The vast majority of bar/street fights will be broken up before 2 punches can be thrown. I assume in Yurup self defense legally doesn't exist, so you want to quickly diffuse the situation and exit. judo is great for street fights if done correctly. you can literally snap limbs while throwing if done right also if you land the person in an awkward position you can be assured ribs can be broken. I've had hairline fractures from being thrown to a mat, you can't laugh without it hurting and forget about standing up straight.

if you learn to counter stand up even by just by keeping your guard up and head down, you should be able to get close enough to render their punching attacks useless. I'm not a big statued guy (180cm) so I want to be close to a larger attacker. from my experience once you clinch, they're trying to find angles to punch which leaves them open to be flipped or tripped.

I'm with you about definitely learning some form of stand up, some form of takedown/shoot style and some form of ground game for sure, if you have the time and patience but if I had to learn just one style I probably would learn judo. I didn't realise how brutal it could be until I started training in it earlier this year. my background is predominantly Muay Thai and boxing (8 years on and off with injury and work commitments) with a tiny bit of BJJ/wrestling (4 years roughly).

before that it was just swinging haymakers and what we here colloquially refer to as "gin swings."

i stand by my earlier statement that the best form of self defense is situational awareness.

Grappling martial arts aren't that good for street fighting. For grappling size is very important, more so than for striking martial arts, especially if things go to the ground. Unless you are fedor, you arent gonna win against significantly bigger and stronger opponents through grappliing.
