Sup /Fit/ fellow gym member got me on here and said it was a great place to find a range of experience and objective thoughts on fitness.

>>Research certs and philosophies of programs.
>>Pick NASM and begin self-studying text for 8 months in my spare time.
>> Finally enroll in self-guided study program.
>>Last week passed final exam and now I wait to take my cert exam.
As I have worked in the health and fitness world more while I studied I noticed the "real-world" expectations and scenarios from business to program design and client interest in the sciences is not what these programs teach you about. (Duh).
I am curious what /Fit/ thoughts on if you had to choose a program to cert through for the quality of education which would you pick? Pros/cons.
My program and book don't direct me to great places to check for current studies/research to keep up with industry changes. Got any?
Having come from the film industry to fitness as a profession is a whirlwind. Love the mind-body connection I get when I workout or articulating movement. Anyone else have some profound changes after starting a more fitness focused life style?

NASM is pretty much the standard when it comes to certs. Further your education through colleges if you can, even just a community college. One certification is enough to get your foot in the door for the industry but not going to be enough to make a living off of. You need to continue education and never stop. As far as keeping up with recent studies, NSCA and equivalents are usually churning stuff out. At some point in time, you may need to focus down on a single realm regarding "health + fitness". This includes but just isn't limited to: rehabilitation (PT, Chiro, etc), Strength+/conditioning, body composition/nutritionist work

To add onto this regarding business advice, start in a commercial gym in order to gain a foundation of experience. You need to be comfortable in sales, working with people, and producing results. After a couple years in this, look into starting your own thing. You may have to rent out space at first but doing this will make you much more money as the commercial gyms will rob you of most of the PT you sell. Marketing is key and that means keeping yourself in decent shape aesthetically between your physique and staying clean cut+ well dressed. Be as outgoing as possible and make your service be known. Make your educational achievements be known as well as your previous clients' progress.
