People like fit/healthy people because it shows they have self-restraint, and a good diet. This is not normal in an age of high fat/sugar foods and sessile lifestyles.
People who are fat/unhealthy usually have very apparent character/personality flaws that are indicative of undesirable companions. They also are a burden on society. As such, the average person will be less interested in such an individual.
