If we want to get into the psychology of the people who made this up and are using the term, know that we all compare eachother to everyone else. We think that we are, in part, like the other people, we always look for traits we have in common. Even if we do not want to have something in common. See, when "normal" people see an awkward person their thoughts go like this:

so in order to escape this association they make up some shit.
