Just wondering how many of you guys ride. Yes that's one of mine on a 11 mile trip I took recently. I also have a vintage 70's french road bike(Stella is the brand) I'm slowly fixing up - adjusting cables, packing bearings, new pads and tires, ect.

I find it's WAY easier impact than running, and much more fun. Trying to work my way up to 15 miles a day.

Biking is very fun.
I'm gonna buy a new touring bike once some financial matters get settled in a few months.
I'm currently rolling this beach cruiser, but with a different seat and much higher seat position.
It has a 3-gear internal hub so some people get surprised when they see how fast I go.

Nice.

My fourth one, needed a hardtail in my selection

Not gonna sage because biking is great low impact cardio.

... Until a study comes out and says I can't do that either.

LOL I just was saying I didn't get that pic of the internet is all.

LOW IMPACT That was the phrase I was looking for but couldn't remember.

Dude, hit up Craigslist. Tons of stuff if you don't plan on doing any serious mountain stuff. For cruising around on pavement 50-100$, a little bit of negotiating skill, a can of brake cleaner to degrease/de-rust, some new chain lube and marine grease and a wrench will get you set up real nice.

>>42486371
Disk brakes. Jelly af. Some day I may.

Yeah I know, it's the canned /n/ response.
Thing is it's hard finding a bike for someone that's 6'2".
I've been wanting to work up to some serious touring stuff and I like the Surly LHT.
I don't really mind dropping a grand on a Surly but if I see something on CL then I'll reconsider.

Are decent road/cyclocross bikes cheaper in the EU compared to the US?

I might be moving to the EU for grad school and would definitely bike for my commute. Where I live in the US it's not nearly as convenient to bike as a form of commuting.
>>
>>42486856
I wouldn't use a cyclecross bike to commute because of the gearing, but that's just me.

Cannot say about price, sorry.
>>
>>42487073

I've always been a bit turned off by the durability of wheels for road bikes though. I've heard they can be damaged easily even on pavement.
>>
>>42487162
Hmmm...
I have heard the same thing, but I think good set of hand built wheels should really last, regardless of use. Super light stuff I would stay away from for daily driver suff anyways. I mean, a good set of alloy 32 or 38 spoke training wheels, properly trued/built/setup and inflated should give you very very VERY little room for breakage or malfuntion. Cheap stuff will break or need constant maintain anyways, especially the more vigorous your driving or how much weight you put on them.

I ride and fuck up my saracen mantra daily, mostly on the canal and local trails.
if you want to buy a mountain bike, try stay away from square tapered bb's and santour forks, they have given me nothing but trouble, but thats what i get for buying cheap i guess.
I don't see too much loss in strength as i just hit 110kg bench at 85kg bw but that might be because im bulking.
>>
>>42487509
any one youd recommend? what price range? (in the uk if that matters)
>>
>>42487619
Mine is the one pictured. It was about $400.

Some differences from owning cheaper department store mountain bikes: disk brakes, a little faster, lighter, more narrow tires, lot smoother gears.

It was my first more expensive bike. I don't like road bikes because they make me feel like falling over and I mostly go through some road and mostly gravel paths. It's a good all around bike for me.

Besides which if it's fitted properly to him then he should be reasonably comfortable for the length of his endurance.

The Craigslist stuff.

Typically three classes of bike, in my opinion - Road bikes, Mountain bikes, and cruisers. And then all the crossover stuff or specialist stuff like cycle cross, track racing, ect.

Road bikes have really thin tires, are lighter, and meant to go fast over paved roads. Mountain bikes are meant to go over roots and rocks and stuff. You can get pretty extreme. Cruisers are typically comfortable to ride, and have a very upright and relaxed riding position.

Google some stuff, look up YouTube vids about basic maintenance, and you could be good to go.

Check out some Olympic track riding stuff. Shit is insane. I'm built for it, but no way do I have time/money to invest. Those guys can accelerate to 50 mph on a damn bicycle.

The comment about fitted-ness is spot on.

I have three. The 70's Stella, a Schwinn, and that guy. The Schwinn is uncomforatable as fuck, so I keep it for parts. The road bike needs too much work(rear is dangerously out of round), and no way in hell would I ride a road bike out here....

The DS bike has been meticulously tweaked by me to be damn mear half-centimeter pefect, because the roads FRIKKEN SUCK out here - potholes, worn off asphalt from tractors, gravel/crushed roads full of depressions, and cornfields everywhere that I ride around in sometimes. So that bike was the obvious choice. It is a bitch up hill because the suspetion eats up a noticable amount of efficiency, but it's worth it to me.

Cycling is great. I started at the beginning of March. Started at about 20 miles a week and I am now up to 75 -100 miles a week. Only downside is how much time it takes to get a decent workout in now. Helps that I pedal in the rocky foothills so at least the scenery is interesting.

Your full suspension system sucks, if you look closely, they only work properly if you stay seated, Otherwise the impact will still go through your feet and legs unfortunatelly.

I really don't know why they still sell this things

thinking about either of these. it will be the first bike Ive owned since I was a kid and will mainly be for commuting. the hybrid is probably more practical, but the mtb is more aesthetic

I dont know a fucking thin about bike, these were recommended by a friend. any alternative suggestions are welcome :)
>>
>>42492135
For commuting, buy a road bike or a bike with road tires. I own a spare hardtail MTB that I use to go out with mates, and it's so slow compared to their road equipped bikes. I'm the guy with the green Yeti btw
>>
>>42492719
I forgot to mention I live in a semi rural area. I go through fields, gravel and shitty roads. wouldnt a hybrid atleast be better?
>>
>>42492776
Thin tires do not like SOFT earth, like mud and sand. You hit a patch of that with a thin tire and you will go flying. It will be hell if you have to commute after a heavy rain/during a rain.

After that it's just about how much abuse your frame and rims can take.

Personally I'd go with mountainish bike. The slower speed is worth the security of less-than-optimal road conditions for me.
