I used to have expensive running shoes. I then switched to running on the forefoot with uncushioned rubber soles (adidas samba), the same way I run when I am barefoot. I like it a lot, and the shoes cost much less. I think it helped with an ingrown nail too. If I didn't live in a city I would probably just go without shoes, at least some of the time.

I've been getting pairs between $20 and $200 since I was a kid and there's virtually no difference after you've worn them in.
