38, overweight, married. Where's the rope ...
This fucking shithole of a north korean world understanding board at least has led me to start lifting and cutting - in the log run i will make it as well. The nice thing is I don't have to lift for girls or aesthetics - I can do it just for me.

31 here. Still got 2 years of university, GI bill runs out this semester, have to sit on PTSD army pay and vocational rehab pay to get through.

Starting Stronglifts 5x5 today

If I shaved, I'd look like I was 23.

Turned 35 recently. After nearly two decades of drinking, heavy smoking, not giving a fuck about what and how much I eat and barely ever excercising I look 27 at most (confirmed by pretty much every new person I meet) and stay naturally slim. I recently decided I could use some muscle so I started lifting, but I don't make it, I won't mind. Whenever I see other dudes my age (balding, sad fucks that look like they could be my father) I thank the genetic lottery.
>>
35. Married with two kids. Fat wife who hates my gym hobby.

120kg x 3 bench, 147,5kg x 1 squat, 180kg x 1 diddy.

Going to start my second diet after I get my diddy to 200kg. Then it's a cruise to 10-12% body fat. Currently at around 20%.

Having a fat wife just makes things more interesting. I'm stronger than I've ever been and I feel great. My long time goal is to get her lose weight so that my kids will still have a loving mom when she hits 60 and doesn't die from beetus before that.

No more alcohol anymore though, the hangovers last for multiple days snd recovering is a bitch.

43.
I run my own healthcare business in NYS. Got fit starting last November after a bad relationship and 3 bottles of whiskey a week was putting me on the road to ruin.
Lost 68lbs since Nov 1st 2016 and leaned out this past summer. 180lbs 9% bodyfat. Have a steady girlfriend after dating this past spring so i have no problems there. Drive a nice car and have a nice home but New York is pricey to live. Oh well, that's life.
>>
38, and have spent 10+ years of "lift for 2 months, don't lift for 2 years" BS.
Finally starting to get a habit established (homegym masterrace) and although gains have been slow in coming, I'm better than I was a year ago.
>>
31 year old overweight wizard here.

Started working out and dieting about 5 months ago, lost about 50lbs. If I can keep up the pace I'll be in a healthy weight range in a few months, but I'm aiming for low bf% to get rid of the fat. I hope my loose skin isn't awful. I'm lifting to build muscle to mitigate it, but also to hopefully look decent eventually.

I'm doing it for my own health, but I'd love to get a date someday.

Don't squat, dead srs. It gives you incredible results, I can't deny that, but all the compression on your spine takes its toll after a while. There's a reason why pretty much every powerlifter blows out their back/hip after enough time. Unless you're a pro athlete and need as much leg strength as possible just use the hack squat machine or something, you 10 years in the future will thank you.
>>
>>42519553
I can confirm this. Don't listen to idiots on here who say squats are supreme.

You want to not have a fucked back and knees when you're 40 plus
>>
>>42519553
I'm 20 and I love squatting. Should I stop doing it or just use less weight?
>>
>>42519630

I used to love squatting too and got really good at it. Squatted 4 plate for 2 reps in my prime at 172 pounds body weight. Then the back problems kicked in ...

I can't say with absolute certainty that the same thing will happen to you, but I really don't think it's worth the risk unless you have a good reason to squat, like you're a competitive athlete as I said. I'd just do some bro bullshit instead like hack squats to make sure you don't have pencil legs and call it a day.
>>
>>42519739
I'll probably just squat the bar or pussy weight every now and then. Thanks, solid advice.

Had to drop recreational soccer because the games were late, couldn't keep up with 18-20 somethings, and recovery now takes forever. Drinking heavily now that the bears are back on
>>
>>42520007
nothing ages men like drinking heavily. A big reason guys in their early thirtys still look 25 is they were never heavy drinkers.

I see guys 24 25 who have been drinking heavily for years and they legit look 5 years older than me.
find a better vice limit drinking to once a week, only liquor with a clean mixer
>>
>>42519515
I appreciate that. I've been on one date, three if I'm being generous. I just see how bitter some men get, and I refuse to do that to myself. I know I'll find someone eventually, I'm not unlikable.

Its hard to not have some regret for waiting so long to lose weight, but the push I needed to be serious about it happened when it happened.
>>
>>42520063
I was only joking about the bears. Sunday is my boozing day with redzone when the regular season starts. We let the kiddos have movies while we binge. I know all about people aging poorly; we went to the beach this past Sunday. I'm 6', 175 and was one of the few non-fatties there
>>

I'm so ready.
But bro, if this kneeling for the anthem becomes a bigger thing and they push more SJW shit. I will boycot.

>>
>>42520385
>I'm a phins fan, we got Cutler. U jelly
The bears are paying the price for Angelo and Emery making bone head decisions for a long time. Hope he does well there, but man don't get too upset when he commits a turnover at the worst possible time. Phins defense should be good enough to cover up that part of his game though
>>
>>42520456
I know what to expect from cutty. been a fan and a serious fantasy football player for like 10 years now.
Atleast he can throw a fuckin deep ball unlike Tanahill.

The bears needed a change tho, who is your qb right now?
>>
>>42520510
>The bears needed a change tho, who is your qb right now?
...Glennon. He's getting paid a lot to be absolutely destroyed this year and next while Trubisky gets eased into the NFL. It's going to be a shit show, especially since the bears schedule (on paper) is pretty rough.

Hopefully they give me rage power on lifts and runs during the week.

> Was 230 pounds last June
> Gained weight for a bunch of reasons, but really I fucked up
> Started working out
> Was 220 at the beginning of this year
> was 210 in May - then I began 8/16 intermittent fasting
> I'm 195 pounds right now, 20 pounds left.

Feels good - You can do this.
>>
>>42521021
what does 8/16 mean?
>>
>>42521076
I think you're only allowed to eat during 8 hours of the day with intermittent fasting
>>
>>42521076
>>42521092

8/16 intermittent fasting is when you eat your meals in an 8 hour (or less) period and don't eat the rest of the 16 hours. At this point I've been eating my breakfast at 8am, lunch at 11am, and dinner at 2pm. The other 18 hours I don't eat. I sleep like a baby and the fat has been flying off.
>>
>>42521106
how do you not get hungry.
I become like a raging animal when i'm hungry. Like i'm ready to fight.
>>
i'm 26, this /oldfit/ thread is so comfy
>>
30 here, started getting serious about lifting earlier this year. It was really rough going since my wife and I had our first (don't want to be an out of shape dad).

I'm getting ready to do my first cut, but kind of frustrated that my wife doesn't want to lose anymore weight since the baby. It's not a huge deal since she is only 5lbs heavier than before she got pregnant but I'd be lying if I didn't find her most attractive at the start of our marriage.
>>
>>42521121
It takes time.
It takes discipline.
You have to commit to this cut. By commit, I mean I only work out like once a week because this cut is fucking hard. I do get hungry but when I see how far I've come, my size 36 pants literally falling off without a belt that has gone three notches tighter...its all worth it brah.
>>
>>42521168
I recommend researching into HGH and IF, it's pretty interesting.
There is evidence that when fasted in the morning the body continues to produce HGH for several hours, which a breakfast would hinder.
>>
>>42517584
>37
>lifting religiously since 18
>currently hovering around 180 lbs
>10% body fat and dropping
>5'7" manlet and whatever

I used steroids from age 25 to 28 and haven't touched them since. I was recently beginning to feel as if my testosterone was dropping. Less boners, bummed out, no motivation, etc.

Before going on the permanent lifetime Test cycle I ordered a shitload of creatine to see if it would help. Using 8 grams a day and I feel fucking amazing again. I know creatine increases DHT conversion so maybe that's it. It may not work for me forever, but I'm pretty happy at the moment.

>tfw still making it
>inb4 "manlet... making it... pick one" comment
>>
>>42521153
Congrats on the baby. Kudos for setting an example. Make the fat dads envious.

Is your wife breast feeding? That burns a lot of calories and causes a lot of mad hormone swings. Also try to make date night a fit activity followed up with drinks and dessert instead of dinner. Rock climbing, hiking, yoga, and paddle sports are fun and fairly easy
>>
>>42521133
I know right? I'm 28 and this thread give me hope.

I mean, sure I disappointed my father by not being the son he wanted, but I'm living on my own terms now and he's dying. Silver lining i guess?
>>

I eat like maybe 2 meals a day, but I eat like a pack of hyenas when I do. I never gain any mass unless I go on shitty programming jobs where I work like 18 hrs a day to meet deadlines.
>>
>>42521183
Yea I've tried to skip breakfast but then I end up eating more throughout the day. What I'm doing is working, I'm losing at least .25 pounds daily.

>>
>>42521244

how tf did you lose an inch of height
>>
>>42521198
Thanks man, luckily I'm just at skinnyfat to start (already run, work a physical job, eat okay).

Baby is 100% breastfed and we'll start incorporating solid foods here in a week or two. I'm open to suggestions of good things to start on. Most people have recommended Malt-O-Meal or some kind of grain paste but I'd rather go sweet potato or vegetable mash route.

As far as my wife is concerned she could easily lose the weight but she feels better being a little bigger. I think it's due to the fact we live in a very liberal, fat-positive town and she associates with a lot of them. In her mind being "skinny" looks bad because she's been inculcated into "fat is beautiful" culture for her entire life. I do want her to get into yoga or pilates, which I think would help regulate her mood a little better or give her a break from the baby.
>>
>>42521252
You shrink when you get older, from all the shit in your spine relaxing or compressing.

So far I'm down an inch in 18 years.
>>
32. started working out few years ago. gained 40 lbs. have shit genetics but still look skinny because tall. feels good still though. don't look anorexic anymore.
>>
>>42521121
You have to fight through that. Drink some water and some tea usually gives you a good reset. If you really feel like you won't make it through, try an apple or some tuna. But really, you can make it. Once you get used to it, you'll love the feeling.
>>
>>42521213
once he's dead he's gone forever, just reflect on that before you pass on any chance for reconciliation.
>>
>>42521213
My dad died a long time ago so I can't speak too much about reconciling, but try to be as open to the idea as you can. Watching my wife and her father struggle to have a relationship as he kills himself with food and laziness has been rough. If he can't see you as a man who's made his choices, fair enough, but don't leave him alone on his deathbed if you don't have to.
>>
>>42521257
Steam and mush vegetables or throw them in a food processor, just introduce one at a time (I have a nephew that gets explosive shits when he eats corn of all things). Greek yogurt is a good treat. When it's a little older egg whites, chicken, turkey that's all well cooked.

I've got nothing on the fat positive shit. My wife hated gaining weight. When yours stops breastfeeding and keeps eating, that could definitely become a problem

34 here, navy vet, teach philosophy at a local liberal arts college

Was a junk food vegetarian in my 20's. Kept me from being obese or overweight. Diagnosed with hypertension at 30. Did some reading, tried low salt and heavy lifting. Worked well except i hate lifting 5 days a week. Gradually stopped lifting, bp went back up. Fell into deep depression and anxiety. Accepted it was hereditary. Years later, I came across some whole food plant based vegan books. Read a few hundred studies. Started including super foods in my vegetarian diet- with no real results. One day, three months ago, I switched to whole food plant based- no sugar, salt, or oil. BP dropped to normal in about three weeks (30 points systolic). Depression and anxiety are gone. Feels bad that I waited so long to make a change.

Educate yourself about the stock market and how to invest. Learning about it is boring as shit but extremely necessary in today's economy.

I began investing at 23 with $3,000 I saved up after a couple of years, and then around age 26 I took out a loan of $15,000 and invested that. Taught myself to buy the things that I need before buying things that I want because living cheap while investing the leftover money adds up.

Now at age 37, I've got around $400,000 in the stock market and I own crop land that I lease to farmers for a steady and nearly effortless income. I come from a lower class blue collar family, grew up in a trailer home, and yet I managed to get myself out of the rat race by the age of 30.

School will not teach you how to be a leader, it will teach you how to be a worker. Go to school but constantly educate yourself on a subject that will benefit you. Getting fit is one of those subjects but managing and making money is equally important. Spending money will give you things but having money will give you options and having options in life feels so much better.

I read for about an hour every morning while I eat breakfast and sip my coffee before I workout. Make reading books and articles part of your daily routine. I could suggest a library of books but here are a few that I think are mandatory.

The first book to read is "Rich Dad Poor Dad".

I recommend that first because it isn't a 'how to' book at all, but it clearly gives you the type of mentality you need to avoid the paycheck to paycheck life.

The second book I'd say to read is another Kiyosaki book co-written with the Donald, "Why We Want You to Be Rich". It's an easy read and it knocks the idea that rich people are bad out of you. It explains away the idea that "the man" is holding you down and that rich people want the little people to remain wage slaves. If everyone has more money then everyone is better off. The belief that the 1% or any other group of people wants you to remain poor is ridiculous and this book points it out, and it was written 11 years ago before this whole hate the rich thing that's going on in America now.

Third, "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham. This is the Bible of investing. It was written in 1949 and everything in it still applies to investing today. This is really the only book you must read but getting into the habit of constantly reading is one of the most beneficial habits you can have.

Then, save some money and look into a basic investment service in your area. I started with Edward Jones and I still use them. They charge fees but if you use them as your bank instead of an actual bank, your money will pay interest unlike an account at Wells Fargo. Keeping your money in a bank that on average gives you around a 1% interest per year is the same as stuffing your money under your mattress.

I'm 23 but I agree. I've seen it. I've hurt my back twice on weight I could rep for 5+ (with a belt) and keeping decent form, quit after the second time. Everyone I know who squats heavy has hurt themself and they are all young. It's inevitable and your back simply isn't cut out for holding up 300-400 lbs. for reps.

I do leg press + lunges + 1 set of lighter squats (225 lbs) now. Legs are looking more muscular than ever and strong.
>>
>>42522183
What's your opinion on substituting back squats for front squats? Would you recommend hack squats (as mentioned above) instead?

I was planning on doing so once I reached a 5rm of 315lbs for my back squat, but might do so at ~265lbs

I've been working the same shit retail job for the past 7 years. I've tired college, but I don't think its for me. I've tried to looking into IT and getting a cert to be help desk, but I'm not sure if it's a good/safe plan. I've been told to go into trade, but I really don't want to be doing labor in my thirties. And I'm too dumb and mentally/physically weak for the army.

I feel like I will be stuck in this retail job forever. I am going back to community college this semester (only because it will make my mom happy and its cheap) and even though I feel like I won't like it, I want to try and get the best out of it. I want to try and network and try and have normal conversations with people. How do I become likable so that people will want to help me and become my friend?

I know my life is a mess. I'm trying to fix it now so that I don't go full r9k mode.
>>
>>42522272
I've only done front squats and leg curls for my upper legs for about 5 years now. Moderate weight on front squats for 6-8 reps and lots of sets, and 15-30 rep sets for leg curls. No more lower back or knee pain and my legs look a hell of a lot better and bigger than they were when I was trying to push up shitloads of weight doing back squats.
>>
>>42522272

Do you mean hack squats? Less pressure but I think the same general rule applies it is compressing your spine.

I really do like lunges, when done with good form and making sure not to screw with your knee tension they're a good all around leg workout

Basically the same strain on your legs pound for pound but half the strain on your back

I don't want to lose my sheer leg power so I still do a few sets of heavy leg press, then I do 2 or 3 sets of lunges with 150-155 lbs. at 14 reps or so total (7 per leg) which is roughly transitive to the 315 lbs. I used to squat for 7 reps total

Then I top it off with one set of 225 lb. squats and rep out, to maintain my squat mobility/stabilizers/erector strength

You're afraid of the unexpected and you have gotten comfortable with being uncomfortable because the thought of finding a new routine is scarier than keeping the one you've got.

Everyone goes through this at some point in their life, usually more than once. I'm in no way religious, but "This too shall pass" is my favorite quote. It means that nothing is infinite, and all hard times and good times and all material things will eventually change. Keep that quote in mind whenever you hate your current situation.

I think the best thing you can do is to do something that scares you. I felt nervous being in front of people so I tried out for plays and student films until I got a part. After 30+ plays and 12 movies I feel totally relaxed talking to large groups of people and entertaining people. That sounds like a lot of work, and it is, but it's better than watching time go by while you refuse to change the lifestyle that you hate living.

1. You hate your job. So you already know that you will one day quit that job and look for a better one. It's inevitable. What are you waiting for?

2. If you're going back to college assuming that you will hate it means that you already hate it. Whether you're happy or sad is all in your head and it's up to you to choose.

3. If you want to be able to talk to people and become more social then the ONLY way you will fix that is by talking to people and being more social. When you look at a person or a group of people and that instant thought of "I should go talk to them" pops up in your head, act on it immediately. That is what you really want to do and if you hesitate for even a second it will go away. Also, the only way to be likable and have friends is by being your authentic self. So making friends begins with working on yourself.
>>
>>42522461

Thanks, Anon. I'll keep this in mind for when I reach my back squat target and look to substitute.
>>
>>42522420
I'll normally do 2-3 warmup sets of front squats with 135 and then do 8-12 sets of 6-8 reps with 185 to 225 lbs. If you go deep you'll be surprised bow much you feel front squats in your hamstrings too. I do a Push/Pull/Legs routine and front squats are the only exercise that I do on leg day.

For leg curls, I do 4-5 sets of 15-30 lying leg curls at the beginning of my Pull workout.

I've been lifting for half my lifetime and I've found the exercises that work for me. Straight legged deadlifts work great on my hamstrings but they play hell on my lower back, and leg curls are the only exercise that has added size to my hamstrings. Leg extensions made my knees hurt, squats made my lower back and hips hurt, and with front squat I feel the exercise in all the right places with no pain outside of the muscles.

So over the course of around 20 years of lifting I've whittled my leg workouts down to the 2 most effective exercises that work for me. Now and then I'll do some lunges or something but not often.

Like another anon said about aging.
Drink when you go out but do NOT drink at home, especially by yourself when you're a young man.

I did that between 24-27 when I got my first house. My skin isint totally fucked but it's noticeable. I've recently started a skincare regime and within a month I'm noticing some improvement.
Good skin, good beard genes and I've now got a salt & pepper vibes going on but my hairs still thick ( my barber charges me double ) and the amount of mires is astronomical.
Can't wait for a reunion in a few months with some old class mates, it's going to be weird as that far and spotty kid is inside of me, everytime a 10/10 gives me interest I still feel like it's one big practical joke at my expense.

God bless fit for helping me start to make it. You glorious bastards (along with /FPH/) changed me for the better.
>>
>>42522549
>This too shall pass

I like that.
I've worked at a restaurant where my job was to talk to people. Sometimes its good other times its bad because the customer just wants his/her food and doesn't want to talk to me.

I've learned how to look people in the eyes so I'm not as bad as I used to be. The problem is that I can't use my people skills out side of work. I'm still too shy to open up and talk to random people on the streets or in class. I think because of this I'm missing out on networking with people.

I feel like if I just tried to talking to random people, I would come off as an awkward aspie person.

I normally stretch during my warmup sets. I go into a deep squat with light weight and hold it for a little while. I read something from Tom Platz and he said that was his best stretch and warmup, although he did like an entire gymnast routine of stretching before squatting. So I just do those and it works.

STOP SQUATTING YESTERDAY

YOUR BODY IS NOT MADE FOR SQUATTING

SWITCH TO LEG PRESS/LUNGES

YOU WILL WISH YOU DID IT EARLIER
>>
>>42522888
It's a combination of factors but chiefly among them, I feel, is the physical changes. Those helped motivate me for better clothes, which in turn helped out with the rest.
>>42522934
Body Shop seaweed scrub in the morning followed by Effaclar H moisturiser. Usually the same routine at night. Might use a Clinique eye cream in the morning if I've had no sleep. No eye cream at night though.
Once a week I'll exfoliate with some Glam Glow youth mud face mask, then throw on some botanical toner (usually Garnier SkinActive) followed by the moisturiser.

It's working so far, skin seems a bit former and no where near as oily.
Also, get plenty of water into you. The rest might be snake oil, but water sure as shit isint. Hope that makes sense.

I'm a collosal gimp, I manage to rub it into my eyes subconsciously somehow whilst asleep but that's just personal preference.

Oh forgot to mention use Bumble & Bumble shampoo and conditioner for hair. My hair is thick and course. That's made it feel a lot better recently. And lip care, I've always bitten my lips (nervous fat kid again) so I've started using Bodyshop Vitamin E lip balm. Way better than vasoline or other stuff. My lips hardly crack at all now.
But again, expensive snake oil.

I'm still in the trial and error phase of learning about all this shit so I'm probably not the best person to ask. Mate of mine put me all onto this stuff, should have asked her sooner but you know, most men just muddle by with this shit.

Do you happen to know why I end up getting dry skin after putting on sun screen?

I've been told that sunscreen is good for you, but whenever I use it my skin goes to shit and gets dry/flaky
>>
>>42523447
Erm, I'm no oracle in these matters but it depends if the sunscreen does or does not have any moisturiser in it.
I'm guessing it doesn't, so you're putting that on and the sun drys you out and you don't follow up with any After-Sun product.
Pretty much all women's facial stuff including make has sunscreen in it so they can get away with baking in the sun. Us men need to slap on some moisturiser afterwards when we're back inside to make up for it.

Go to /fa/ and look a their sticky, the culture is metrosexual which isn't a bad thing since those men really know their skincare.
Bottom line is the only good sunscreen comes from Japan and Australia.
Japanese sunscreen is VERY light and absorbs into skin very quickly, very forgiving.

https://www.amazon.com/Biore-Sarasara-Waterly-Essence-Sunscreen/dp/B004LRO7DO
This for example is pretty nice and forgiving, if you're worried about your skin really look at their sticky.
The simplest and usually best solution is wash face + sunscreen in the morning and at night wash face + toner + moisturizer.

39 here.

I started lifting in April. I went down from about 20 or 22% bf to about 15 or 16 now and trying to get to about 10-12.

Went to one of those ninja warrior gyms with my wife's friend and her husband who are pretty fit. I was just hoping to not get upstaged by their kid, but I was able to do as good or better than they did, which I know I wouldn't have done at the beginning of the year.

I'm the same way. The roads between my goals are longer, but I had a rotary cuff injury that didn't stop being miserable for YEARS and I don't plan to invite that kind of pain into my life again if I can help it.

Try to get her into at least counting calories. She hates your hobby because she's probably insecure as fuck that you're going to leave her for some cardio bunny. This isn't even that irrational of a fear, which makes her hatred of it that much more intense.

Along with this advice, I'd say make sure you prioritize making and saving money. I'm 32 and my wife and I have a net worth around $1 million because we've lived well below our means and saved/invested a lot, including making a good real estate investment in our mid 20s. Neither of us have rich parents or extremely high paying jobs (wife has been a stay at home mom for the last year), but we're in much better shape than a lot of people our age because we were smart with our money from an early age. Don't wait until you're in your 30s to start thinking about retirement savings and all of that. Put away everything you can now. The earlier you start, the more you can accumulate over your lifetime and the less you'll have to worry about when you get older.

>Drink when you go out but do NOT drink at home
This is good advice. I drank fairly heavily for a couple of years (6-8 high ABV beers a night) and it really took a toll on my face. I had a constant light red tinge and just looked bloated. I gained 20 lbs over that time too. I stopped drinking at home a few months ago and have only had beers socially a few times since then. I lost 20 lbs over that time and my face looks 100 times better. The redness is mostly gone and I can see my cheekbones again. Not spending $10+ a day on beer has also been a nice benefit.
