make people feel better about their low intelligence. People of normal intelligence wouldn't understand how disheartening it is to be dragged through school from kindergarten to university, compensating for teammates' mediocrity to stay competitive and sitting through slow classes that drag on and on to make sure everyone understands.

I don't mean to boast, though I know it comes off as arrogant.
>>
>>42557140
>>42557208
Actually I misread your post, I thought you were shitting on my explanation of IQ since I really was just talking out of my ass from the little I've read about it and my own experience.

As far as researching my own interests I know there are people who just don't have the motivation or the interest to put work into it but I have already done some research on some subjects and am trying to get published. If not now I will surely have an opportunity to do so while I study postgraduate. But even among high IQ people I'm sure there are many who don't bother going that far, I wasn't intent on going to university initially. Proper research that advances science requires a solid understanding of a field, understanding of current problems and access to equipment, funding (for research itself and also for publishing fees, travel if targeting conferences, etc.) and plenty of hard work.

IQs not a meme but it's also not a wealth meter. I've learned faster than most of my peers my entire life. Performance in differential equations that took some of my classmates hours of practice problems took me attending class and reviewing my notes before the exam. When I put in half the effort most of peers do I easily get As. At the same time, if I'm a lazy shit like I'm prone to be it does me no good. It's like fitness. Genetics might load the gun but you're still the one with your finger on the trigger. You're delusional if you think all people are born equal and learn at the same rate and have the same capacity for logical analysis and reasoning, and that we can't consistently measure that ability in a meaningful way. You're equally delusional if you think having said ability means anything if you don't use it.

It's the best predictor of success apart from conscientiousness.

Doesn't mean you're a better or smarter or a more creative person or whatever good trait you want to insert, it just means that the current system is setup in a way that benefits those traits.

For instance, you could argue that creativity is more valuable than both of those traits but it's too hard to making a living from.

I think it's also important to somewhere differentiate with mere brain power and the way you actually use it.

You could say that intelligence is the brain power, how quickly and widely you make connections, how big your working memory is, your ability to grasp abstract concepts, etc.

Smart, probably the wrong word but, could mean how you use your brain power. I've met a lot of very intelligent people who in turn are not very smart, and vice versa. This is something you can train and improve while intelligence is somewhat static. Most successful people I know are not that intelligent, they just are either hard workers or have trained to utitilize their brain to it's fullest potential.

Okay, cooking I kinda understand from my own experience. Men usually are better cooks than women when they actually care and put some time into learning stuff. I've been raised in the countryside, so I am confident when I say that the food most modern women make is bland as fuck, and I'd rather make it myself.

But cleaning? Nigguh.
