Proper form, proper diet, proper rest. Know the difference between what is normal soreness for you and when it is painful and demands reduced work or a resting period.
Focus of symetrical strength development, exercise stabilizong muscles like the glute medius, rotator cuff muscles, abductors, etc.
Warm up properly and stretch.

What about squats/deadlifts?
I do them now with pretty good (not perfect) form but a couple guys told me to not deadlift because that even with being form conscious it's easy to slip up.
Of course this is all bro talk but it has made me think.

Deadlifts are fine. Just use proper form, do not add too much weight and figure out what feels right for you.
If desdlifts consistently hurt and you are absolutely certain you are not just weak and you form is fine then maybe don't do them but the majority of people can and should do them.
Use reasonable weights for your strength level, watch a shit load of videos about proper form and always use intrabdominal pressure to stabilize your core.
Squats and deadlifts are great exercises. There is always some risk to exercises but these are not dangerous like many people say and they are great for preventing injury and keeping a healthy back, hips and knees when you do them right.
