It's sad to say, but this is actually pretty good for an animu. I've read some breddy interesting interviews with Japanese bodybuilders and the TL;DR version is that for a long time Nips have this thing against lifting weights because they think it makes you fat and slow and people who use weights are seen as shallow show-offs. They've been getting better about it lately, but historically they've been a nation of cardio bunnies.

Digital coloring/animating and classic coloring/animating have their own appeals and purposes. A large part of the switch to digital was to ease the workload on animators, so it's hard for me to fault them on that even if I might prefer the look of certain older shows. It's the same reason why CG is becoming so prevalent, for better (or mostly) worse.

To be fair, the exercise scenes aren't really representative of the show's strengths since KyoAni does what any reasonable studio does and directs the budget to the most important scenes.
