You're right, they are suffering from a form of mental illness, but maybe not in the way you think. The mere 'aesthetics' have little to do with it, that's just the outward excuse. The real reasons roiders, especially here on /fit/, use steroids, are several. They're small (or were made to feel small) and bullied. Humans don't like feeling powerless and out of control of their own lives, and being bullied can do that (if you're weak of character to start with and can't let it roll off your back like water off a duck's). Worse, if one of the two people in your life that you're supposed to be able to unconditionally trust (father and mother) are one of the ones who are bullying you? That's very emotionally damaging. So they want to 'take the power back' in their lives, and in desperation to correct things they turn to steroids, thinking that somehow mere physicality will correct their own inner weaknesses that facilitated the process of being bullied by someone. Little do they know that even the physically strongest can still get bullied by someone smaller and weaker because it's a mental game not a physical one; they could literally smash their bullies into hamburger but they'll still be in their heads. Someday they might realize their approach is all wrong and grow as individuals past the point where bullies and bad parents can get in their heads and mess with them, but as with all things it's a process and it takes time. They may never in fact. Meanwhile, as you observed, like a drug addict, they'll defend their 'addiction' tooth and nail, because it's all they have to cling to; without it they're nothing.
