If you want to do one of the "front office" roles (like IBD, sales/trading/M+A etc) literally start gearing yourself towards this as soon as you start university.

Join societies, sports teams, etc while at uni. In preparation for a grad job, apply for as many internships/work experience roles you can while at uni. Doesn't matter if it's a bulge bracket bank or a boutique, you need that experience in order to get a graduate level job.

If in the UK look into spring weeks at banks in London, if you get onto these, you have a better chance of getting asked back for a summer internship, and in turn, grad job.

>t. someone who tried but didn't quite get into a front office role at investment bank, but is now about to become an accountant instead

I'd say the roles I'm talking about are more on an institutional level, so you wouldn't really be dealing with the average man on the street, that would come under wealth management more than anything.

AFAIK, hedge funds at the moment aren't really in a great place, performance has been down for the last few years, but these things are cyclical.

Wouldn't worry about not being smart enough, there's plenty of retards working in finance

Why not both?
It's a great way to get into grad school with a base in neuroscience while studying something interesting, and even with a bachelor's, a lot of HR jobs and social work jobs (what I'm looking to go into- stuff like caring for elderly or disabled people) mainly hire Psych majors right out of school. Success in any field though is less about the degree itself and more about how you navigate your way into the workforce.
Having classes with a lot of girls is a nice perk.

Finance major going into junior year here lads, on track to become a professor, really looking forward to the academic life, and professors in the business school are in such high demand in America (and anywhere else really) that they get paid quite a lot, though that's not why I'm doing it. I come from a line of 8 generations of schoolteachers so it was always my passion. I spent hours and hours in high school volunteering in my moms elementary classroom but my father pressured me into following his path and becoming a banker. I'm not about 100 hour work weeks so imma just teach instead. any other finance bros finding the corriculum way too easy? I thought I was doing shit wrong but I've gone two years with a 4.0 and I'm set to graduate a semester early. Like I literally just read the textbook and the test answers are all directly taken from the book. Surely grad school is harder right? Meh

>>
>>42449910
Fuck no. I don't wanna teach. In my country what matters is that you have a master's degree and you know a lot of people. If those two criteria apply to you, you can get in to the corporate world. You do need specific degrees if you want a specific job like doctor, lawyer, engineer etc, but the average corporate job is open to everyone who has his master's (it's just a prerequisite to know if you have some brains in you)

BUT to answer your question: looking into a carreer in journalism or marketing

The only good teachers are the ones who did it after their real career. You need to live a life before giving life lessons. The idiots who started teaching right out of college are only fit as elementary teachers (aka babysitters).
>>
>>42448238

>>
>>42450131
I disagree mostly, many of my favorite teachers started right out of college. As far as professors go, in my experience at least, those who worked for years then moved to teaching aren't as skilled and don't seem as caring, though I understand what you mean with experience helping.
>>
>>42448083
>>42448109
About to finish up this semester.

>>42448698
At that point you might as well get a Computer Science degree too.
They're the same thing after a few classes.

>>42449454
Good luck, actually do shit outside of classes like working with API's and External Libraries. Get into some GitHub projects and shit. You've got 4 years ahead of you and you're going to be bored as hell if you don't. Also, you'll look cool in front of others because, somehow, doing the equivalent of a google search is amazing to people.

>>42449562
I would suggest, if you're doing a Computer Science route with this, on focusing your elective classes on Software Engineering. If the market fucks you over and you can't find a job, which it probably will, you still have the skills to be a functional programmer.

In my opinion questions that can help guide your decision on what specialty to go for include:
-do you want to do inpatient vs outpatient vs both
-do you want to do procedures or no procedures
-how are your board scores
-what interests you

People love to over exaggerate about how much studying they do or how they don't have time for lifting or anything besides studying and that's a bunch of bullshit. Especially in the first 2 years when its all lectures. In 3rd and 4th year it really depends on the rotation you're on. Some rotations are light 4-6 hour days, others are 12+ hour days

How hard is it to get into a state uni if I do my first 60 credits at community college? It's not a A.S. - T.

If it's hard, I'm just going to get into construction inspection and call it a day.

>>42447887

>>
>>42451511
Usually community colleges have agreements with the closest state uni that if you earn an associates (arts or science) you'll be given admission, even if you just skated by. As for other schools, if you have a 3.0 GPA or higher, it's a cake walk to get into any public uni

>>
>>42451690
Yeah - hence why I mentioned the A.S.-T. The major I would be going for (civil engineering) doesn't fall under that category of guaranteed transfers (actually, if you look at that program/agreement, it's LITERALLY only with social sciences) so hence why I'm asking if it's hard because they (community colleges) don't do A.A. degrees in STEMS, at least not in mine. So I'm not part of that program. I would basically be taking early classes for civil engineering at a C.C. and hoping to get accepted. Any idea how hard tranfers are without A.A.-T.s?

Starting /biz/ uni very soon and we specialize after first year, thinking of finance, accounting or economics. How social and outgoing do you have to be to prosper in finance? I'm no Chad but neither socially incompetent loser, and I value my free time very highly so selling my soul to corporate overlords doesn't sound good. Teaching at uni sounds good since long holidays and I'm good at talking to large groups of people.

Networking is what worries me the most right now, is it really that important?
>>
>>42451127
What was your resume like when you applied? Would you recommend a gap year? The pre-med advisor at my uni doesn't think I'll need one, and I'd prefer to go straight into med school anyways.
I'm the exercise science dude who works at the medical school. I'm currently a rising junior.
>>

Depends what you want to do.

For front office roles in finance, it's very important. It's even encouraged for you to name drop people you've spoken to in applications for jobs

They also have a class called American Constitutional Law and other things like that. So I'm guessing it's going to give me a basic understanding of law before going to law school. Kind of like a head start. Plus at my college in pre-law I have a lot of really good internship opportunities to count as credit. I'm hoping I'll meet the right people and that'll give me an edge in admissions.

More work for less pay than you would earn with comparable business or STEM degrees. This is doubly true if you end up in government like I did. My days start early, I spend most of my time either herding cats or grinding through monotonous tasks (eg quashing records requests), and I basically hate my life. Childless middle aged harpies will send complaints to my boss and my boss's boss whenever something doesn't go according to their made up expectations about how courts work. The agency is enemy number 1 and I've actually started hand writing rough transcripts of all my calls to anyone who works for the agency (I have never even considered doing this for anyone else before) and concealing as much information about my handling of cases from agency personnel as possible (except other attorneys). I will no longer go out of my way to help the agency because anything that is not standard practice means a bitchy email to the boss even if I saved them hours of work/wasted time. Once my sentence is up I'm jumping ship as fast as possible, preferably to a non-lawyer JD preferred job.

I think only like <3% of finance college grads work in a respectable bank, the rest go to corporate finance.

In my company most financial analysts do more general analyst roles, where you're in charge of reporting and metrics, but as you move up you shift more into revenue planning for the next X amount of years and P&L models.

The people though, always depends on the company and the culture. Average Americans though, nobody is that eccentric like doing cocaine in the bathrooms lmao
