So, is a 10 pound kettlebell too small? Just wondering if, no matter how many reps I do, I'm better off just getting a 20 pounder or heavier.

I'm no expert, but I'd say to start with whatever you can manage whilst it still not being too easy and light. When you start to jump ahead that's when injuries can happen.
